General :: Kernal Panics Not Syrcing - Host Smbus Not Enabled

Mar 30, 2011

I tried to install Zenwalk, xunbutu, debian6 linuxmint, linuxpuppy and I've had nothing but Kernal panics not syrcing, host smbus not enabled, lupusave file problems, journal commit i/o error. I've been interested in linux for a long time and I was reading about it working well on old computers. Ive got a 366 celeron with a 4G drive and 160M memory (a real screamer). This computer has had win98 winME and win2K with flawless installations. I'm no expert at this stuff but I've been around since the DOS 3.3 days so I know a little bit. All I want to do is see my hard drive boot up in the linux operating system right now. What the heck is up with this file system?

Question: how to use user space i2c/SMBus when I cannot open + utilize devices on the smbus?

For example: smbus_fd = oepn("/dev/i2c-o", O_RDWR) cannot be done since '/dev/i2c-o' does not exists nor is it attached to the i2c-bus (see tree below).

Ubuntu :: Can't Name Workspaces With Compiz Enabled?

Apr 8, 2010

I had named all my workspaces earlier today, and it was great help in organizing my workflow. However, I went to turn on some compiz effects (to improve the visual ergonomics of my work environment), and now I notice workspaces are acting a bit strange.I can no longer drag a window onto one of the workspace boxes in the bottom right to move the window. Also, if I left click the workspaces pane and go into properties, I can now only change the rows and columns, not the workspace names. This is a bit strange, and I see no reason that enabling compiz should cause this kind of problem.I can right click a title bar and send the window to a different workspace that way, but because they're not named, it's hard for me to organize my desktop this way

Ubuntu :: Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled

Apr 30, 2010

I've just completed a successful clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bit).Out of the box, Desktop effects worked flawlessly. However, after installing the Ati driver from the Hardware Drivers utility, when I try to enable Normal desktop effects (Instead of None) I get a message saying "Desktop Effects Could Not Be Enabled". The Hardware Drivers utility says "Driver is installed and currently in use"

Installing and running glxgears from a terminal gives the error: "Segmentation Fault".The hardware in question is an Ati Radeon 4xxx series (I think it's a 4800 but can't remember exactly)

Ubuntu :: Enabled The Proprietary ATI Drivers?

May 2, 2010

I just built a new HTPC and decided to give Ubuntu a whirl again. I downloaded and installed 10.04, and set about configuring it. Everything looked great, except my audio over HDMI didn't work. I enabled the proprietary ATI drivers, and bam! the audio works! Great. Only one problem: there's a two inch border around my TV (not there with the open source drivers), and Boxee flashes colors rather than playing videos (a known bug. It's fixed by not using the ATI proprietary drivers). So, I disabled the drivers, rebooted, and the Boxee video works, the border/gap is gone, but once again the audio doesn't work. I've been through all the sound settings, and I have everything set to the HDMI output, but still nothing. I've tried various fixes I've found through googling

Ubuntu :: Possible To Automount Usb Disks With Acl Enabled?

May 4, 2011

Is it possible to automatically mount usb disks with access control lists enabled? I mean, WITHOUT adding a line to /etc/fstab for a specific disk;

I want to mount ALL ext4 disks automatically with the acl option (to preserve acls in backups. I don't want to set specific acls on my backup disks; just preserve existing acls).

I already tried enabling acl in /etc/fstab for / and modifying the acl for /media; it did not work (the modification was not even accepted).

Also, I cannot find anything in /etc/hal or /etc/udev that would be modifiable with my knowledge.

Ubuntu Installation :: Visual Effects Cannot Be Enabled?

May 2, 2010

I have recently updated to Ubuntu 10.04 (version of Gnome Desktop environment: 2.30.0, version of Linux kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic).My problem is that when I try to enable "Visual Effects", I receive an error message: "Desktop effects cannot be enabled". When I attempt to enable Visual Effects, my system starts searching for external device drivers but finds none. I don't believe that the source of the problem should lie in my graphics card (I have a DELL Inspiron 1545 notebook with an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD graphics with up to 1750 MB of dynamically shared memory allocated by the system). With the earlier version of Ubuntu, the 9.10, I didn't have this problem.

I had been asking how to enable Ctrl-Alt-Del to call the gnome Logout/Poweroff or whatever is the hidden name of the program to logout from the GUI in a Hardy system.

Today I discovered that once logged in the GUI, it stared enabled but, after three or four succesive calls (or a certain amount of time), it became disabled.

I don't know whether the ouput of dmesg and syslog give a clue. There's a strange interrupt.

Ubuntu :: CPU Frequency Scaling Always Enabled - How To Disable

I would like to be able to boot with my CPU at full power.I would prefer to disable whatever is scaling down my CPUs to having to inject cpufreq-set to change governor. Anyone has any hint?I use default Ubuntu but I boot into a KDE4 desktop. But the same issue happens booting into the Gnome desktop.

Ubuntu :: Autostart A Script AFTER NICs Are Enabled?

Jan 10, 2011

I have a script that I need to run on boot which requires my network interfaces to be already setup when it runs. On an old P4 test machine (all machines in question are running server 10.10) I have to add "sleep 1" in front of my script to get this to work. My application is boot-speed sensitive but I'm alright with this.

What I'm not alright with, and don't understand, is when I move the script to my Atom D510 platform I have to bump up to "sleep 9" to get it to work reliably but even as low as "sleep 5" works on occasion. I have been using both /etc/init.d and an @reboot command inside /etc/crontab with similar results.I don't understand why I have to sleep so much longer on the Atom (everything else aside they both boot in about the same amount of time) and I don't understand why the duration I have to sleep on the Atom is not stable. Is there any way I can get a more fine grained control of when my script executes (ie as soon as possible after the network interfaces are started)?

3. I am still unable to get the "Wireless Networks" to even be selectable under the Network Manager
4. When I return to BIOS, the computer shuts down immediately.
5. The start-up menu won't allow me access.
