Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Loader / When Power Up Its Saying GRUB Loader Failed?

Nov 16, 2010

I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

Fedora :: Replace Boot Floppy With USB Stick?

Apr 13, 2011

I going to re-install Fedora 14 and several other OS-es on a multi boot system.

Now - my normal procedure is to install fedora 14 last and use the grub boot loader to load the other OS. As I use a hard disk to regularly install an experimental OS I keep my grub boot on a back-up floppy. The installation is done (as root) in this way:

modprobe floppy
fdformat /dev/fd0
mke2fs /dev/fd0
mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/floppy '(fd0)'
cp /boot/grub/grub.conf /mnt/floppy/boot/grub/grub.conf
umount /mnt/floppy

This works great. If your mbr is overwritten by another OS you can use the boot floppy to get into Fedora - no problem.

However - my new system has no longer a floppy disk drive (no connection the motherboard). I wonder if can use a USB stick in stead of a floppy to boot Fedora if my mbr is overwritten. I only have no clue how to do that. The above procedure can obviously not be used, because a stick is no floppy.

I am NOT asking for a full Fedora on the stick!!! I only want t use the stick to boot my hard drive based Fedora if the mbr is overwritten.

OpenSUSE Install :: Live USB Stick Does Not Record Changes

I created the second partition with the script listed the instructions. Is there any anything else to do to make the live system mount the second partition?

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Grub To Floppy

Jan 5, 2010

Unfortunately I have to use Win NT 4.0 everyday and in fact I am trying to create a system where I have many versions of NT on one disk. My plan is to store them in Linux and create a shell script to over write the first primarly partition which is ntfs. I am trying to install Xubuntu Koala on a logical partition and NT at the start of the disk. Grub is not loading NT well. I want to just use the NT booter and launch Linux from a floppy.

During the install there is an option to write grub to /dev/fd0 but it won't work for me. I tried both fat and ext2 formatted disks and I made sure they were present during the initial boot for auto mounting. I have verified that the floppy drive actually works.

How to install grub to my floppy.

Fedora :: F12 & Internal Floppy Drive - Floppy Formatting No Longer Works?

Dec 13, 2009

Is there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)

I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something. With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.

*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.

Ubuntu :: Use Grub Instead Of Win 7 Boot Loader ?

Aug 26, 2010

Every dual boot guide and every dual boot I've set up I've done the same way. Always install Windows first then install Ubuntu. Well, this time Windows didn't let go of the bootloader it seems like. I have kind of an awkward setup for hard drives...32gb SSD /2X250gb raid1 /home 3gb(at beginning of 1tb HDD) swap

The rest of the TB is Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed Windows 7 without problems the installed Ubuntu 10.04 x64 without problems. It asked if I wanted grub to overwrite mbr I said yes. Computer rebooted... Straight into Windows. I downloaded EasyBCD and added grub to Windows boot menu. The option works great, goes straight into grub. Grub even has Windows listed.

Why is my computer using Windows boot manager and how do I switch it to grub?

General :: GRUB-2 Bootloader Fails To Load For Lack Of Floppy Drive?

Jul 21, 2010

2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.

I've gone through the Grub-2 page at [URL].. to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub.

The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point.

At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. In any case, here's the /boot/grub/grub.cfg contents:

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub
#
### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ###

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Loader Does Not Work

Sep 30, 2010

I have always been a Redhat user, and ESXi User. I decided to try ubuntu because of it's strong recommendations as a file server. I have tried several fixes listed in the forums with no luck. I tried the live CD and I have no issues there. I tried gparted, and it sees all my drives. Seeing that most ask for the boot info script to be run, i was proactive. I know its a boot issue with were grub is pointing too. However, that is where I get stuck. I am not an expert at using grub. In a Nut shell, I had no issues installing. I choose the Jmicron 150G Raid 1 drive. Used full drive space with LVM. When it came to reboot I did, and it just sits after it does the boot from cdrom. I hate to go back to windows 7 for a file server/web server. Oh Windows was installed at one point, I think that is where the script sees the GPT partitions.

If I can do this, I'll use EasyBCD to add Ubuntu into the MBR so it can go to the GRUB loader to go into Ubuntu. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense, I'm new to Ubuntu.
