Ubuntu :: Re Purposing 8-year Old PC?

Feb 7, 2011

Re purposing 8-year old PC, recommendations on what desktop environment. Bit of a newbie to the scene, but I've been tinkering for a while with Ubuntu/linux.

The machine is an AMD AthlonXP 2700+ with 1.5GB of memory and an nvidia 6600GT. I have Ubuntu 10.04 on it right now with the standard gnome environment that came with it, but it is slow and terribly laggy. I was looking at XFCE and LXDE. I know either would work, was looking for pros/cons, ect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Set Up 4 Year Old Laptop's Wireless To Run

Feb 14, 2010

searching broadcom ubuntu in google results in a thread that is five years old. has there been any changes? i still cannot set up my 4 year old laptop's wireless to run and i have just about given up. why should i spend my valuable time getting something that is suppose to work when i could just run windows 7 and be done with it. now this is coming from a 4 year old laptop, has anything changed? i want to hear yes but i know that wireless support in linux is absolutely atrocious and sickening, even more than 4 years ago since wireless is now the norm and linux refuses to give proper attention to wireless drivers.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - Any Way To Sort Rhythmbox By Album (Year Wise)

Feb 3, 2011

I just migrated to Ubuntu 10.04 from windows and I could not be more satisfied, except for one minor, nitpicky detail. In iTunes I was able to sort my music by "album by year". That is, my music was sorted primarily by artist, then by album year. So each artist had their albums listed in chronological order. My library is meticulously tagged, so every track on every album is tagged with the same YEAR value. Is this possible in Rhythmbox? Is there a plugin or will i have to edit a .conf file (or similar) somewhere? I'm new to Ubuntu, but not afraid of getting my hands a bit dirty, so to speak.

Software :: Normal To Wipe - Each Year And Start Over?

Sep 21, 2010

I am running ubuntu on several computers. One in particular runs mythbuntu and is a mythtv server and frontend.

I do the ubuntu upgrade every 6 months so that I can gain the new features and enhancements included in mythtv.

My issue is that with each upgrade seems to come more issues. For instance, this time I upgraded to the latest and greatest and now mythtv crashes every day or two. Also, since vdpau was added to the new nvidia drivers, i am unable to get it to work.

So my question is: Is it normal for you guys to do a complete reinstall when you want to go to a new version of your linux flavor of choice.

It seems that the new ubuntu (really mythbuntu) is very stable and never crashes, but it just seems to me that once you start running a few programs, they just don't upgrade well.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Install F12 On A 3 Year Old Dell Demension 1100

I am trying to install Fedora 12 on a 3 year old Dell Demension 1100. It only has a CD reader so I bought a 5 CD set and proceeded to install. Everything works fine until the end of the initial part of the installation where it asks to reboot the computer, the program says it has installed correctly. On rebooting the command line appears and asks for localhost log in. Problem is during the installation the program didn't ask for a user name only a root password. I am unable to access this and there are still another 4 CD's to go.

General :: Find And List Files Created In A Particular Year?

Jan 31, 2011

How to find and list files and directories present the current directory which were created in, say, years 2005, 2006, and 2009 and then move them to some other location, for example, /backup. Yes, I need to list them and move simultaneously. We can use:

Code:

find . -mtime n {};

but that n is troublesome for me to figure out files/directories created in years 2005, 2006, and 2009, for instance. Is there any way to match exactly by Year Value rather than calulating the "n" (days * 24 Hours)?

General :: Show Previous Year When Performing Dec Backups In Jan

Jan 25, 2010

I have a script that moves files from one directory to another, based on the numeric date of the file name (i.e., 20091212 would go to the December directory). Now, since this script will be ran at the beginning of the following month (December's files to be tarred and gzipped will be performed the first day of January, and January's in February, etc.), it appears to me that the script will be tricky when it comes time to do the December files in January.

Here's part of the script:
Code:
# Define working directory and target directory.
DIR=/var/log
target=$DIR/month
hostname='uname -n' .....

I can't seem to figure out a way to carry the output of the date command to the next command, and the year for the December files will always be wrong.

Programming :: MySQL Year Field Range Too Limited

Jul 1, 2011

In the MySQL database for one of my programming projects, I used a "YEAR(4)", because I wanted the column to contain four-digit year values. I discovered, though, that this type only allows values from 1901 to 2155, which is not workable as some year values are previous to the twentieth century. But I do not want a "DATE" type because the month and day are of no interest to me. What type should I convert to that would be the least radical change in data type, while giving more range?

General :: A Script That Will Display Only The Last Login Of Each User With The Date And Year?

Apr 20, 2010

This is on an old machine that is running Solaris 7. I know that I can run the command script 'last' to get a list of who has logged in. When I do that I get a very long list of lines like:

username pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)

I see that the year is not posted. I have about 11 years worth of logins where users have logged in multiple times over several years.

So, here is what I need: I only need the date of the very last time a person logged in. I also need the year of that last login.

script that will do this? Something with output like

username1 pts/4 100.32.11.123 Wed Dec 6 2005 18:30 - 18:40 (00:09)
username2 pts/4 110.33.11.18 Tue Apr 20 2009 8:30 - 9:30 (01:00)

CentOS 5 :: How Does 5.2 Differ On 8 Year Old Toshiba Laptop From 2009 Xeon Server

Mar 20, 2009

My work reponsibilities now include a new server running Centos 5.2 on a Dual Xeon Dell server machine with Raid 1 on 2 160Gb disks, but I have no experience of Linux, let alone Centos.I figured I'd download an image and load it on a spare machine just so I could get used to the OS and try things out without risking my live server. My only available spare at present is a Toshiba laptop from 2000 (it was top of the range at the time, but probably looks bad compared to my pocket smartphone now).My questions are:

a) Is it feasible to load Centos on this old donkey of a laptop? Would I struggle to find the right drivers, etc., or is it all contained in the distribution?

b) Assuming it runs, would the differences between the two implementations significantly affect my learning experience?

c) Assuming the two are similar enough to make the laptop a useful reference/staging/learning tool, where do I start? I've already downloaded an ISO image for LiveCD (i386) and burned it to a CD but the CD doesn't seem to have anything I recognise. Windows (both Vista and XP) treats it like any data CD and shows no autorun behaviour with it.
