Ubuntu One :: Rhythmbox Doesn't See Purchases From Store
Jan 30, 2011
How to I get Rhythmbox see music I bought from the Ubuntu One store? I am using Maverick on an amd64. Read on for the context of this question.
I am not sure if this forum is the right place to complain about bugs and misfeatures, but the Ubuntu One Music store is an almost-working service that looks completely broken. I'll explain my own problem, but it is related to this thread [url] and this thread [url].
1) If I use Rhythmbox to pay money for a song, the payment happens but the download appears to fail (0% downloaded for *hours*).
2) I accidentally find that the songs actually have appeared in my Ubuntu One storage under "Purchased Music". No clue how to get them into my local FS or to Rhythmbox, except by manually downloading each file.
3) I find out that they actually are on my local system but hidden! (In ".ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One").
4) This directory is so obscure that even Rhythmbox can't find it. If I restart the player, there is no sign of the songs in my Library, and if I got to "My Downloads" in the UbuntuOne store, it just says "Transferring to your Ubuntu One storage".
5) I can't even navigate manually within Rhythmbox to the hidden directory. I have to actually symlink it to some non-hidden name and then navigate.
Now I love a good symlink, but this is hardly a slick user experience. I think every step 1-5 represents a distinct bug or misfeature.

Title says it all. Following the instructions at the site [URL] "Start using the Ubuntu One Music Store by going to Applications Sound & Video Rhythmbox Music Player." yields nothing.

Whenever I plug my Zune in, Rhythmbox recognizes all the songs on it but when I doubleclick on a song to play it, the song doesn't play and Rhythmbox quits. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I'm running a Dell XPS 410 with 4GB RAM and a 1.75 GHz processor. Also, I imported a CD and it plays fine.

klipper doesn't always store the latest clipboard contents in its history in kde 4.3.5. I have "ignore selection" and "separate clipboard and selection" set in Klippers settings. When i open a new program, for example - kwrite, type some text in it, select some of it and hit ctrl+c - copied text doesn't show up in klippers history list. It seems that klipper misses the first copy operation done in newly launched applications, only by copying the same (or some other) text again klippers menu entry shows up. This seems to happen with only newly launched application, when i had kwrite window already open, opening a second window and performing copy worked fine with klipper.

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?
Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

No media player recognizes my Philips MP3 Player as such, I've put all my hopes into Rhythmbox, it seems to be the most likely one to work. Anyway, I have created the empty .is_audio_player file but still the player does not show up in RB. I can access the player just fine through Nautilus, and syncing it actually worked for a while, but now for some reason it has stopped.

I have an RCA Opal, 4GB player. I am having some problems transferring music to it. I first try the player in MSC mode and just drag and drop the files I want to listen to into the Opal's Music directory. That works fine, but over half of the songs I transfer over end up in the "Unknown Album" file. I have checked the ID3 Tags for these songs and they are intact. Next I have put the player into MTP mode to try to transfer things with Rhythmbox, but Rhythmbox doesn't show the player in the sidepanel.
EDIT 1: It may be worth noting that mtp-detect in Terminal returns the message "No Raw Devices Found"
I am on Pidgin right now if anyone just wants to IM a response.

I have an iPhone 3GS with Firmware 3.1.3 and I'd like to sync the music over rhythmbox in lucid (64bit).
The phone does mount in nautilus and I can also mount it with ifuse to use it witz gtkpod. However it does not show up (it only blinks and disappears) in the list at the left in rhythmbox though I have MTP and iPod Plugins enabled.
I thought I'd ask after having waited several weeks and none of the gvfsd updates changed anything

I made the upgrade to 10.10 the other day, and it's pretty functional. The few problem that keep erking me are as follows: 1. Often when I boot up the gnome-panel is buggy, I run Code:
gnome-panel --replace to fix this, which it does. I'd just like it to look normal at boot up.
2. The GDM (or compiz) doesn't boot up correct all of the time. Every now and then I'll open a program after booting and will have no minimize/restore/exit buttons. I fix this buy just turning compiz on using the compiz-switch icon which I put up in my panel. 3. Why doesn't rhythmbox minimize to the notification area. I like the mini player in sound menu, but I hate that if you want it out of your system tray it has to be closed.

So I've been using Rhythmbox and Gnome Do for quite some time now, and this problem has persisted for about as long
So I've got the Rhythmbox plugin enabled in Gnome Do. Awesome. I can invoke Gnome Do (Super + Space on my system) and start typing up some music I want to hear. This morning I wanted to listen to Buck 65's album Vertex. So I start typing "Buck 65" and the artist is listed in Gnome Do as expected.
I hit the right arrow to see a listing of his albums. I arrow down to Vertex and press Enter. What I expect is that Rhythmbox will start playing that album. However, there is simply no effect. This occurs at all levels of music browsing with Gnome Do. I can select an artist, album, or specific song, and no matter what I select, Rhythmbox doesn't respond at all. This is true if Rhythmbox is already running or not, whether it's already playing music or not. There's just no effect.
In short, Gnome Do correctly sees Rhythmbox's index of my music, and I can traverse the artists, etc with it just fine, but it will not actually make Rhythmbox play that music.
That said, other functions of the Rhythmbox plugin work fine. I can pause and play music just fine using Gnome Do.

Whenever I click minimize in rhythm box, it just goes to its own box in the bottom bar like most programs. But when i click the X while music is playing, it keeps playing, but it just disappears. The sound button has no options other than volume, and the only way to bring rhythmbox back up is starting it back up. Why doesn't it minimize to the sound button like its supposed to?

After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...
Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.
I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]
Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

I have a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have about 50GB of music in the Music library. I can connect from, play to, and download music to my DLNA enabled phone (Samsung Galaxy S), everything works fine.
When I start Rhythmbox on my laptop (Ubuntu 10.10), it sees my PC (appears under "Shared" in the left panel), but the tracks won't show on the list, it seems as if it fails to retreive the list of media. No matter how long I wait, nothing happens, the tracklist remains empty forever.
I have installed the "coherence" plugin from the Software Center.
I'll attach the console output rhythmbox generates when starting up,
Sidenote: it works the other way around, I can "Play to..." Rhythmbox from Windows Media Player.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10, and am trying to use Rhythmbox. I have 180gb of music on an external hard drive, and have that music folder set in my library location settings. When I open Rhythmbox, my drive shows up, and it starts importing. It doesn't show up in the "Music" section, and when I close Rhythmbox, then re-open it, it rescans that drive all over again. what I'm doing wrong and why it won't save my library,

we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.
Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):
Code:
sasha@reactor: rhythmbox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
(rhythmbox:15745): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: IA__gdk_pixbuf_get_width: assertion `GDK_IS_PIXBUF (pixbuf)' failed
(rhythmbox:15745): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
[code].....
Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff. If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

I use one PC only, I paste some files and folders into the U1 folder. Files upload to the webstore, I can see them via the web. Now, *what* is subsequently used as a *reference* for content? For example, what should happen if I rename a folder in the PC U1 folder? Should the new name later appear appropriately on the webstore? What should happen if I use the web access, and delete a folder in the webstore? The PC U1 folder remains full, does the web store get filled and corrected? At a time when the webstore is complete and correct, if the contents of the PC U1 folder is deleted by me, will the webstore contents act as a form of backup? Or will the webstore contents also get removed by U1 process?

What will it be? I will use Clonezilla as the backup software, but I want to be able to see the backups from both Linux and windows.
Is fat32 an option? I have very large files(game isos and stuff like that)
If fat32 isn't an option, what filesystem should I use?
I read this thread but it doesnt mention the software to use and I assume we wants only to be able to see it in Linux.

If you want to try the music store out without risking of any of your hard earned, 7digital have a selection of free downloads here. Check them out on web site, then go find in Rythmbox and check out as normal. This is using from UK, I assume they also do the same in other territories.

After a prolonged absence, version 4.10, I have started dabbling with Ubuntu again. It was a HDD crashing that sent me down this path. Needless to say, the ability to backup my user data to a second HDD is an important task to me. I'm currently using Back in Time to accomplish this and all is well. However, there is one thing missing. I can't locate my Tomboy Notes data within the file system. I expected to see a "hidden" folder in my /home, but do not. Where this information is stored so I can back it up as well?

I just downloaded my first track and I was pleased!
It was easy to find, pay, and download. It was 20 cents cheaper than AmazonMP3 too.
I had the same song downloaded from AmazonMP3 and compared them side-by-side.
The 7digital file had a better bitrate (320KB/sec) than AmazonMP3 (225KB/sec) and I didn't notice any quality in the sound.
I noticed, however, the AmazonMP3 track was stereo and the 7digital one was mono.
Mono?
What?
Are all the songs like this?
