Ubuntu :: On Screen Keyboard ?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm looking for a fairly stylish on screen keyboard similar to this one. I'd prefer it if it had some sort of pop-out button like in Windows 7 when entering a text field. It must be suitable for a 1024x600 screen.

Ubuntu :: Can't Use On-screen Keyboard Forever

Jul 24, 2010

Recently my keyboard began malfunctioning.I know that this is a hardware problem, as the keyboard was tested on two different computers.I was wondering if anyone here knows what to do.I know this is a forum for Ubuntu troubles, but I don't know where else to ask. This is really troublesome because the computer the keyboard is hooked up to only has ports for a usb keyboard.Unfortunately the only other usb keyboard in the house is in use by another person.I can't use an on-screen keyboard forever.

How do I change the default size of the on-screen keyboard on ubuntu netbook remix.I have a Dell Inspiron Duo, it functions as a Tablet Hybrid in which its screen can flip out to look and act as a function as a Tablet. However when I bring up the on-screen keyboard to use for typing on tablet mode, it is often too small for finger input (computer does not use a stylus) Resizing will be too difficult. So I need to know how to increase the default size of the on-screen keyboard when it comes up.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard And Mouse Will Not Work Once Get To The Login Screen

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Logitech Wave keyboard and mouse for my computer. I am not sure which version of Ubuntu I am running on but I think it is 6.10. When I boot up my computer I can go into the BIOS and earlier today it would even let me press escape to seee which operating systems I could boot. Now it no longer lets me see the operating system I have (which is why I cant say which version of Ubuntu I have). It takes me to the log in page and asks for the username and password but I cant type and I cant move the mouse. Earlier I could also use Alt+F1-F12, but this is no longer working either so it just sits at the login page and nothing works at all. The computer that is having this problem is very old it is a Proteva and when I opened up the actual computer the processor says:

At startup the computer says that the processor is a: AMD K-6

I know that the BIO's are to old for Ubuntu to run properly because at startup it also says that: "ACPI :
BIOS age (1998 ) fails cutoff (2000), acpi=force is required to enable ACPI" it also says that: "ACPI : unable to load the System Description Tables."

I have'nt used this computer for about a year or two, but the last time I used it it worked perfectly fine. I have been seeing questions on the forums similar to mine, but their problems are on other versions of Ubuntu and their mouse's are said to work fine. I cant try any of the solutions for the problems I have read about because I cant open the prompt that you get when you are at the log in screen and press F2. I have no idea what to do.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mouse And Keyboard Working But Screen Does Not Refresh

First I tried VNC. Easy install through Ubuntu GUI, but I could only see a still picture of the Ubuntu-desktop that wouldn't update. I could see on the Ubuntu monitor that the cursor was moving and the keyboard did work, but on my Windows computer, the screen didn't refresh. Then I read a bit on the forums and people seemed content with nomachine NX or freenx. After a bit of hazzle I finally managed to get a connection between my Windows and Ubuntu-machine. But the same thing happened here. I get to see a still picture of the Ubuntu desktop, mouse and keyboard working, but the screen doesn't refresh..!

Ubuntu :: Random Mouse/keyboard Freeze In The Login Screen?

May 1, 2010

I downloaded and burnt the Kubuntu 10.04 release to a CD. I tried to install it. First time, couldn't find the disks and eventually it froze. Ok, second try, when it's contacting the "time server" (or whatever) another freeze, but this time I notice everything is running fine and then get a nice little image with the current time (increasing seconds and all). Third attemp, clicked the "update this installer" and it went fine. "Yay!" I thought. Well, a few minutes in my beautiful 10.04 system and again, another freeze. Hit the power button and to my surprise a "Shutdown" dialog shows up with a countdown. After 30 seconds it logs out and mouse is working again. I log back in and come here to write this long post, and as I was writing the title "Random mouse/ke..." guess what? Yeah, it froze again. And the little bar that goes after the writing continued happily blinking. Hit the power button but this time mouse and keyboard were still frozen in the login screen.

Short version: mouse and keyboard randomly freeze while the rest of the system apparently work fine.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Any Keyboard/mouse Input To Register On Screen?

Dec 19, 2010

I installed Ubuntu a couple of months ago using the Wubi installer.Today, I went to restart my PC, but soon after hitting 'Restart' the computer became unresponsive. I couldn't get any keyboard/mouse input to register on screen, so I did a force shut down by holding down the power button. When I turned the computer back on, I selected Ubuntu from the boot menu. The computer printed some messages that passed by relatively quickly so I'm not sure exactly what they said, but it was something along the lines of "NTFS3: wubibuilder failed to load", and then it went straight back to the boot menu. Tried again and again with no success, so I loaded my Windows 7 install to investigate from there. I found a link to Explore2fs on these forums, so I loaded it up, but it apparently can't locate my Ubuntu partition, or at least I don't see my files. I ran the Wubi installer again to see what it would say, and it tells me that a previous installation was detected, and gives me the option to uninstall. Does anyone have an idea of what went wrong,

As the title says i have this error on both my main computer and my laptop. For my main computer see this post, that is when it happened. viewtopic.php?f=30&t=65743

I run the updates on my laptop a while ago and decided to restart it to check if everything went okay. It seems not.

The only way i can get on the desktop, is to choose the recovery mode, su to user and startx.

This is a common error during booting on both computers. Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevderror binding control socket, seems udevd is already running

It seems a little strange, same error on both computers.

Ubuntu :: Commands - Sudo Kill -9 -1 - Screen Became Blank - Keyboard Not Responding

Jul 11, 2011

I am learning linux commands. I just wanted to see what happens when I type

Code:

The screen became blank. Keyboard was not responding. I couldn't do a proper shutdown. I switched off computer by pulling out the plug. When I restarted, I heard a series of beeps (approximately 10 beeps). Then I was dropped to the grub prompt. The problem now is I can not type anything into the grub prompt, because the character 'c' is continously printed across the screen like this:

Code:

I couldn't stop the character 'c' from printing (I tried pressing Esc, Ctrl+C)

The solution is easy. I can reinstall grub from a livecd. Or even reinstalling the entire operating system wouldn't take more than 30 minutes. But I want to know:

1) What exactly happened to grub? What stage does this error belong to (1, 1.5 or 2)? What is the error number?

2) How can running "sudo kill -9 -1" affect grub?

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard And Mouse Or Maybe Screen - Freezes

Mar 29, 2010

So it's a beautiful day and I'll be happily using my computer when I realise that the screen is no longer showing that I'm typing or moving my mouse (or finger across a touch-pad). I can leave my computer in this frozen/crashed state for hours. My only recourse is to drain the battery or hold down the power button until the computer shuts down. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop/notebook. As my memory serves, it has an ATI graphics thingy. Radeon 1400, maybe. But I've had the computer for years and this behaviour has emerged only the past couple of months, with seemingly increasing frequency.

The OS is
# uname -a
Linux polaris 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 22:40:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(aka Squeeze?)

Sometimes this happens within minutes of turning the computer on and logging into Gnome. Sometimes this happens only hours after I've started using the computer (mainly just surfing the web). Sometimes it is preceded by a loud boop sound and the following if I have console open, sometimes not. So maybe that's unrelated. But that happened just now so I thought I'd throw it in.

One weird thing: Usually this happens within an hour of starting to use the computer, but one occasion I noticed I had not had the problem for several hours. On that occasion, the only thing I noticed I was doing that was also unusual: I had turned on and forgotten about a kvm virtual machine. After I shut down the vm, I had about only a minute before the freeze. I'm surprised now that it hasn't frozen since I started typing thing. Maybe I should always keep this forum open in a browser window.

OpenSUSE :: Screen & Keyboard Freezes Often - SuseLinux 11.3 - KDE4

Mar 25, 2011

i installed suselinux 11.3 on my lenovo t410 and i am using kde4. since then, i have the following problem: the screen freezes suddenly and the keyboard doesn't work anymore. i can move the mouse cursor, but clicking doesn't work. funny enough, the sound still works. the only way to restart the laptop is by pushing the power button for 10 seconds.

so far, there was no real pattern about the 'when does that happen?'. it happens sometimes when i am surfing on 'innocent' webpages like wikipedia or spiegel.de, not very often while watching videos. once it happened when i was only using kile for latex. it happened while i was experimenting with kdenlive. another time when i opened 2 vcl player in order to watch 2 videos simultanously.

sometimes there are days without trouble, sometimes i have to restart the laptop 5 times (like today...). is there a way to find out what is actually wrong? and how to get rid of the problem? (how do i create a proper bug report of these incidents?)

General :: Get Back The Control Of The Screen/keyboard On System?

Aug 24, 2011

I have a Linux system running (Debian). It is working perfectly from a remote point of view. I can ssh in it, it has the imap running correctly, and a couple of kvm systems running (I can also ssh to them). Well, it works!

But when I go in front of the keyboard/mouse/screen there's nothing. No way to switch between the consoles with Ctrl+Alt+F# (X is not running on this system). The screen is desperately black. But the screen does not go to sleep mode, it still has its green led on! I guess it means that the graphics card still sends the H and V syncs correctly (VGA connection).

Is there a process that is blocking the display and prevents me from getting the control?

Note: Last time I used the console, it was in console 1. Ctrl+Alt+F1.
