I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.

I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)

After finally getting my 3d graphics configured (thanks to leigh123linux!) I now am trying to tackle my sound issue. The end result is that I want to play equake (from loki installers). The game seems to run fine, except that I get no sound.
Now I know that OSS sound is going the way of the dinosaur in favor of Alsa, but I know people with older distributions have got OSS emulation working. I have all the alsa-oss packages installed that are available in my repos, but I still cannot get any sound in equake.
Also, I have tried the wrapper program, padsp, with no success.
Code:
[tja@area51m ~]$ padsp equake
/dev/dsp: No such file or directory
Now I know why there is no /dev/dsp device file anymore, but my question is simply, what do I have to do to get OSS emulation working? As I mentioned, I have the alsa-oss packages installed.

lenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?

Im running debian lenny amd_64, but I have another machine here that also runs the 32 bit os, also have a friend who is trying to get this to work to o on ubuntu amd_64. Long story short wed like to play some quake 2, I tried to run it under wine with no success, and why run it with emulation(or the likes) when it was ported to linux. Anyway with some painstaking effort I have got it to run if I run it with the software X11 rendering it runs but the graphics are squished, and only take up the left half of the screen but the MOUSE DOES WORK just fine.
I am able to run it now in the other rendering glx, soft, but when I run it everything works graphics look great, but the MOUSE DOES NOT WORK at all. Ive seen some things saying that gpm maybe locking it and I need to shut it down, that being said I cant find out how to shut it down for debian or ubuntu or evidence that its even running in the processes of my system, I've tried killing the gnome manager but I still have the same problem.
I've also tried the icculus port, and the installers, but both seem to FUBAR quake 2, and were a pain in the ass to even compile. I've been able to get the id version running just fine with other than this hiccup.
Ive also heard I may need to chmod the mouse device file if so where is it?
How do I stop GPM on a debian/ubuntu system? If you know this is not the problem, what do I need to do to get the mouse to work?
Wheres the mouse device file so I can Chmod it? If all else fails how do I get the gfx to not screw up when using softx?

I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

I just installed ubuntu studio and it looks better than ever. I have an ice1712 soundcard and I have NEVER had it work on ANY linux distribution that used pulseaudio (I'm guessing that this problem has been around for at least two years) so I proceeded with my usual way of fixing things which is to just get rid of pulseaudio. Well it worked like a charm, uninstall pulseaudio, reboot and there's my sound. Here is my problem, I went to >system >preferences >sound to turn of the system sounds. I get a message, "waiting for sound system to respond" Does anyone know how I can make these sounds go away. I'm happy to try anything.

So I don't use gnome, KDE, or XFCE, but I'm running Xubuntu. I'm constantly playing music via nvlc. While that music's still playing, I'd like to be able to hear a sound I run from the command line via
Code:
cvlc beep.mp3
I've tried on and off over the years messing with pulse, esd, etc. output options for vlc, but never figured out exactly how to do this. In Windows, having a batchfile play a .wav at the same time as an mp3 player is playing music "just works" I know there must be a "just works" solution for Linux.

I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.
Card is HDA ATI SB

I know Xubuntu is a "quiet" OS, but I don't even get a login sound and I have checked the box in Login Screen settings. I'm using 10.04 final. Are there no system sounds in this version? There doesn't seem to be a way to specify your own chosen sound by pointing to a directory.

On startup I heard a 'click' around the time "loading hardware modules" and "loading kernel drivers" was showing on the monitor. Then all the system sounds became fuzzy (corrupted?). Other sounds, such as VLC playing a music station, are fine.

Ever since 9.04 or thereabouts, I have noticed that it's impossible to change individual system event sounds in System -> Preferences -> Sounds. It only gives me a few lame choices of "themes". While it used to be possible to define my own sounds for startup, shutdown, new e-mail, etc, I can't find ANY dialog to facilitate this in newer versions of Ubuntu.
A question: HOW do I do this without having to hack apart my stock system sounds? There should be a way, but google and forum searching turns up nothing.
A comment: Ubuntu continuing to "nerf" their dialogs like this is infuriating, especially when the underlying system works so well. I actually don't know if Ubuntu or Gnome is responsible, but either way taking away rock-bottom basic functionality like this only hurts the OS and Linux's cause.

When ever I play any sound, It 'pops' at the beginning. These pops could be split seconds of no sound, actual popping sounds, or clicking. I'm thinking its Pulse Audio.

I'm having an issue where I can't hear any sounds in Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). In the Sounds Preferences, under Hardware it correctly lists "SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio". The sound is not muted, and I've tried cycling through various Profile options in the hardware tab. Since it is correctly detected, I'm thinking that there might be something simple that I'm missing here. The motherboard is an MSI P6N Diamond: [URL]

I have had no issues with Ubuntu 10.10, but after installing ubuntu 11.04 my sounds stopped working.
My computer is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 3.20 GHz with a ASUS P7P55D Motherboard (integrated sound-card in the motherboard) 4 Gigs of RAM and a NVIDIA GTS 250 (1G RAM) Videocard
Never had any issues with it, but this version of Ubuntu my sounds have stopped working. Any ideas on how to fix this? I checked my sound menu and it does list my soundcard as "Internal Audio" 1 Output/ 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex. Output volume is at 100% and not muted.

I have upgraded to 11.04, but now I can't seem to disable system sounds. There used to be a window under sound preferences where you could select the sound for various events, like when you type and you hit a limit in the input field. I can't find where I can disable certain system sounds, which I find very annoying. I use Ubuntu classic.

My computer is making clicking sounds that apparently come from the speakers. When I turn down the volume they get softer and then go away. They have no pattern that I have been able to recognize. There will be one or two, then quiet, then seven or eight in quick succession, etc. I run Hardy Heron on a 4 year old Dell Inspiron B120 laptop.

I already tried some steps I saw in some threads that has the same problem too but it became worse, I no more [completely] sounds anymore.

Hi, I have a Creative HS-1200 headset. When I am listening to sound through it, and something makes a motion on screen(compiz, movie...really anything) then the sound is distorted. Like it takes a nanosecond pauses to redraw. This does not happen with my normal soundcard. Can anyone tell me how can I fix this?
