Ubuntu :: No Sound In 9.10 With Twist?

Apr 7, 2010

As I have seen all across my research into the problem, many people are having difficulties with the "modem driver" and sound in 9.10 (especially on Asus computers). I have already tried looking into alsa drivers and the whatnot suggested in various threads to no avail. Being as my sound was working before the driver was installed, the modem driver being a problem is logical. So I should just hit up the System>Administration>Hardware Drivers tool and remove the Modem driver, right? Herein lies my problem. I have installed that driver in the past, I remember doing so, yet it does not appear on the list of drivers installed, therefore it cannot be removed by my limited knowledge. Is there a way around this?

Ubuntu :: Screen On Ssh Login With A Twist ?

May 24, 2010

I have managed to get screen to run on ssh login using this guide: [url]

My .zshrc has this in it now:

Code:

It works perfect but I have come across a problem. On startup I run rtorrent in a deamonised screen. So when I login now I get auto attached to that screen!

Ouput of screen -ls

Code:

There is a screen on:

1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-chris.

Is it possible to make screen ignore the rtorrentdeamon screen so I dont get attached to it?

I never attach to that screen so even stopping any reattacheing would also work.

Hardware :: Dual Head Monitors Under Nvidia With A Twist?

Oct 15, 2010

I have an Nvidia card that supports two monitors. Actually I have it setup. The problem I am having is I want to turn one of my monitors sideways so I can read forms easier. I can do this with just one monitor. RandR works fine with that. But it seems that when the system makes the two monitors into one long one it will not allow me to tweak the rotation in RandR.

Is there something I am missing. I deal with a lot of contracts and forms. And when I am reading them I hate scrolling. So I thought this could be an option. I have searched the net for 6 hours now. Maybe I do not know what I should be searching for.

CentOS 5 :: A Twist On The Boot Installation USB Flash Drive?

Sep 23, 2010

A Twist on the Boot Installation USB Flash Drive Have made numerous attempts at making a bootable installation USB Flash drive for CentOS 5.5 but in one way or another they all came up short.Using dd to apply bootdisk.img to a flash drive per the installation instructions seems to take over the entire device even though it only needs about 10 megabytes.Using the method outlined in the Wiki article Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS and other similar methods causes vmlinuz and initrd to load very slowly. About 50 seconds compared to normal of less than 10 seconds. The dots going across the screen is like watching paint dry.Data partition not accessible to Windows machines.

The following adaptation of the Wiki content article Set Up a USB Key to Install CentOS by Phil Schaffner overcomes the aforementioned short falls. Much thanks to those who created the original content sources and processes. None of the following is originally mine. I just altered it a bit to overcome the aforementioned short falls.

Overview: Objective of the following procedure is to create a CentOS bootable flash disk also containing install iso and kickstart file, that does not suffer from the aforementioned short falls. Partition 1 Installation iso, kickstart file and anything else such as post install scripts, etc. Partition 2 Boot Partition ~15 megabytes.

Ubuntu :: Sound: Mic Doesn't Work - Audio Input Level Graphically Shown In Sound Preferences Shows No Fluctuations In Sound

Aug 3, 2010

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.

Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sound With New Sound Card - Web Browser Is Unable To Play Any Sound

Mar 24, 2010

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.

I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Via Vt1708s Azalia No Sound When Starting Jack Sound Server?

Jun 7, 2011

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.

I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.

I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.

Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?

Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.

21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = Connection refused

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

Ubuntu :: Test Sound - No Application Sound Through Front Audio Socket - 10.04

Jun 22, 2011

Strange one. Just upgraded my mother-in-law's computer from 8.04 to 10.04 via the update manager. All seems to be working beautifully except ...

* When I run gstreamer-properties and do an output test I get a test sound through the headphones plugged into the front audio socket of the machine using the 'Analogue Headphones' setting in Sound Preferences. (This rules out dead headphones.)

* When I try to play audio through any app I get no sound through the headphones, but if I change the setting to 'Analogue Output' in Sound Preferences I get audio loud and clear through the speakers which are plugged into the audio socket at the rear of the machine. how the gstreamer-properties test is getting audio to the front socket I guess I'd be getting somewhere.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tuner Card Not Feeding Sound Through Onboard Sound?

Aug 9, 2011

I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.

Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.

Ubuntu Installation :: A7N8X Deluxe Sound Fresh Install Sound Is Muffled And All Bass?

Jan 14, 2010

Recently installed Ubuntu 9.1 following an easy how to. The install session went really well, smooth and only had one little speed bump when deciding which drive to install to (running raid and did not want to loose other partition). Like most speed bumps I got passed it. Ran all the updates then decided to start listening to music with Rythmbox Music Player. The sound coming out of my Klipsch Pro Media 4.1 was muffled and sounded like just the subwoofer was on. I checked all connections and they were fine. I tried looking for equalizer but did not find it and then noticed the sound was like a skipping record. So I looked it up and came across some posts that I could not figure out if they were for my problem. Seemed to me they were just leading me in circles.

I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.
