Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines. And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba And Windows Networking - Read / Write Access To All Folders Contents From Both Machines

Mar 9, 2011

Ive managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address 127.0.0.1 Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

Networking :: Get Internet Access On Desktop Computer Through Networking?

Sep 10, 2010

I'm not really a newbee in Linux but I am a newbee in networking. I have both a Ubuntu laptop and a Gentoo desktop computer. I have just bought me the MBR1000 Cradlepoint router and it works great with my Verizon USB 760 modem plugged in it. I can now send and receive email on my Ubuntu laptop. I like it.My Gentoo desktop computer is just sitting there with no Internet access because my Verizon modem is no longer plugged into it but plugged into the router instead. Only my laptop now has Internet access. The laptop has an integrated wireless card built in the MB but my desktop has no such capability.

Is there a way (besides buying a wi-fi adapter) to get Internet access on my desktop computer through networking so that the router would give both computers Internet access at the same? My Gentoo desktop does have an ethernet adapter that perhaps I could useThe router has several LAN ports and one WAN port, both unused.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cant Access Outside Network

Mar 10, 2010

I setup this ubuntu 9.10 server (32bit), at first I did DHCP and it gave me an address, I updated and downloaded most of the packages I needed at that time.

I switched the IP from DHCP to static IP and now I cant access outside my network. with ping or to download packages. I can however login via ssh over my network.

The only changes I made were the hostname and the static IP

This is my /etc/network/interfaces

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Access Apache From Outside The LAN?

Mar 18, 2010

I have set up a hostname on dyndns.com and configured my router to forward port 8181, but I cannot view it from the internet (FF says "can't establish a connection to the server"). The DNS is ok, is just the apache webserver that doesn't work.

I can acces my webserver from
http://localhost:8181 (loopback)
http://192.168.1.1:8181 (in the LAN)
BUT NOT <hostname>.dyndns.com
Here is my site configuration

[Code]...

So, what's the matter? How can I reach my apache from the internet? Also, I read about routers loopback errors, but this seems not related to it, since I tried to get it through a proxy server, and it failed

Ubuntu Networking :: Restricting Ssh Access To LAN

Jun 29, 2010

I have a desktop (picard), and I want to be able to connect to it from my sisters laptop (zuma) to quickly scp files from my machine to hers. At the same time I don't want the whole world to be able to connect to my machine via SSH. We're connected through a router. I've tried adding the line

"ListenAddress 192.168.0.0"

to /etc/ssh/sshd_config, but this prevents me from being able to connect to my machine from another on the network. From my understanding of the ListenAddress directive, I would assume "ListenAddress 192.168.0.0" would allow my sister's address through (192.168.0.192).

Am I missing something?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - How To Access Files Through VPN

Jun 30, 2010

My system reports it successfully connected to the VPN at my workplace (pptp / windows server). So I had to enter my username and password in the VPN configuration screen, etc. My machine has Ubuntu 10.04. I tried to find out how to open the files on the server. In windows, after opening the vpn I would go to this location in the file manager:
\company-fs1UsersJulian_b
This would show me the files I am looking for. In the linux terminal, and the Nautilus file manager, these locations do not exist. I tried using mount.cifs to mount this location and it didn't work. (fails with these messages : mounting the DFS root for a particular server not implemented yet no ip address specified and hostname not found). How do I get to these files on the Windows share?

Ubuntu Networking :: No Network Access On 10.04?

Aug 18, 2010

I purchased an Acer Aspire 7745G yesterday and installed Ubuntu as soon as I opened up the computer.

There appears to be a big problem however. Neither the wireless nor the LAN / ethernet are working.

'ifconfig -a' gives two items: lo and pan0. I believe pan0 is the bluetooth.

The wireless icon at the top right says "No network devices available". Network Tools shows the same results.

If I plug in an ethernet cord, nothing happens.

This is a fresh Ubuntu 10.04.1 downloaded this morning from ubuntu.com. I tried installing three times (USB, CD, DVD) including data checks on the disks. Same problem all three times.

I am guessing this is some kind of driver issue, but since I have no Internet access, I cannot do a Ubuntu Update and have Ubuntu find the drivers for me.

EDIT: The wireless and ethernet are working in Windows 7.

My Network Manager Applet 0.8.1 when moused over displays "networking disabled". Left-click yields "No network devices are available". Right-clicking shows the option to enable networking but it's blacked out.

lshw -c net yields the following:

Networking :: Cannot Access Internet From Within Ubuntu 9.10

Jan 25, 2010

I can not access the internet from within ubuntu. I have tried pidgin firefox and ping but I do not get a reply with any of them. I do however get full access using Virtual Box OSE running Windows server 2003 running inside the machine. This is not a one off as I often have trouble connecting to internet from inside ubuntu but usually disabling then enabling networking works.

My system:
OS: Ubuntu 9.10
Wireless card: Edimax wireless 802.11b/g Turbo Mode PCI adapter.

Here is the corresponding bit from lshw:
Code:
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
vendor: RaLink
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:05:00.0
logical name: wmaster0
version: 00
serial: 00:1f:1f:24:43:ca
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list logical ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rt61pci ip=192.168.1.255 latency=32 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg
resources: irq:20 memory:ea100000-ea107fff

I'm really confused as to why a VM would be able to access the net and not the host.

I have a share directory, read-only, and often divx files are streamed directly from it rather than copied first. I want to be able to see what user is accessing what file. Should be a fairly simple task, but im just not sure how its done.It can be terminal based, doesnt have to live and constantly updating, just a report. But a prog with a GUI would be useful too.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can Ping But No Internet Access

Jan 5, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 with Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit that I just installed last night. I'm using a Zyxel G-102 Wireless card and Actiontec GT701WG wireless modem.

When I try to connect to the 'net, the network does show up and it connects strong (100%). It also shows multiple neighbors networks. It pings at 99% success (with over 900 sent as I write this) but when I open Firefox it can't connect, it just times out. I've used WEP security and have switched off security as well. I tried hooking up to the modem via USB and get the same result. It acts like a Firewall issue but there isn't one installed - at least that I can find and the Firewall in the modem is off. I ran FF in root with gksu firefox as suggested in another thread. I tried www.ubuntu.com and the header loaded but that was all. Then it timed out.

I'm new to Linux but have used Puppy Linux with this machine and card, etc. so I know it can/does work with Linux. I wanted a more refined distro and chose Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: Configuring Samba To Access A NAS?

Mar 4, 2010

I'm having problems in accessing a storage device (NAS 200 Linksys) in a network via Ubuntu. I think the problem is with the configuration of Samba.

On my computer the login and password are the same in Ubuntu (9.04), samba and Win XP.

Under windows I view the device in the network and, when I click on its icon, a window opens with the directories that have access.

Under Ubuntu, I can see all the computers in my workgroup and the device. However when I click on its icon only a blank window is opened.

I share printers without problems.

In my settings for the samba security = user.

Does anyone know if there is any configuration that allows access to the NAS?
