Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Win7 Through VNC?

Oct 13, 2010

am using win7 trying to connect to a ubuntu box using vnc. I managed to get it working for me with the full gui viewable. Then one of my housemates played around with some display settings for the backround and all of a sudden vnd only comes up with a terminal.

I went into terminal and attempted to start gdm and got this output

root@ben-desktop:/home/ben# gdm start

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To The Win7 Homegroup?

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop With Win7 Connecting Through Desktop (karmic)?

Mar 26, 2010

I have a laptop with win7 and I would like to connect to the internet through my desktop pc's connection. I have Karmic on the desktop and use a cable modem and I'm thinking about buying a router to solve this problem but I wouldn't know how to set it up in Ubuntu nor which router would be the best or easiest to set up. I saw this site [URL] and I'm torn between the TP-Link TL-WR741ND Wireless Lite N Router and the D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615, because these are the cheapest ones and I can't afford much more than that.

Networking :: After Upgrading From Win7-32 To WIN7-64 Can't Mount Cifs Shares

Jul 21, 2010

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.

First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:

I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.

If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.

From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails

Code:

I try this manually now:

Code:

Next I try to mount it:

Code:

I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.

Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.

What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

Ubuntu Installation :: Win7 Bootloader Is Broken / Doesn't Seem To Detect The Win7?

May 2, 2011

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 And Win7 - Wireless N USB Adapter

Jan 19, 2011

First off my wireless use to work on the live usb and now doesn't. It also has changed behavior in windows where the button to activate/deactivate is no longer flashing blue for orange while booting windows and then going solid blue by the time it gets to where I type my password in. Now it no longer does the flash and when I get to where I enter my password I have to push the button twice to get it blue (active). If this can't get resolved can you recommend a wireless N usb adapter that will work both in windows 7 and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Can't Connect To Win7 Share?

Jan 18, 2010

My Ubuntu Desktop (9.10, 64-bit) VM can't connect to my Windows 7 (64-bit, Ultimate) File Share using Nautilus. I enter "smb://<comuterName>" in the address bar and then it comes up with a password dialog (see screenshot) and then after entering the correct login info, the dialog disappears for a second or two but then reappears again. The dialog always comes back up and the share is never mounted. Connecting from an XP box on the network to the windows 7 share works just fine. Connecting from the Ubuntu machine to the windows 7 share using the appropriate 'smbmount' command works just fine. Connecting from the Ubuntu machine (using the nautilus GUI) to the XP box (password protected) works just fine. Then I turned off password protection in Win7, rebooted the win7 machine, and still all of the above tests turned out the same. And the Ubuntu machine still doesn't connect to the windows share using the nautilus GUI, and still displays the password dialog even though no password is required anymore. I tried using smbclient to view the shares, here is the output (not sure if I should be trying something else using the smbclient program):eddie@eddie-ubuntu:~$ smbclient -L eddie-win7 Enter eddie's password: session setup failed: SUCCESS - 0

I'd like to know how to connect Ubuntu to the windows 7 share using the nautilus GUI. If it's a bug, I'd like to file it (I think it is). But first I would like some direction trouble-shooting to make sure it is in fact a bug. (I think I read elsewhere on this forum that someone connected Karmic to win7 share, so maybe it's not a reproducible bug. But then again, maybe they weren't using 64-bit Karmic...)

Ubuntu Networking :: Very Slow Connection Speeds But Okay On Win7

Apr 5, 2010

I am currently staying on a university campus in Taiwan. Internet on Ubuntu Lucid 64bit here is often painfully slow, except for connections to Taiwanese websites. I dual boot with Windows 7, and there is no problem there. For instance, I downloaded the same piece of software (Spideroak) on both Win and Ubuntu, with Ubuntu I had to try repeatedly as the download would not complete, and in the end it took several hours to download. On W7, it took 10 minutes. What is Windows and Ubuntu doing differently?

I tried disabling ipv6 for this session by running sudo sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1, as a number of posts mention improving connection speed that way, but no effect.

I know that websites from Taiwan are working well, because I am getting my Ubuntu updates from a Taiwanese mirror: updates are fast, except for packages in the 'partner' repos (presumably not loaded from the mirror) which take hours to load, if at all. I don't want to depend on Windows for large downloads... (I don't want to depend on Windows for anything).

Ubuntu Networking :: Printing To Win7 Shared Printer?

Sep 5, 2010

I apologize if I'm a little wordy. I'll give the problem, then a detailed list of my setup (to help troubleshoot). Problem: I can't print from Ubuntu 10.4 on my Win7 shared printer. I also can't connect to the Win7 computer sharing the printer (probably a related problem).

Error Message:

1.) I click on Places, Network, Windows Network. I get an error that says "Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server."

2.) I click on System, Administration, Printing, Add, Printer, Network Printer, Windows Printer via SAMBA, Browse..., and I get this error "No Print Shares, There were no print shares found. Please check that the Samba service is marked as trusted in your firewall configuration. To do this select System->Administration->Firewall from the main menu."

Network Configuration: I have a wireless/wired network (using a router) where the Ubuntu machine connects wirelessly and the Win7 machine connects wired. The Win7 machine is on a Win7 homegroup and custom named "workgroup". There is a username/password to log into the Win7 Machine. My other Win7 laptop connects just fine to the Win7 desktop's shared printer (and network drives). I know it isn't a issue of it not working (at least with other Win7 machines)

Problem: I'm assuming there is probably a setting in Win7 that needs adjusting (although I've looked at about everything I can find). I also don't know much about Ubuntu so it could very well be something I need to setup in Ubuntu. I checked already to make sure that SAMBA and the smbfs plugin is installed.

Ubuntu Networking :: 25% Slower Than Win7 - Browser Firefox

Jun 17, 2011

Just installed the latest 11.04 64bit ubuntu, using std cd install alongside windows7, ticking the "add all extras" option, to ensure I got all the latest drivers etc.. The pc is brand new

Acer emachines E644 - AMD 2 Core C-50
3Gb DDR3 mem
500 Gb hard drive

Pre-installed: 64bit Win 7 home premium I've literally changed nothing in win7 other than using wubi to install ubuntu 1st time around (ubuntu appears as a win program - and was un-installed as such). Note: It is too late to now check, but......... under wubi/win7 I had no sense that the browser firefox was running slow - i didn't do a speedtest.net cos of other priorities (and it seemed fine). On advice, I started again (new partitions etc). The Problem: Ubuntu is now 25% slower (broadband) than Win7! Actually, it feels worse than that - more like it was on my previous lap top that had 512Mb ram running xp. Here are the results after switching os's a couple of times.

[Code]....

Firefox managed one spurious result of 5.89, but the graph (on the speedtest display) was absolutely all over the shop (like it's overall results). Compare that to iExplorer - total stability, and in fact, more like 30% faster + a much better ping. Anyway, I guess you know all this, I've seen that plenty of others have noticed this speed drop in the past, so:

Ubuntu Networking :: No Access To Win7 Shared Folder?

Sep 1, 2011

I've set up a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 32bit and shared specific folders on my Win7 PC. Everything should work okay as they both can see each other, but when I try on Ubuntu to access the Win7 shared folder it asks me for username and password. In Win7 I'm always logged in as Administrator with no password set and Ubuntu won't let me connect to it leaving the password blank. It just keeps asking for my username/password over and over again without any kind of error message. It doesn't come up with 'access denied' or anything, it just keeps refreshing the username/password login/connect gui so I can't say which side of the fence the problem is occurring on though I suspect it's on the Ubuntu side.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 10.10 Network With Win7 Over Cat5 Cable?

Mar 6, 2011

Im a long time Ubuntu user (since 5.04), but networks were never my speciality, I have a desktop running 10.10, connected to the internet trough a US robotics modem (connection eth1), and i want to share its network with my laptop running win7, over a cat5 cable (connection eth0), but the problem is I dont seem to understand what i am doing wrong, what the missing steps required, or in which end is the problem (either ubuntu or windows side).

From what I could grasp was needed googling about the subject, i already set the eth0 connection to share with other computers (in network manager edit connections auto eth0 ipv4 configuration set to share with other computers). Also using the cli set eth0 for static ip using :

Code:
sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 Now the question is what i am missing? or is everything needed already done and i just have to properly configure the win7 side (which i already checked several times)?

Here is my ifconfig output:

Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet Endereo de HW 00:01:29:a6:55:fe

Fedora Networking :: Wired Networking Not Connecting In 12 With Windows Internet Connection Sharing?

Jan 16, 2011

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.

Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Networking :: DNSMasq - Cannot Ping Win7 Machine By Name

Mar 4, 2011

This is the scenario: gentoo box (distro shouldn't be relevant here) and win7 box. Gentoo box is dhcp and dns server, via dnsmasq. From win7, I can ping gentoo by both ip and name. No problem there. From Gentoo, I can ping win7 by ip, but not by name. The dnsmasq log seems to receive the name ok, it's "Tere-PC". I have been looking around for many hours now and I know there must be something simple I am not taking into account.

Code:
dnsmasq-dhcp: 55480937 available DHCP range: 192.168.0.50 -- 192.168.0.150
dnsmasq-dhcp: 55480937 client provides name: Tere-PC
dnsmasq-dhcp: 55480937 vendor class: MSFT 5.0 .....

Code:
# ping Tere-PC
ping: unknown host Tere-PC
Is there any way that dnsmasq, which is supposedly a dns server, will link this name to the given ip?
