Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Crash After Upgrading To 11.04?
Apr 30, 2011
I just upgraded to Kubuntu 11.04 and I have a problem with network manager. When I plug in my LAN, everything works fine, but when I try to use my wireless connection, everything hangs after a few seconds. I'm guessing it's a cpu overload problem, since CPU fan starts after a while. But I can't move my mouse and keyboard doesn't work either. I tried network-manager-gnome and reinstalling wireless driver, but it didn't solve the problem.

I've recently installed release 11.04 and am trying to get wireless networking operational. I'm using a netgear wg111t usb wireless adapter. I've installed ndiswrapper and have got the netgear windows drivers installed ok. My problem is when I try to connect wirelessly I get a system crash, think it tends to be called a kernel panic in linux. The network connection is confirmed and about 5-10 seconds later the crash happens. I've updated the linux kernel to 2.6.39-0-generic but thats not helped.
I can connect with a cable but that is somewhat limiting.

sent the following email to Broadcom [URL]. I'll post an update if I receive a response. The current Linux STA 802.11 driver causes my system to crash.I've verified this under Ubuntu 11.04 and Linux Mint 11(an ubuntu derivative). Oddly enough, everything worked find under Ubuntu 10.10. My chipset is the 4321, my CPU is an AMD Phenom II 920, and the motherboard is an ASUS M3A78-EM. I tried the STA driver that ships with Ubuntu as well as compiling the one at [URL], including the patch for kernel versions > 2.6.37.
I am confident that the linux driver is the problem. If I connect my machine to my router using an ethernet cable, everything works fine. Also, the wifi adapter works fine under Windows. The symptoms are that the wifi adapter appears to connect to my network correctly and works fine for short transfers. But when I try a larger transfer, such as a speed test or streaming an mp3, one of three things happens after about 5 to 10 seconds:
1) The screen remains in graphics mode but locks up, including the mouse pointer. No keyboard input has any effect.
2) The screen goes into text mode and repeats the following over and over: [435.610002] ehci_hcd 0000:00:13.2CI-DMA:Out of IOMMU space for 18 bytes.
3) The screen goes into text mode and prints what appear to be CPU register contents. I took a picture of this with my phone if it will help, but obviously the text is kind of hard to make out.

I have an HP 311c netbook which was dual booted XP home and Ubuntu 10.04. Everything worked fine apart from the internal wireless modem (the only reason I needed XP as it worked under Windows) I then upgraded to 10.10 and that started my network problems.
I upgraded Ubuntu using terminal and update-manager, which went ok. The network was identified, but more often than not it now seems to crash the network (and seems to happen sporadically too) - seems to be at some stage whenever the netbook is on now. This then prevents all other PCs/Ipods from accessing the internet. The only way to recover is to reboot my wireless network and the internet modem (and shutdown the netbook).
I got so infuriated with it that I clean installed from a USB key I created, Wireless network runs fine with all other PCs and IP equipment
Network: Linksys 11 B
Internet modem Virgin Media
One strange thing that happened when I upgraded, but seems to have now disappeared, is that I managed to get it to identify and actually use the internal modem, although that 'Mobile Internet' option under Network Manager has now disappeared from the list, so I cannot activate it..

I upgraded the wireless card in my laptop (sony VAIO CW) due to the original Atheros being incurably slow. The new card is an Intel 6300 ultimate n. In Windows 7, after installing the relevant drivers everything worked without a hitch. In my Ubuntu 10.04 installation, however, I have been unable to get it working.Initially I had the compat-wireless modules installed (linux-backports-modules-wireless-generic), as I had done so to try and get the Atheros card working better. I tried removing all of these, and that made the difference that iwconfig now (instead of nothing) listed

I have recently upgraded my USB wireless network connection for one of my computers to N from G. As I am (temporarily) based in China the device (and all documentation) are in Chinese. I THINK it is based on a Ralink 28XX chip. I am running Ubuntu 10.04. Network Manager claims that the wireless network is disconnected does not list any sources This is the basic info that I am able to find (I am using these commands in ignorance, by the way!) lsusb shows:
Code:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 148f:3070 Ralink Technology, Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
dmesg shows (after plugging the thing in):
Code:

Every single time I enter the network manager to edit connections is crashes on exit. I am running opensuse on an Asus eee PC 1000HE with an Atheros network card. The crash report follows :
Distribution: openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
Gnome Release: 2.28.2 (null) (SUSE)
BugBuddy Version: 2.28.0
System: Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-default #1 SMP 2010-03-16 21:25:39 +0100 i686
[code]....
As an extra point. I wish I could disconnect individual networks instead of just disabling networking to disconnect. I think the newer version of the network manager does this.

I currently have a WiFi network at home that serves two PC's, a Laptop (all SUSE 11.3) and a couple of WiFi radios. I also use IPCop as the Firewall. The system currently uses 802.11g, but the PC's and Laptop really struggle to achieve any reasonable internet data speeds, particularly as their RF range to the Wireless Router is very disappointing, so I have a couple Wireless Access Points. Unfortunately, whilst these WAPs might slightly improve RF coverage, connecting to the Router via one of them only serves to slow down the internet upload and download speeds even further. (Not much point in paying for expensive 4M internet access if I am only achieving a typical download of 500-600k!)
I want to completely replace my 802.11g with 802.11n - to both improve range and throughput. I'm looking at the 'Netgear Range Max Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router' as this also has 2.4GHz (my WiFI radios are only 2.4GHz compatible). Unless, of course, anyone has any good reason to recommend I DON'T purchase it? My problem is that I am struggling to find up to date, accurate information that can advise me on which 802.11n (2.4GHz and 5GHz) PCI cards, PCMCIA and USB Adapters are compatible with SUSE.

today I installed Opensuse 11.3 on my new laptop, a Samsung R540. Initially I got my Logitech bluetooth mouse working because I hate the touch pad, then I got the wireless network working by upgrading the kernel with the broadcom-wl package at which point the Logitech bluetooth mouse stopped working. I am able to detect the mouse when I go to add new devices using the gnome-bluetooth applet but it times out when it tries to connect.

I recently installed Suse 11.4 on my Dell Latitude 2110 netbook using the KDE live distribution, and, after that, the Broadcom wireless ceased to work. To enable the wireless connection, I have to press Fn + F6. If I do it now, the wireless led indicator turns on for a couple of seconds, then turns off again. A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

I often connects my laptop (Asus EEE) to my HTC desire hd with the wifi hotspot. But this doesn't work since yesterday when I upgraded to 11.04. When I connect the laptop to the phone the screen on the laptop goes black with a lot of scrolling text then it freezes.
This worked out of the box without any problems with 10.10.

When I'm running Ubuntu everything seems to work perfectly until I try to connect to a wireless network. My wireless card supposedly works out of the box because I can scan for wireless networks without a problem. The only time it becomes a problem is when I try to connect to a wireless network. Doing so causes my computer to freeze, requiring a hard-restart. I disabled the driver that comes with Ubuntu, and installed ndiswrapper with my card's corresponding windows driver. As soon as I modprobe'd ndiswrapper, my computer froze as it did before and required a hard restart. This was about a month ago, and since then I have tried OpenSUSE and Fedora, but these distros also did the same thing. I eventually gave up and installed Windows 7 and everything works perfectly. However, I'm now growing tired of using Windows. (I do a lot of linux server administration, and it's much nicer to do from a linux machine.) I would very much like to try to get Ubuntu working on this laptop again. Does anyone know what the solution may be?
EDIT: If you are experiencing the same problem, DISABLE your PCI LAN card in your BIOS. Wireless should work fine. Seems that the LAN and WLAN card have a similar ID or something and linux confuses the two, so disabling LAN card solves the issue of not being able to use the wireless.

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 after not using linux on my PC for a few months. After the upgrade, everything worked fine except my wireless card no longer works. It seems to have disappeared from my available interfaces. Here's the output from lspci:
Code:
$ lspci | grep Wireless
04:00.0 Network controller: RaLink RT3092 Wireless 802.11n 2T/2R PCIe
...and iwconfig:
[Code]...
I've been through posts about similar problems that did fixes using things like blacklist and modprobe, but none of these worked. I've searched the RaLink webpages for more up to date linux drivers but found nothing that worked - I downloaded the RT3090_LinuxSTA_V2.3.1.6 driver and followed the instructions to try and build it, but this didn't work.

So here's the deal: I was happily using 10.10 to create ad-hoc wifi networks on my Dell Vostro 3700 with Broadcom BCM4313. Everything worked 100%
After upgrading to 11.04, I am still able to connect to existing Wi-Fi networks, BUT I can't create ad-hoc networks anymore for some reason!
Specifically, NetworkManager is failing with its association request to the driver. Repeatedly. Until I get another screen in the GUI prompting me for the password details.
