Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Sign In Causes Total System Freeze
Nov 14, 2010
Ubuntu boots fine with wireless turned off via the laptop wireless button on the case, and fine with wireless on but no networks remembered, but as soon as I try to connect to a network, I get the strobing wireless icon in the top panel and then the whole system freezes. It switches to a black screen with a non-flashing terminal cursor in the top left corner of the screen plus a frozen mouse pointer in the last position from when Ubuntu was working. If I force a power-off after this, which I have to, then unless I manually turn off wifi using the laptop button then Ubuntu never boots and I just get a black screen after the BIOS screen. I can connect to the internet via wired connection.

I installed 10.10 this morning from the live CD. Everything working perfectly whilst at home, but now I'm on the move I'm having troubles. At my parents' house trying to connect to their wifi. Wifi is on, their network is detected, I can go in and enter the WAP key and I get the strobing wifi icon in the top panel as though it's signing in, but after about 4 seconds I get a black screen and everything freezes. All that remains on the screen is the mouse pointer in its last position and a non-flashing cursor in the top left.

I'm experiencing constant system freezes, and was wondering which log file to view in order to determine what is causing it. I switched over from linux mint as it was giving me the same issues now being experience on my debian setup.
When my system does freeze, the keyboard is unresponsive (caps lock won't even turn on) and I have to use the power button to get out of it. The only thing that does work is my wireless mouse which I can still move around.

I have strange behaviour on my portable computer Asus UX30. I'm using latest Ubuntu 10.10 release. The main problem, and the most annoying, is a system freeze on shutdown, suspend, hibernate or even restart. For a week I'm trying to find a solution on the web, but no result. From what I noticed, computer freezes when a wireless card is turned off or on. Here are some basic info from wireless card:
Code:
sudo lshw -class Network
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: RT3091 Wireless 802.11n 1T/2R PCIe
vendor: RaLink
[Code]....

Ubuntu 9.04, all updates
Latest firmware, etc
abit SG-95 motherboard
2 GB Ultra DDR2
Intel Celeron 360 cpu
PNY GeForce 9500 GT video
Started 2 weeks ago, random and total freeze of system (video, keyboard, mouse).
Nothing useful in th log, other than it occurs at the same time syslogd restart show up in the log.
I don't even know where to begin, or how to troubleshoot the issue if nothing shows up in the log... could use some help, please.
Problem occurs with or without the nvidia drivers installed. Ubuntu or windows, same thing..connected or not connected to the internet
I've ran every memory test I can find, with no issues reported. HD seems OK. No other symptom that I can find, other than it croaking, usually when I'm in the middle of a broadcast or recording.
Is the only machine I have for now, I need to figure out what's wrong and replace it as quickly as possible, so I can get back to work.

I have installed Slackware 13.1 without a problem and have a working wired ethernet connection. However I need to set up wireless but each time I try to do this using wicd I have a total system crash during the start up screens at the very last line before the welcome line appears.
Nothing works to resolve it, and I need to press and hold the start button and restart. I have checked the md5sum, installed the software again several times but the same happens each time which results in me having to reinstall.
I have installed wicd using slackpkg update, then slackpkg install wicd.
I have also tried downloading wicd from the slackware /extras folder and installing it on its own. Either way the same happens.
I have tried various manual approaches to setting up wireless following various links but again without success.
I now have a clean install again but am not wanting the same to happen.
Can anyone suggest what I might need to do?
I am using an intel Pentium 4, 2.53 ghz, 512Mb ram, GeForce4 MX 440.

Dell Mini 9, 2GB RAM, 32 GB SSD, Ubuntu 10.04 UNR . At Panera, and other places that have free Internet access but require signing in on a page they load, I cannot get on to the Internet. Their sign-in page comes up on my iPod Touch but does not come up on my DM9. This happens no matter which browser I have running on my DM9 (I have Firefox and Chromium). And since I can't sign in, I don't get onto the Internet. Initially I am connected to their router and the signal is strong but because I don't sign in (I'm assuming here), I am disconnected. What do I need to do to see their sign-in page so I can get connected. At locations that have no sign-in pages I have no problems whether or not a password is required.

I installed Lucid a week ago and have been having a blast with it after a two year break from Ubuntu (been using Mandriva). So the other day I went to hibernate the system and it froze. I naturally did a hard reset and when I log back in, no network connection. That is to say, the system tray says it's connected but there is no LAN light on the router or network card. ifconfig shows it's connected too. When I boot into XP (cringes) it works just fine.
No specifics ATM but the card is a D-Link PCI with a Realtek R8***** chipset

I have one desktop PC I'd like to use as a jukebox. It's installed in the basement as a black box, with only SSH access, and it has got a minimal CentOS 5.3 install with MPD and NCMPC. It's connected to the hi-fi in the basement, so I can stream music to it when I'm downstairs. Since I didn't want to use cables everywhere, I bought a PCI wireless card, with a RT2561 chip.
Until recently this card worked OK with Linux. Recent kernel version even have out-of-the-box support for it, except of course you still have to download the firmware from the Ralinktech website.
I gave the thing a static IP configuration by editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0, interface went up fine, I can ping the machine and SSH into it OK. Now the only problem is, when I do a shutdown -h now, the machine "hangs" while trying to bring wlan0 down. (In case you wonder: I temporarily attached a monitor to it, since wanting to know what goes on while shutting down in an SSH session is a chicken-and-egg situation :)). I actually have to hard-reboot it (by pressing RESET).

I was just trying to get used to everything and I noticed something in the task bar that said you have updates that failed to install (or something along those lines). So I opted to install them manually with YAST2 and during the installation some of the files were failing to download, I was unsure what to do with these files (their was a ton of them, I had to actually sit at my pc for over an hour because I couldn't let it go through on it's own due to all the failing downloads and installs) and so I just decided to skip them, everything seemed to be going along normally. Then my computer froze, so I restarted and tried to boot into opensuse and it kept freezing, (I even went to my brothers house to play the xbox with him for a while) and no matter how long I waited for it wouldn't boot into opensuse. I tried the failsafe mode and it just kept coming up with an error (I probably should have written the error down, I wasn't really thinking about that at the time) and after about half a dozen tries, decided to reformat everything all over again.
So with these failing downloads in YAST2, what am I supposed to do with them? If I retry they just keep failing, so the only other options are abort and skip, am I supposed to skip them or is that what caused this to happen in the first place?

Today while browsing the web and attempting to listen to a mp3 file on the site of a musician, this laptop with Lucid CRASHED badly! It went into a black screen and the only solution was a reboot! I am not a masochist, but I could repeat the crash a couple of times just to verify it.
This is the worst crash that I have seen on GNU/Linux! I expect things to go down in a more controlled way: maybe first the crash of a plug-in, then the crash of a web browser, eventually the crash of a windows manager. But I don't like seeing that playing an mp3 is leading to kernel crash on what is supposed to be a LTS-release!
Any observations of similar behavior or hints on the cause? Is it possible that the crash is related to intel graphics 85x on this system that are now very problematic on Lucid?
By the way, the music file in question is probably not malformed and plays perfectly on Mac and Windows. I am digging into system logs to try to find any record of the problem. For the the record: I've been around Ubuntu since 5.04, on Linux since 2003, on Unix since 1988, and on computers since 1979.

I want to calculate the total amount of memory used by the system, Someone please confirm if the below formula is correct.Quote:
((memUsed-mebBuffers-memCached)*100)/memUsed => totalMemoryUsed%
Code:
free -o
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 8167004 8115292 51712 0 87680 1444676
Swap: 8388584 3252996 5135588
((8115292-87680-1444676)*100/8115292) => 81%
As per the above calculation 81% of memory is used.Is this correct? and if so Am I running out of memory?what is the limit in % that I should maintain for a better performance?

How can you give total access to the system to a user other than root?
* Make the user a member of the root group.
* Change the UID of the user to 0.
* Add the user to the /etc/sudoers file.
I think none of these are correct answers.

DM9, 2GB RAM, 32GB SSD, Ubuntu 10.04 UNR.At Panera and at my local library there is a page that comes up when I try to connect to the Internet that is an agreement page. It comes up with my iPod Touch and with my MacBook. Using my DM9 that page does not come up for me to sign in so I can't get on the Internet.I have had Firefox and Chromium running at different times with the same results. When there is a WEP password or no password it connects. What do I need to do to get connected to the Internet at Panera and the like?

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 as a mythtv box and it works mostly fine. But occasionally the system will hang during booting and the last messages I can see are code...
So, I don't know. What is the problem? This system is supposed to run mostly unattended, I can't check all the time whether it booted alright.
So what can I do?

Lets assume we have a 100mbps connection between two servers in same switch. then How much is the total throughput of the connection between servers. For example if I am downloading with 70mbps from other server , do I still have 100mbps upload BW available ? or 30mbps is available ? in other words for a 100mbps connection , the limit of download+upload is 100mbps ? or we have 100mbps download and 100mbps upload available ?

My partner and I share the computer, so we are normally both logged in.
When we come to turn the computer off, one of us will log out then the other shuts down (to have a clean shutdown), but when either one of us uses 'Logout' the system just freezes, no response, nothing, have to turn the machine off via power button.
We can 'switch user' fine, and everything else appears ok but log out fails, I did try reporting a bug on this, but seems to have got taken over with people with dual screens / SLI cards, taking it over and its not the same thing.
I get the 'impression' its a graphics driver issue, I'm using the 'recommended' Nvidia driver (am at work and can't remember which version sorry).

I'm putting this in general, because I'm not sure if many of the specifics are relevant.I have an everex cloudbook which I purchased from eBay with hardy herron on it.I finally got around, today (I've had it for a year), to installing netbook remix 9.10 with a usb key I had also purchased from eBay.Now, during the upgrade (using update manager) from 9.10 to 10.04, the system appears to have frozen.(desktop frozen, no response to keyboard or mouse). Now, I'm not sure if something could still be happening inside there, and if it would be a good idea to let the machine site overnight before rebooting it. Frankly, it happened once already, and I rebooted, and update manager just took up where it left off once I logged in.
I have not determined what's causing these freezes. It's not a new machine, of course (everex, afaik, doesn't even exist now), so maybe netbook-remix is too taxing on the hardware? I installed xfce to get away from the bloated netbook-remix graphical menu garbage, which did seem to allow the system to run faster. Anyway, the real question here is, while the interface appears frozen, could the upgrade still be developing under the surface? (I hear a fan running in there. There is no hdd to spin, but flash memory, so I don't know if the fan is any indication of internal activity). Would you wait to reboot it? (update mgr indicated 4 hrs remaining to upgrade, in the installing upgrades phase, not downloading, appears it froze during "Running post-installation trigger install-info"). Or just reboot it and see what happens (get update mgr to start again?)? The system never froze on me with hardy. It was pretty quick and snappy, in fact.

Running Ubuntu 10.4 32bit (only) on my system with ati graphics card. I just ran a software update, and I believe a new kernel was installed. When I rebooted, I saw the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the system froze up and the screen went completely blank. Thinking it was a graphics issue, I tried to press escape to get into the grub bootloader. However, when I pressed escape at the proper time, the system just rebooted.
Thinking that grub was broken, I used a live cd to purge grub from my system and re-install it. When I rebooted, I got the same initial problem: I get the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the screen goes black and the system appears to be frozen. Again, if I press escape to try the grub bootloader, the system just reboots.

Nothing too major here but today I had a few programs open and was doing a bunch of things and suddenly the system froze.
I am on 10.04 LTS -
Are there checks that I can do to see if everything is ok?
I had to turn the power off and re-booted and everything is fine, or rather, seems to be 100% fine - but more out of curiosity Id like to see if there are some checks that I can do.
I think that ubuntu creates a log of activity if I am not mistaken?
