Ubuntu Networking :: Accessing A Workgroup Printer

I have an existing windows workgroup set up. (for those interested, at the moment we must keep two computers on windows for school reasons...but will change as quickly as the semester is over and run windows in virtual) anyway, the workgroup has an HP F300 printer. our Ubuntu computers can see the network, and access shared files and external hard drives. but, it does not see the printer. we are running 9.04 on one computer, and 9.10 on the other. i know from [url]that if i connect directly, the printer will work. how do i access the printer without connecting directly?
How can i get all these to talk to each other when I get rid of the Windows set up? can someone point me to a guide for resetting things on a Ubuntu network/workgroup?

i was trying to create a share in ubuntu.went to smb.conf and joined a workgroup but the name i gave for it was wrong..i fixed it later on..but the name of the workgroup won't go from the network..How can i delete the workgroup from the network?

I have one PC (morpheus) on which I've chosen to share a couple of folders in the home directory. The folders show the "Shared" icon in them and are chmod 777'd. I can access them by going to Dolphin -> Network -> Samba Shares -> Workgroup -> Morpheus -> Foldername ... but *only* on that same computer (Morheus). All my computers are running Kubuntu with KDE 4.5 and attached by ethernet.
If I try and go to Dolphin -> Network -> Samba Shares on *any* other computer, Dolphin just reports "Unable to find any workgroups in your local network. This might be cause by an enabled firewall." I've never set up a firewall on any of these computers. Do I need to open ports on my router just for this? Morpheus is set to DMZ mode on the router so it should accept *any* port request not assigned to another computer already.
I have a feeling that there's just something obvious I don't know, because in all my years of trying to get this to work on and off, I've never managed to find a decent *simple* CLI or GUI based tutorial or figure it out myself. The web just seems full of long threads of people having very specific problems unique to their situation trying to sort them out. I just want to share folders over a lan via KDE.

I need to reinstall the samba directory, mainly to get the default smb.conf. It appears I have to remove smbclient, which takes ubuntu-desktop with it (which I now know is mostly ok). Hopefully reinstalling those will then replace /etc/samba. There's enough troubleshooting samba threads out there for the rest. I'll flag this solved when I'm done.
I am working on setting up BackupPC on Maverick , for my network. I am unable to view my WinXP machine's shares if I type "sudo smbclient -L //JonDoe/" . However it works if I use the XP machine's IP "sudo smbclient -L //192.168.1.100/". Viewing the workgroup (with the proper name) in Nautilus only shows the Ubuntu machine. I ended up using multiple how-tos which had me install the following packages : Samba, smbfs, system-config-samba.
With all that nothing worked so I decided to uninstall the above with "remove completely" in synaptic, expecting everything to be completely gone. But /etc/samba with smb.conf still existed so I deleted it. OOPS!!! . Installing Samba after the uninstall did not create a new /etc/samba/ directory. Reinstalling smbclient in synaptic didn't create it either. Uninstalling smbclient with pull BackupPC with it. Sweet! I do have a firewall package installed which allows outgoing but blocks inbound traffic from outside my LAN. I will disable it when I get home.

I am using an Ubuntu 64 bit desktop. I need to create a network (the way you create a workgroup in windoz). I have two other machines running Ubuntu also and all connected to a 3-Com switch through ethernet. I would prefer not to use DHCP, and just have a simple network where I can share resources like drives and printers.

`I'm on 10.04 trying to access shares on a windows machine. The machine does not appear at all in windows network/workgroup. I can see these shares when I'm on my windows partition so I know the problem isn't with the network.

Here's what I have working now: one old Dell L933r (Ubuntu 8.04), one old homebuilt (Ubuntu 8.04), one Acer netbook (Ubuntu 9.10), and one HP netbook (Ubuntu 9.10); a Trendnet TEW-631BRP router; the Dell & the homebuilt are wired, and the netbooks are both wireless. The LAN was setup quite awhile ago, when I still had some Windows machines; I have no WIN machines now, and don't plan on any. There are times when I can "see" other machines on the LAN, and there are times when I can't - MSHOME and WORKGROUP are in view. How can I remove the LAN network in place, and start over, creating a LAN that will only be used by Ubuntu machines?

I've just recently got my samba confg working with a workgroup. I can view/access/modify windows machines on workgroup just fine. What I can't do is access shares created on ubuntu desktop. My ubuntu machine appears on Windows Workgroup, but denies to Windows users. When I try to create a share using Folder Sharing, I get this returned to me:

i am new using ubuntu 10.10 and so far i like it but the only thing i have problems is to be able to connect to the network i am running Windows 7 on the main pc and when i try to connect to the network (Click on Places, Network, Windows Network "icon appears" "right click on it" and get message Unable to mount location, "Failed to retrieve share list from server" i have try many solutions for the last 3 days but no luck can somebody i just want to share some music files and be able to connect to sound system and play the music

So everything seams to be fine on my F10 boxes networking. I can ping computers on the network with both LAN IP addresses, and their hostnames. However, I can only access my F10 box with a LAN IP. In windows, I go to view workgroup computers... only the windows systems. If I go to the F10 system with samba via the IP address it works fine, just can't get to it with a hostname.
I'm wanting a static IP of 192.168.1.22. And on the windows workgroup "workgroup".
I'm new to doing things with linux that are remotely difficult... and well, this has proven to be. I can't work out if this is a SMB problem, general networking...
smb.conf (I've ommited the top info segment due to forum character limit, as well as the SELINUX notes)

Similar to how Windows can list all computers in your workgroup (even if it's a slow process sometimes).
Can smbclient command do this or another samba util?

At first I installed debian 5 and I want enter on my workgroup using windows XP PCs, in same time I want use firewall now when I stop firewall I can access on the pcs but when I start iptables and open port for samba such as 137,138,138 and 445 I can't access on any PC on work group this is the output of iptables - L command:

I have two types of OS in my network windows (XP,7) and linux (debian 5.03, ubuntu 9.10 8.04, fedora 8) all of linux can see an reach the windows shared folders but windows can not reach linux shared folders what can I do fo fixing this problem what should I follow. I have to say I disabled all of windows firewalls; and all linuxs can reach each other shared folders. (My network is Workgroup not domain).

I have a home network with Ubuntu (3 PC) Windows (XP 3, 7 1 vista 1) and Lacie networked drive. I have successfully edited fstab to mount the lacie drive at startup on my main ubuntu PC and it works a treat. My problem is setting up the Unbutu PCs to browse the workgroup. This was working but now (since my last update of Unbutu I think) I get prompted for a password and no matter what I do it does not let me browse.
Now I have read a few things on Samba and do not have the time or ability to become a network engineer. All I want to do is is have on my Ubuntu the same browsing ability that seems to come out of the box in Windows.

My interest to be able to join my windows workgroup and be able to work with the windows shares . I am running Fedora 12 in a virtual machine as guest OS. I know I have to install Samba which does not come installed in Fedora 12. Do I need to configure samba after installation if my only interest is to work on windows shares from Fedora and not the other way around? .

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

I have managed to install ubuntu server and set it quite nicely to share my files and printers over my network. I have two printers, a Lexmark e232 and a hp C3180 multifunctional printer (i.e. printer+scaner+a copy function). I have no problem installing the Lexmark printer on my windows 7 computers on the network, however, the All in One printer only gets recognized as a printer but there is no way to get it to scan. I have been reading on the web about all in one printers but I don't quite understand what the issues are.
Is there a way for me to get the full functionality of this printer over the network? I think this wouldn't be a problem if there was some sort of software designed by hp that would allow me to add printers that are not directly connected to the computer (via usb) but are shared from another pc on the network.

I am running Fedora 12 as a Guest OS using Vmware Player. My host OS is Windows 7 Pro. I have no problems connecting to the internet with Fedora 12 using Firefox as browser. My problem is that I can't connect to my home windows network "Workgroup" I am using NAT and dhcp for IP. When I checked the network device tab it shows eth0 non active. Hardware tab shows eth1. I tried to activate eth0 by using "ifconfig eth0 up " it returns no such device. I then tried "ifconfig: and it returns eth1 and lo but eth0 was not there. Host network adapters shows 2 virtual adapters ...WMware vmnet1 and vmnet8. What should I do next?

I have a problem with a bad entry in my system-config-printer on my notebook computer which I think is interfering with my ability to print. I run fedora 10 on several systems in my house. On one desktop, I have a printer hosted which I think I have successfully setup for wireless network sharing (an HP895) using IPP.My problem seems to be a bad entry in my system-config-printer on my notebook computer which seems to stall when I try to print from applications (Firefox for example.) on the notebook. If I open up "Printing", I have 3 printers listed... one of them is for when the printer is attached directly to the notebook, one of them is the working printer description "printer" and the 3d is the bad entry. If I click on the bad entry to try to delete it, I don't have that option, but If I try to look at the "properties" for that entry, system-config-printer stalls (as do other applications when the printing dialog box starts up, and I have to force them to shut down.)
I will attach some screenshots and a copy of my /etc/cups/printers.conf file.How do I get rid of this "bad entry" in the system-config-printers GUI ? It doesn't seem to exist in the printers.conf file.

I've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

I'm trying to add a network printer. I went to Admin > printing > New...It started searching for printers, then brought up a "New Printer" box... So I expand Network Printer, and go to "windows printer via SAMBA"When I hit browse, it shows my workgroup, so I expand WORKGROUP, and it shows the PC thats sharing the printer... however, soon as I expand that PC thats sharing the printer, the WHOLE thing closes out
Printer configuration, new printer, SMB browser, all of it closes as if i killed the process or something... I can even refresh and try expanding workgroup again and it'll close out

I have set up a FTP server in my home (FileZilla) and everything works how it is supposed to. I understand that port forwarding is required and can easily set that up. My question is what IP address do I use to connect to it when I am outside of my home network. Do I use the one my ISP gave me? And how do I figure out what that is? Could my ISP be using NAT that could be messing things up for me? Could there any other configurations that I need to perform ? Also do ISP's frown upon home ftp servers? (USA)

i have 3 ubuntu machines running 9.10. All of them are running SMB so that the Windows machines can access the shares on the Ubuntu machines, but the ubuntu machines can not access shares on the Windows machines. When I click to connect to a windows machine ( all of them running XP), it says "connecting to COMPUTERNAME.." It never opens the computer, and it always comes back with an error saying that it failed to connect. I haven't been using ubuntu for very long, so im not as savvy with it as I am on windows. All windows machines can see all ubuntu shares, just not the other way around and I'd like it to be both.

I have a NAS on my network. It is password-protected. When I access it using smb://my-nas/public, it fails. I have to try it several times until I get the password prompt to bet granted access. Why doesn't it work right away? I have a gigabit connection between my PC and my NAS.

I'd like to setup a drive on my Ubuntu Server (10.04.2 LTS) so two laptops running Windows 7 can read/write to it via the local network.
Can Windows read/write to ext2/3/4, or do I need to format the drive as NTFS?
