Ubuntu Multimedia :: Totem And Flash Playback Now At Double Speed?
Oct 27, 2010
This was working a few days ago - so I'm thinking an update might be the culrpit.Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 64. ATI RV710 video card.Flash & Totem now playback at double speed. MP3 audio and Flash Videos both exhibit the same behavior. Tried a plain old reboot - no change. Looking at the diff between dynamic libaries of libflashplayer and totem shows about 45 shared libraries but that doesn't really narrow it down much..

Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

It seems to be able to play flash videos acquired from from video.google.com (ive only tried one) but NONE from ...... On other distros it will play ALL flash video from ANY source from the tmp directory perfectly fine.
Heres the original error
Search for suitable codec?
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially supported.

I'm running 64-bit Karmic with the native 64-bit Flash plugin (not the 32-bit plugin with a wrapper). Before now, I had to pick between streaming music on Gnome or streaming music from Flash. In other words, if I was listening to music in Rhythmbox or Totem, I'd have to close all those sources before playing a flash video or else the sound wouldn't work. Likewise, if I was playing a flash video and wanted to listen to music in Rhythmbox or Totem, I'd have to close Firefox from the system monitor.
So I installed the PulseAudio Device Chooser, following all the instructions in this thread. Now I can't get any sound from Flash at all, but I can play as many Rhythmbox and Totem streams as I want at the same time. In the "Playback" tab of the PulseAudio Volume Control, Flash is never acknowledged as a playback stream.

I'm getting choppy playback in flash, 32bit. It's fine until I go fullscreen. Anyone have any ideas? I was thinking of installing the 64bit version of opensuse. My experience of Flash at 64 bit on Ubuntu was very stable and choppy free. I'm running Core 2 Duo Processor with and ATI Radeon and 2 gig of ram.

when i play streaming video in any browser (tried firefox, chrome, opera, and midori), the playback is severely and unwatchably choppy. sometimes it'll be ok for a few seconds and then devolve into choppiness, but usually it's just choppy right off the bat. the audio is just fine, by the way.the odd thing is, videos works just fine, but only if i stick to 360p. anything higher yields the same results. downloaded videos work just fine as well. i've noticed this on vevo.com, cracked.com, and southparkstudios.com. (my age is showing! ) i just tested it on an html5 video from the html5 site and that worked just fine, as well, so i think this is a flash-specific problem.
right now i'm using xubuntu maverick, but i've used both lucid and maverick of xubuntu and ubuntu netbook remix (all 32-bit). i'm using a lenovo ideapad s10-2 (a netbook), and the video card is intel gma 950. i can get more specific if necessary. i've tried both the open source and non-free versions of flash (latest versions, of course) with no difference. i even tried uninstalling flash and using chrome's built-in flash plugin, also with no difference.

Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, playing videos with the default player do not work properly. I only see the content while moving the window, or in full screen mode, and in both ways, the picture is distorsioned and with strange colors. Playing it with VLC does work properly ONLY IF I change the video output module to something different as default (X11 works, openGL also) but Linux Framebuffer does not.
The question: Is there a way to change the "default" video mode that Totem (or Kaffeine) use?? I have not found anything on the net with this exact problem.

When I play H.264 / AVC videos from my new camera in totem, the sound plays fine but the video looks like a slide show. I also tried it in xine, the video plays better, but the audio does not play. (the video seems to play in slow motion. the files are saved as *.mp4, and are the same resolution as the *.mp4 files from my old camera which play fine in totem. When I look at the properties of the files, the new ones say that the codec is H.264 / AVC and the ones from my old camera say that the codec is MPEG-4 video. the frame rate is the same for both files.

when i try to play a flash video the visual works but not the audio and totem tells me i need the suitable codec which it says is gstreamer-bad and when i attempt to install it, it says that it conflicts with gstreamer-really-bad but if i remove gstreamer-really-bad and install gstreamer-bad totem gives me an internal data stream error instead and even visual won't work. so i ran totem--debug and this is the terminal output with gstreamer-bad when trying to play flash video.
** message: error: internal data stream error. gstflvdemux.c(52: gst_flv_demux_loop (): /play/decodebin0/flvdemux0: stream stopped, reason error
i also ran totem --debug with gstreamer-really-bad installed and this is the output then.

** (totem:7979): debug: registering python plugin instance: videos+totempythonplugin
** (totem:7979): debug: creating object of type videos+totempythonplugin

Totem will start to play them but claim i need gstreamer bad plugins... it will offer to install them and afterward will say "data stream error" when i try to play any. Is there a codec package that would allow me to play flash... i already tried the w64codecs package the gstreamer good bad and ugly from synaptic, and installed totem-xine to no avail.

Specs:
AMD Quad Core
8GB RAM
HD3200 ATI Graphics (onboard)
1920*1080 resolution via VGA.
Whenever I play flash video or a video in VLC the pictures seems "choppy" and slow as if it was laggy. What could be causing this? I am guessing its a video issue? Maybe something todo with refresh rates and stuff like that.

When I play a flash video in x86_64 with the latest 64bit flashplayer I will often get a grey rectangle after a few secs rather than playback. This is 100% reproducible if I restart firefox after playing a flash video and try to replay it.If I start firefox from a terminal I can see "invoke_NPP_Destroy: assertion failed:" type errors. Logging off and logging back on fixes, so I investigated which process needs to be restarted. Turns out to be gvfsd, so if you get a grey box do this in a terminal (as a normal user NOT as root)
Code:
killall gvfsd
/usr/libexec/gvfsd &
then refresh the page and all should be fine. (In fact the problem does not recur for an entire session until I login again) If others could report whether this fixes the same problem I can submit a bug report.
EDIT: I am using libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so from here

I play a flash video, and then play music natively the sound doesn't work. Or I can play flash and have sound but not play music with sound that's on my PC. Or I play my music on my PC, say one song, and the other is high pitched distorted, and rings. I have to exit the program and start it again for it to play nice. How do I resolve this most irritating bug?

Does anyone know why the write speed of usb flash would be so slow? I'm running ubuntu off my flash drive but it is running really slow. I've tested the read speed which was about 33 meg a sec. But the write speed is only about 7 meg a sec. When running ubuntu it is very slow, not tolerable at all. I've read on some sites that there is a way to fix this but I'm not finding any good tutorials on making the write speed quicker.

I have a desktop hooked up to a router and plugged into my TV. I like to run Totem and have videos running full screen on my TV. I would like to control that Totem using my laptop (connected to the same router over wifi). How would I go about doing that? I connected to my desktop using SSH and tried to send signals to Totem, but nothing worked. I tried using VNC, and that was ineffective as well.

System: Linux flashvoyager 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 07:54:58 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu 10.04 Installed onto 64gig Flash Voyager GTR plugged into Tosh satpro laptop dual core 4 gig memory. This is not a casper r/w persistent install version. This is installed directly onto the flash pen and running as if the flash drive was a solid state disc.
I have obtained a 64gig which can read at 34mb/s and write at 28mb/s. The reason I wanted this was so I could install linux ubuntu and run the OS straight of the flash as if it was a Solid state disc. I have tried using the pendrivelinux method where the persistent data is stored inside a virtual file system but I found it did not allow grub or kernel updates without the need to rebuild the entire datapen plus I did not know how to get rid of the live boot menu where it asks for language and the like.
I boot the pen straight into linux ubuntu 10.04 via the bios boot menu and select the usb pen drive. Once into grub I select the most recent kernel and then load up ubuntu. When I first started using the distro from the pen the speed of the web browsing was so slow. I have since configured the browser to store the cache inside tmpfs /media/ramdisk and browsing seems fine now however there is underlying speed issue with using the method of install. Uncompressing installs takes an age. I have configured fstab like so:
#System
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
/dev/sdb1 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
[code]....
PS: I am not allowed to use the HDD on the laptop since it is company laptop. My previous company laptop had Kubuntu 8.04 with XP as VM. Also having the install on the flash drive would give me the convenience of booting the pen from any hardware.

I am currently using fedora 12. My question is why is the speed for my yum and rpm are very slow. Something like Flash Player 10 couldn't even load after being installed. If I downloaded the rpm, the speed is like normal but if I yum it. The ESA took like >1,000,000 sec..or whatever..The point is it does seem like something has happened to my yum/rpm function. I can download and surf the web as usual. I just can't get any add-on such as the Flash Player 10. I can only use the basic already provided by Fedora.
I tried:
su -
yum clean all
rpm --rebuilddb
yum update
but I am still unsure what type of RPM issue I am facing.

Is there a possibility to use a flash drive as a speed up for conventional hard disks? I got the idea to redirect all read ops to the flash drive if the data is already stored there, and to read from the conventional disks if the data is not found there (and during idle time the freshly accessed data from the conventional disk is stored on the flash disk).
Is this already possible with linux standard tools?

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.
I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.
Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

My laptop's been locking up in Linux (Ubuntu, Backtrack, Puppy) periodically for a while now. When it locked up, it was always immune to the magic of SysRq, which I thought might indicate a hardware problem. It became so bad that I had to stop using the laptop.
Today, when I turned it on and tried to boot into Fedora 12, I got the following error (just once, it just locked up at various points during the splash screen after this once):
double fault: 0000 [#1] SMP
last sysfs file:
CPU 0
odules linked in:
Pid: 1, co m: swapper Not ta nted 2.6.32.11-99.fc 2.x86_64 #VGN-T 250N
RIP: 0010:[<ff
All the seemingly missing letters were really missing, not my typos.
As you can see, kernel version is 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 and my laptop is a Sony Vaio TZ 250N (Core 2 Duo ULV 1.2GHZ). Note that with the other remaining kernels from the updates, nothing ever happened other than the locking up. The core temperatures hover pretty high, about 55-60C peak but this is still below the critical temp. Memtest came up clean when the problem first started happening.

Whenever I'm playing a video in Totem, if I use the navigation bar thing to go to a different time in the video, the video output freezes. Audio continues, but video stops. If I pause the video first, then use the navigation thing, then click play again, it works fine. Same happens for music; the visualizer freezes if I drag the navigation thing.
Edit: If I put it on repeat, when the video or music repeats the video output freezes also.

So there's just one DVD (Narnia) that won't play on my Ubuntu machine using Totem: other DVDs play (I've installed libdvdread4 and libdvdcss2 like a good boy) and non-pulseaudio players like VLC play it properly. If I completely remove and kill pulseaudio, it plays in totem fine. It gets to the language selection screen and I select English, but as soon as any sound is involved it doesn't play. Clicking Go --> DVD menu causes Totem to hang. I don't want to be uninstalling pulseaudio, and VLC player is a bit complex for the mother.
The output of totem:
Code:
marcus@margit-laptop:~$ totem
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 4.1.3
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access
libdvdnav: DVD Title:
libdvdnav: DVD Serial Number: 43D1F9FE (GEAR):
libdvdnav: DVD Title (Alternative):
libdvdnav: Unable to find map file '/home/marcus/.dvdnav/.map' .....
marcus@margit-laptop:~$
Note that before the last line, Totem does absolutely nothing. It just sits their. Like it's trying to devour my soul or something.
