Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Blaster Arena USB Headphones Not Recognized And Lock Up?
Apr 15, 2011
So I have this nice headset. It's a Sound Blaster Arena. It plugs in via USB.
So when I plug it in, it isn't recognized. Then Ubuntu locks up after 20 seconds.
I am using 10.04 LTS
What should I do??

I found out there is no way to install headset's own drivers. At least I am looking for a way to switch its 5.1 property on. Is there any way for it on ubuntu 10.04 with pulse or whatever works?

I've recently installed Linux Mint 8 64-bit on my computer and getting my sound card to work. I've been searching around the internet for solutions but I know next to nothing about computer audio.
My sound card is a PCI Express Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. Came with my computer. Told it uses the SB Audigy chipset. Using the onboard audio is not an option. The card shows up in Sound Preferences under the Hardware tab, but I cannot get sound from it. Here's what they told me to do:
Install the karmic alsa backports through the Terminal Install hidden Level 5 updates to update the kernel
Disable every audio device except the SB card (the others are onboard and HDMI) Check volume levels in alsamixer, PulseAudio Device Chooser and Volume Control I also tried to install the OpenAudio driver (not sure, will double check), which crashed Linux every time I try to activate it.

Does anybody know if it's possible to get the volume control knob (the one on the device) on the USB Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi device in Ubuntu 10.4? The sound is working great for me, but I actually bought it mostly for the volume so I'm hoping there's a way to fix it before I return it.

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few months now (after about a 5 year hiatus from all things Linux) and when I first booted up, everything worked perfectly out of the box except audio. I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 sound card, and after searching the forums I used [URL] to successfully get my audio working.
Now, I'd like to try Kubuntu. Like Ubuntu, when I use the live CD everything but audio works. However, I can't install gnome-alsamixer like I did to fix the sound under Ubuntu (of course, I may not have had all the repositories enabled, I didn't think of this until later). Also, KMix didn't seem to offer an option that worked.

I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

I have installed the Ubuntu 10.04 on a HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep laptop and I can't get sound on my headphones when I plug them. Besides the laptop speakers don't shutdown either - like it happened with the same OS on my Toshiba Tecra M4."aplay -l" lists my card properly and nothing is muted on "alsamixer". It states that my card is a HDA Intel with chipset Nvidia MCP78 HDMI.

I can't use my headphone jack.
The laptops speakers work fine (in fact they're clearer and stronger than ever), but I can't use audio equipment that I plug into the audio jack (headphones, speakers, ect.).
I checked System/Sound, looked into the Output tab, and found that there are two devices for sound output displayed: Internal Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI, cause my laptop has an HDMI port), and Internal Audio Analog Speaker (default sound output). No "Headphones" or "3.5mm Jack" or something like that. Even when I have something plugged in the jack.
So when I plug in my headphones, no sound comes from them, and the laptop speakers are still playing. It's like Ubuntu doesn't detect anything plugged into the audio jack at all.
I own an Acer Aspire One 522.

Alien Arena is seriously awesome in the latest incarnation. Unfortunately sound was disabled after the upgrade. Running from terminal provides the following information:
------- sound initialization -------
dlopen() on libopenal.so.1 failed
Sound failed: Unable to start OpenAL.
Game will continue without sound.
That error message is actually quite good - the first line is the technical problem, the second is what it means, and the last is the result of the problem. Errors involving a "lib" usually mean the lib is not installed (or broken). OpenAL is a sophisticated free software audio API. Using this system is A Good Thing. A quick check in synaptic shows that the libraries are not installed.

I'm having an issue with my computer and the headphones. When I plug in the headphones into the headphone jack, the sound plays through the headphones but it also plays through the speakers as well at the same time. I've attempted to play around with the sound settings to see if I can get this issue resolved but I have not been able too. Computer specifications are in my signature.

I have Ubuntu 9.10. Clean install. I have a cheap headset but can't get sound to come thru the headset. The mic works, but sound only comes from main speakers.
I do not have a HP, SONY or anything like that. I bought my pc barebones and built myself. So there doesn't seem to be any easy fix for my pc. Here are the specs:

After updating my kernel my sound stopped working. I followed the sound problems guide in the sticky thread at the top of this forum and I've now got it to the point where I get sound through the headphones but not through the laptop speakers. Here is my sound info (output from alsa-info.sh thingy). I've added various lines to the end of my alsa-base.conf but no luck.

i'm new to ubuntu, this is the second time i've installed it (i had enough of xp). with careful planning and thinking, i managed to get a few things working, like high resolution, java plugin, and flash. but there's a problem i encountered during listening to music: my headphone has only sound in the left speaker. i took a glance at system>preferences>sound, and i tried a couple options, but nothing worked.
some generic information:
- i have an integrated sound card (into an abit kd7 motherboard).
- my headphone is a thomson wpd265, which is working perfectly.
- neither videos, nor .flac audio plays in stereo.
i tried to google the problem, but this thing seems to be a bit rare. i'm sure this problem is related to software, since everything went fine under different circumstances (xp). it turns out that neither the speaker system is working - only the front left works from the five, and 5.1 output laggs.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. I had recent problems with my on board sound card, so I decided to stick a Sound Blaster Live (SB0060) on my home theater PC. Sounds, great I hooked up the coaxial cable to my Sony Amp, and movies play in 5.1 DTS glorious sound.
PROBLEM: Occasionally I get this weird sound loop were the sound repeats continuously until I either mute the PC, or play another sound. if I do the "Speaker Test" in the Sound preference a few times, it will eventually be caught in a loop as well.
This only happens while the sound card is passing PCM (stereo 48Khz) sound to my amplifier. It does not happen in AC3 or DTS passthrough. I've looked in the forum and in google andhave not found a solution. Any suggestions as to what can be causing this?

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3/KDE4 and now I have no sound from the headphone jack. I checked Kmix and everything is fine.I do remember that in OpenSUSE 11.2 I had this similar problem which I solved by switching ON/OFF the "Independent HP" option in Kmix. The problem with 11.3 is that this option is not available in Kmix.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10. My sound works fine unless I have headphones plugged in. I've tried 2 sets of headphones, and it doesn't work with either set, so it's not the headphones. The volume is not muted (it's at 100%) for the headphones either in alsamixer. How can I diagnose and fix this?

I have a set of i.Tech BluePro headphones and a Motorola USB adapter, my aim is to listen to music from my laptop through the headphones. I have successfully set up the bluetooth device with the Bluetooth preferences utility, it is detected and paired but how do I get the computer to direct its sound to this device? the sound preferences do not list my bluetooth device. The only reference to this task I have come across is here; [URL] not sure if this is relevant for 10.10, but when I try hcitool scan. Nothing is detected.

I'm running WinXP Pro on a Dell XPS 710 with a Creative X-Fi sound card. Been away from Linux for a year or so since I got this machine and would like to come back. Can you suggest/recommend a sound card (5.1 preferred) that has a high success rate with the Linux OS. I will probably install Open Suse or Kubuntu. I'm more than willing to dump the high end sound card for less flash.

I've installed Skype on my Debian Lenny AMD64 system using method describe in [URL] . I also installed pulseaudio using aptitude, but not sure that this required.
I can sign in to Skyp, call out to my local phone number; phone rings. But I have no sound through my Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB headset and no sound is heard on the phone.
If I click on Applications/sound & video/pulseaudio volume control, I get:
Connection failed: Connection refused
1) Am I missing a configuration step? If so what do I need to do where?
2) If not configuration, is there another issue that needs to be resolved? What? Where?
3) Why do I see Connection refused when I clike on pulseaudio volume control?
Note: I tried to listen to npr, but no sound there either.
