Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lucid - 0install VLC 1.1.7 On 10.04?
Feb 3, 2011
I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04) x86-64 on my laptop (Core2Duo, Intel 4 Series graphics). I want to upgrade from the default version of VLC (1.0.6) to the latest (1.1.7). I added the n-muench and ferramroberto PPAs to my software sources, but Ubuntu's update manager is not showing any VLC updates available.I also added the 'official' VLC PPA (lucid-bleed) but it is only showing v1.1.5, not the latest version. how to update VLC on my x64 Lucid install?

Well I have this really shweet Samson C01U usb studio condenser mic. When it is plugged in before I boot my machine, everything works like a charm, and I can sound like a rockstar recording my stuffs in UbuntuStudio 10.04 x64.But when I'm not being a rockstar, I'm using my normal Lucid distro to go about my everyday tasks. So when I decide to call someone on skype, I plug the mic in, and nothing happens. The sound config window does not show the device? I do not want to reboot every time to use the mic (and that's all that works), and I do not want to leave it standing on my desk either.

At some point i probably messed up my sound configuration, and now i cant record anymore.
What works : * I have pulseaudio, i can play sound from several apps simultaneously, eg : mpd + vlc + firefox + skype
Remarks :
* pulse-audio is as system-wide installed.
* I have installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-26-generic
* I have 1 internal sound card (on the main board) + 1 ATI graphic card with HDMI output (and thus a sound chip)
* I have 2 output-plugs (1 normal + 1 headphone)
* I have 3 inputs (2 microphones + 1 line in)
* In the past, i installed a PCI sound card, for testing. It may remains old configuration files related to it.
THE PROBLEMS :
* I can not record. In the Pulse-applet / Volume control, in the tab "recording", in the tab "input device" (i translate from french), i can choose between mic1, mic2 and line in, but none of them has any effect on the volume meter.
* In the the tab "configuration", there is no sound card listed, just the message "no car available for configuration" ... that might show that smthg is wrong ! Notice that in the past (but still under lucid), it used to work. There was here all the cards (internal + HDMI video card) listed.
Output of alsa-info.sh :
Code:
upload=true&script=true&cardinfo=

Have to say I am loving the new Ubuntu (Lucid), however I have the same problem I do every time I upgrade and that is the maximize/minimize delay in Firefox or any open window for that matter. In the past I have installed a deb file called xserver-nobackfill and it fixes the problem, but I cannot find one for Lucid. I try an older version and it tells me a newer version is already installed. I know Lucid just came out yesterday, but I wondered if someone knew where to look, or something to try

SMplayer has a vdpau option, turn it on, and it stops playing video. XV works just fine, but vdpau uses a lot less processor.

Why do this? Two reasons:
1) Many of us use JACK for low-latency audio work, but it's annoying to have to turn it on or off to have to allow regular Ubuntu applications to work. It's even more annoying that both can't normally work together -- either JACK or PulseAudio must take control of the sound control. This method allow JACK to do, and PulseAudio just routes to JACK.
2) JACK is kinda super awesome. By routing PulseAudio through it, your regular Ubuntu sound application suddenly get super powers. Pretty easy to do! (Well, we count our blessings in Linux...)
1. DYNAMICALLY You need the PulseAudio utilities and JACK sink:
Code:
sudo aptitude install pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-module-jack And then run this to get PulseAudio connected to JACK: Code:pactl load-module module-jack-sink pactl load-module module-jack-source Now, go to Ubuntu's sound preferences, and you'll see "Jack sink" in the output tab. If you use JACK Control, you can create a script for the above and have it set up in "Execute script after Startup". Then, PulseAudio will automatically load the JACK sink when you start JACK.
2. BY DEFAULT Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa, and add these lines:
Code:load-module module-jack-source load-module module-jack-sink You can test it without rebooting by restarting PulseAudio. In Ubuntu, PulseAudio is started in the user session, not as a system daemon. To restart it:
Code:
pulseaudio --kill
pulseaudio --start

How do I capture video from my JVC GR-DF470 MiniDV camera into 10.04 Lucid.PiViTi looks good for an editing app, and I've installed OpenShot as well, but neither have a way of capturing the video from a camera. I used Kino previously in 8.04 Hardy, but it was buggy at best in 9.10 Karmic; I've just installed it in 10.04, but capture keeps stopping after 2 or 3 seconds. I also tried kdenlive, but the audio capture has a lot of 'noise' that is louder than the voices on the tape, and once it finishes capturing video, it doesn't display a 'Save' dialogue as it is supposed to - so that wasn't very successful either.So what can I use to capture video from a MiniDV Camera via Firewire.

Is There A Way Yet To Fix The Black All The Way Aroung The Screen With HDMI.Its Really Just A Digital Issue I Think!.It Works Through VGA Fine But The Audio Xtra Wire Thing Is A Drag.It Would Be Nice To Get Catalyst Working ( The Overscan Underscan Tab Like Windows) But Xorg.conf Would Be OK I Guess.

This started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.
I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.

I upgraded to Lucid Lynx from Karmic and now, when I try to play music in gmusicbrowser, the volume is so low that its hardly audible. In Exaile, there is no such issue. Deleted the .gmusicbrowser folder in home directory and tried to no avail.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a PC with the integrated Radeon X200 card. Currently, I have the free Radeon drivers, but they're either awful or aren't working properly. I get some wonky graphics errors, and any 3D game crashes as soon as the 3D graphics are to be displayed.
My card is no longer supported by fglrx. What can I do?

When I put a blank rewritable media in the drive no icon appears on the desktop and if I try to burn an iso image, for example, with the option that the right finds no brasero asks to insert media and some in the unit. Another problem is that brasero leaves the locked drawer of the unit for a few minutes after erase dvd-rw media. Is there any solution to these two problems?

I would like to set xine as my default player for DVD playback and cannot figure out how. I have read other posts that state to right click on file>properties>open with but do not seem to have the open with option when right clicking a dvd that is in my dvd drive. I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.

I did a clean install of Lucid, and almost everything video related is a little sluggish. First of all, Compiz is really slow compared to how it was in Karmic.
I don't even use window animations, just the Scale and a couple other effects, like desktop cube. Scale is really slow, and sometimes it doesn't work. I have to start compiz again to get it working. Desktop cube actually froze a couple of times half way through a rotation. Rotating the cube is much slower as well.
Also, I've been having a lot of trouble with HD video playback. It's not just the 100% CPU load that's bugging me, but every 3-4 minutes the playback skips frames, and the image becomes all glitchy.
Flash playback also uses a lot of CPU, I can't even watch ..... videos in fullscreen most of the time. And I'm always opting for the lowest quality possible btw.
I have a dual core AMD CPU and 8600GT nvidia graphics card, so it's not a hardware issue.

I was having a terrible time playing some WMV files and I finally got it working this way:
Based on this: [URL]
Step 1 Add the Medibuntu repositories to sources
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
by adding this at the bottom of the file then saving
Code:
#medibuntu repositories
deb [URL] lucid free non-free
Step 2 Update for that change to take effect
Code:
sudo apt-get update
Step 3 Install the w32codecs [you won't find it if Medibuntu repositories are not in place]
Code:
sudo apt-get install w32codecs
Step 4 Install Kplayer [so far the only player I can get to work for WMV files]
Code:
sudo apt-get install kplayer

I have used automated DVD-RAM-discs for backup at work a lot and I think they are perfect for that task.
At home I'm using Ubuntu Lucid exclusively and I haven't been able yet to use DVD-Ram media in any userfriendly fashion yet. The only documentaion I found seems to be very much out of date.

I have used VLC player in the past to play music under certain conditions, but am having a bit of a problem. I have Googled this problem to no avail. Nowhere in the menus can I find a way to load a playlist. This playlist was generated under and saved from VLC. When consulting the documentation at the website, it says to load the playlist from the "Playlist" menu, but there is no "Playlist" menu present, as shown in the screenshots from the site. I can find the "Save Playlist to File" option under the "Media" menu, but nowhere can I find a "Load Playlist" option. I have read that the playlist can be dragged and dropped (specifically, directly onto the player), but VLC won't play the playlist. How to load a playlist into VLC?

I've recently built a half-new computer and installed Lucid Lynx on it.I managed to get everything else working and even got the ATI drivers installed. However, I can't get above 60 Hz on my old CRT monitor - the ATI driver controls have 60 as the highest selectable refresh rate. The preferred 1152x864 screenmode works fine otherwise.
Here are the known specifications:
Monitor horizontal refresh: 30-86 kHz
Monitor vertical refresh: 50-150 Hz
Known working display mode on earlier graphics card: 1152x864, 85 Hz.
My motherboard (with integrated graphics) is the Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AMD 880G AM3. The GPU is Radeon HD 4250.The ATI drivers seem to have "taken over" the xorg.conf, so I don't know where to input any values.

I used to listen music and watch films with my with my laptop but, after an upgrade (to 10.04 lucid) it is impossible to hear any sounds. The sound card is detected and it works since making the laptop boot from live CD (of ubuntu 10.10) I get sounds without problems. I tried to reinstall alsa-base and alsa-utils with no results. Everything looks OK, but the sound! (It's not muted!)

I just installed Ubuntu Lucid beta 2 on my desktop, and I can't seem to get the sound to work. I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 card and the motherboard has built-in sound, but ubuntu doesn't recognize either of them. The only hardware option I have in my sound preferences is for SPDIF, and thats the only thing that shows up in alsamixer as well.

I just installed 10.04 and am pleased w/ things, for the most part.
However, I cannot get a DVD disc to play (a movie, for instance) or be recognized unless I shut down the system and restart (provided I have already launched a Web video, or something). The DVD-ROM is dead to the world as far as disc recognition goes.
Things were just great in Karmic so this is completely confusing to me.
Does anyone have a fix?

I've been having problems with the Songbird client that we normally download from repositories. It is slow, unstable, and crashes a lot. So I finally figured out that if you download the latest developer version, it is fast, stable, and hasnt crashed yet! The only downside is not all plugins are compatible, but it is still awesome to use, its my favorite audio player in Ubuntu. [URL]
