Ubuntu :: Microsoft Playing Tricks - Mobile Broadb And In New Zealand?
Mar 7, 2010
I have Ubuntu 9.10, and it already contained Telecom New Zealand Mobile Broadband option in its Connection Manager. I installed the Ubuntu into my computer as a dual-boot with Windows Vista also in the same hard disk. Everything worked perfectly, I could connect to the internet very easily.
Then I booted to Windows Vista. After that, when I booted back to Ubuntu a Telecom Modem icon appeared in the desktop. I click it but nothing happens, the file autorun.exe is there, but it cannot be run. The Ubuntu Network Connection Manager that earlier recognised the modem and offered a Mobile Broadband option to connect now does not have this option available at all.The connection works perfectly, I already used it, but now I cannot utilise it because that Telecom Modem logo appeared in the desktop.
What on earth happened? This, in my mind at least, is connected to the fact that I went to boot to Vista. Needless to say very frustrating. it would be greatly appreciated as I was already so happy with everything running so smoothly. I love this OS, it immediately feels very comfortable to use.
There is a feature in MS Windows OS that allows users to play the songs on their mobile on the computer via bluetooth, i.e., the users can use the computer speakers as a bluetooth headset. Are there any ways or any software to do the same in GNU/Linux?
I have spent the last few days setting up SeaMonkey and I've finally got it just the way I like it, and I thought I might share a few tricks I found scattered around the net.
Add-ons: Ad-block (self explanatory) No-script (self explanatory) Mouse Gestures (set up similar to Opera's mouse gestures) Compact Menu - Free up screen real estate with a single menu button. Lightning v1.0b1 - Calender Extension. (Version 1.0b2 doesn't support SM) Theme- Using Mostly Crystal Tricks- Home Button Hack - Add a improvised home button Speed Dial Hack - Create your own Speed-Dial functionality I also found it helpful to set the location bar to NOT append www. or .com to text entered into the search bar. (Preferences -> Location Bar -> Untick)
Not sure if this is terribly helpful to anyone but SeaMonkey now behaves (IMHO) a lot nicer and looks great. [PhotoBucket]
Are there any tricks/sites/methods to use the linux man command in a more convenient way? I love commands in terminal but for some strange reason I preferred to type man in firefox then in the terminal. The output is so long and I have to scroll forever to find what I need. Also the lack of example is a headache.
I have looked around a while for the answer, but nothing really fits. Here is the scenario. I have one server and a few openvz VE's running. I want to be able to auth whatever possible with LDAP. I have an LDAP server setup on the host and auth works for the server users. The tricky part for me is that every VE has their own domain. and if I can do that, they will also have the same login for their VE on said domain. I can setup users and the required software on the hosts and guest, but I guess I am confused at how to manage the multiple domain part of things.
not sure if proftp can do 'name based' stuff like apache, but if it can, we can point ftp.clientdomain.foo to the main server and handle it that way.
i am using samsung S3310 with aircel when i am connecting new mobile broadband connection my device is not identifying ,so that i cant connect Internet.but everything okay i mean settings in mobile and pc. for same connection i used Nokia mobile its identified and Internet was connected but samsung mobile is not identifying in terminal i typed LSUSB my device is shown in that.
I just want to tell everyone how good the Garmin/Asus A10 mobile phone is as an internet modem.I am in Australia and Mobile internet is an expensive thing to have. cheapest is dodo but i had a few problems trying out a friends usb modem.Anyway i was in the market for a Gps phone and discover this one. it is Android phone and pretty cheap so far it is very good gps, camera, mp3, and phone is excellent.BUT here is the clincher. when you plug it into the computer, the phone screen lights up and gives you 3 options.
Create Ubuntu inside Virtualbox (done) Join it to the domain using net ads join -S example.com -u admin (done) Update the DNS using net ads dns register (done) Be able to visit the netbios name as defined in smb.conf (lets call it Bob). [Not done]
The problem I am having is that it looks like, even though the machine is now on the AD, and I can browse users in the AD, etc... My network configuration (IP/route tables, etc) are not correct.
For example, my AD server is in the 172 IP range, while BOB is sitting at 10.0.2.15.
The DNS server stores Bob's value as 10.0.2.15, so when I ping it from my workstation at 172, I end up getting no response (obviously it's on a different net).
Bob's route table is configured to deal with 10... range of IP, rather than 172.
I have attempted doing commands such as ifconfig eht0 172.16.1.118 netmask 255.255.255.0 and even editing the route tables, but that then makes outbound network traffic imposable.
I have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on my machine. I use Ubuntu much more often than Windows 7. On Ubuntu I can use LibreOffice Calc, but I'm more used to Microsoft Excel and would like to be able to run it under Ubuntu.
i dont like microsoft. I refuse to support them or give them market share in any way. I get tired of going to a website just to have microsoft linked in it somehow, such as having a bing map display on the page. Is there a way to configure Privoxy to completely block all microsoft related crap? A list or range of IP's that could be blocked? If so, anyone know where I can get a list of microsoft ip's to block?
I have these two ports open for some reason. netstat says they're attached to 'smbd', but when I look at packages installed and search for smbd the only thing that comes up is samba4 which is NOT installed.
I'm guessing some other package installed this as a dependency. Is there anyway to find out what it was and remove it?
I am a recent switcher, and I was following some other website's post on how to install Microsoft Offcie (im sorry all OO users but I find Office more intuitive). I downloaded the PlayonLinux Windows Emulator (i guess you could call it that) and then tried to install office. Previously, office came preinstalled with my windows machine when i bought it, so I never got a cd but for the installation with PlayonLinux it requests a cd. Does anyone know any workarounds to this? Also, I am not trying to get a keygen or anything illegal, as I have a working copy of MS 07 running on the Vista partition of my laptop.
I got windows 7 32-bit on my laptop (While having kubuntu 9.10) and I've been using microsoft virtual pc for 2 years now and I got 7 on my desktop and it runs like it did back in vista but why can't i run it inside 7 on my laptop?
It didn't work before on my desktop but eventually did
I tried windows virtual pc but neither of my computer will run it!!
every time i click it it says this program is blocked due to compatibility issues
According to the compatibility center from microsoft, it say it's compatible and requires no action.
see for yourself: [URL]
PS: I use virtual pc to run windows 3.1, 95 and 98
how to synchronize Microsoft Outlook with whatever office app of LINUX? What are the office solutions that are offered by linux or what can we compile?I have some CSV files from outlook but it is annoying to daily try to export those. How to synchronize the ubuntu machine, with for instance ethernet
I tried to install Microsoft Office 2007, but I get a program error "This program has encountered a serious problem and needs to close". Here is the wine log:
Code: fixme:ole:NdrCorrelationFree (0x18b9504): stub fixme:ole:NdrCorrelationInitialize (0x18b9504, 0x18b9104, 1024, 0x0): stub fixme:rpc:NdrStubCall2 new correlation description not implemented fixme:rpc:RpcImpersonateClient ((nil)): stub
I tried looking for it in the Software Center but it doesnt have the install button. It used to work just smoothly in the previous versions of ubuntu. Do i need to download anything before installing it? I need it for compatibility with MS Office
I have a dual-booting PC.With Microsoft windows 7 and Ubuntu.Windows starts as it is supposed to!But when I choose Ubuntu in the first boot menu.(This contains Windows 7 and Ubuntu)Which directs to Grub 2 from Ubuntu. When I boot, it says: (loading) New Partition ???And then nothing happens???

I plugged my Microsoft VX5000 Lifecam into my Ubuntu 10.10 system and expected it to fire up and work like a charm. Well I had high hopes for the new year but I see it's not going to be easy. I tried to use Skype and Camorama. It just does not see the web cam. When I plug it in, I see the little blue light come on for a second then go off.
[URL] The problem is that this font detector only works on Microsoft, and one of them also works on Mac OS What I mean is: is there a program where I can copy/paste any text or any word and it detects the font and tells me whether it's what I think it is or not? i.e. Times New Roman, Courier New, Ubuntu, Comic Sans MS...etc
If you're wondering what I need this for, well at the moment I just had an issue where I'm trying to do exactly what some Python tutorial is telling me to do but one of the letters ("l"). It's a small "L" and it's curvy at the bottom, but I just can't find it anywhere (Comic Sans MS has it but it's dark and bold). I either find strait vertical small "L"'s or small "L"'s that look similar to number 1 Obviously I would need this simple feature in the future and this isn't the only reason, because I gotta admit...it is pathetic if I only need it to copy exactly what a tutorial's font looks like.
I've read a number of posts [URL].. that state that the Microsoft fonts, formerly msttcorefonts, but now (supposedly) called ttf-mscorefonts-installer should be available in Synaptic Package Manager.
Neither is present in mine- I am running Lucid Lynx 10.04 and I have both font multiverse and universe enabled; althoguh, the wiki link says I should see hundreds, but I only see about 30 total in all 3 font repositories. So I then tried apt-get tff-mscorefonts-installer and I got the following error: E: Invalid operation ttf-mscorefonts-installer
What gives? Is this package no longer available? Should I be looking in some repository other than Font?
ran an update on by Ubuntu 10.10 laptop. Imagine my surprise with a Microsoft EULA popped up for something called Microsoft TTFCoreFonts.I declined. I already have sufficient fonts.
how well does Microsoft Office 2007 work under WINE? My mother is a school teacher for younger children, so she really only needs Microsoft Office 2007 and a browser. For the life of me, I've never met anyone that gets more viruses and problems with her computer. So I'm wondering if I can switch her over to Linux and use Microsoft Office 2007 in WINE. OpenOffice isn't a possibility, I'm already pushing it asking her to learn how to use Linux. (I know it isn't hard, I use it myself, but she will fight to the death about using Microsoft Office) So how's Office in WINE?
I have Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit dual boot with Windows 7. On Windows 7 i have microsoft security essentials for antivirus/antispyware. Recently I noticed GRUB boot failures after having booted to windows but couldn't see why. Just to be clear, I am using GRUB2. Anyway, the failure is as follows:
PC is powered on, goes on towards displaying GRUB menu but it only shows GRUB Loading and restarts, so the list doesn't show.and the restart keeps happening. Now the workaround so far is to boot using a live cd and fix GRUB according to the instructions posted here:
https:[url]....And after fixing GRUB2, i either have to boot into the desktop or recovery mode, to update GRUB2 menu once again using
Code: update-grub command and then everything works.
Now coming to what i think is the cause of the problem. Everytime MSE (microsoft security essentials) is updated be it standalone, or over internet, including failed updates, the boot failure happens.I've googled microsoft and ubuntu forums but couldn't find a fix.
I was checking out wine and installed ms office 2007 in it. But I ended up deciding (for the Windows programs that I needed to use, and the context in which I need them) to just install XP in a VirtualBox machine and use all my Windows programs there (not very many). So, I uninstalled wine and I did all of this that is recommended in the wine faq (to completely remove everything):
However, I now have an annoying issue. Microsoft office programs are the default opener of office documents. And since the programs no longer exist, this causes a problem. How can I remove the option to "Open With Microsoft Office ..." so that OpenOffice is the default?
