Ubuntu :: MSI 845E MAX Fakeraid W/ No Raid Bios?

I have an MSI 845E Max Motherboard. I just purchased the computer USED. I have no manual and from all accounts of the online manual, this MB is doing the impossible.Connected to this MB are 2 WD 60GB hard drives. Bother are recognized in the bios. When booting from the live CD, and running the disk utility I can plainly see that there are the 2 drives and one striped array (using both of those drives).There is no settings in BIOS for any array. If I remove 1 of the drives, the disk utility sees only 1 drive but still sees an array. I can find no way to eliminate, recreate, oe manipulate this array in any way.To make matters worse, I attempted to install an older FREEBSD, using it it saw both drives (no raid). Using their Disk utility I re-partitioned both drives and continued the install. Unfortunately the version I had was an older one and it could not complete the FTP install (And I would rather have Ubuntu anyways). Though through this action I believe that I have destroyed the integetery of the raid and if it is to be used it needs to be fixed.So.. how do I fix something that my BIOS is not supposed to be capable of doing? About a year ago I bought a new compy and decided to get on-motherboard RAID, and by golly I was gonna use it, even if it wasn't worth it.
Well, after one year, two upgrades, a lot of random problems dealing with RAID support, and a lot of articles read, I have come to my senses.
The problem: I have a fakeraid using dmraid, RAID 1, two SATA harddrives. They are mirrors of eachother, including separate home and root partitions. I actually found the method I think I had used here: [URL]
The ideal solution: No need to reinstall, no need of another drive, no need to format.
My last resort: Buy a drive, copy my home directory, start from scratch, copy my stuff over.
PS: if it matters, I'm on 64 bit 10.04 LTS

I had Ubuntu 8.04 installed on server#1 and moved it to server#2. Everything works fine, including the changing of eth2/3 back to eth0/1. I was wondering if it's possible to use the nvidia onboard raid and make a raid 1 with this OS not getting wiped out. It's a bios level cheesy raid and it warns that it's erasing the data (which is didn't erase), but wont boot anyway. I'm assuming it's probably best to just create a software raid in the working OS with a fresh 2nd drive.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts server on my Intel "fakeraid" (software raid) (2x250 sata).To test my RAID 1 I turned off one HD and start the system.The first screen (Intel software screen) show Status = Degraded, but the system starts normally with just one HD.Then I turned off the system and turned on the HD again, so the first screen (Intel software screen) shows Status = Rebuild. If I enter in the software raid panel the folowing message is showed: "Volumes with "Rebuild" status will be rebuilt within the operating system"The system starts normally... but this message status stays permanently even I restart the system again

I've played with Ubuntu, and a linux evangelist at work has talked me into trying it again.I happened to be wiping my machine, so my plan was to have Windows 7 and Ubuntu on one hard drive (100GB for Ubuntu, the rest for Windows), and the second hard drive for downloads, TV, films, etc.First I installed Windows, then I torrented the x64 Ubuntu 10.04 live CD iso, and burned it to a DVD. I booted from it and installed on the second partition, but I then found when I booted back into windows that my second hard drive wasn't there any more.
It didnt take long to work out that Ubuntu had installed using the second hard drive as a mirror. This is very confusing to me, as I've disabled RAID in my BIOS. I booted from the Ubuntu CD again and looked for options about this but didn't find any. Eventually out of frustration I just unplugged the second hard drive, but now when I boot from the CD to install, no hard drives show up for me to install to.

2 HD WD 320 put into RAID 0.
To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?

As I understand, Fedora 12 sets up Intel ICH (when set in BIOS) as mdraid instead of dmraid.I would like to setup my 2 SATA hard drives so ultimately my /boot partition is RAID1, my / (ROOT) partition is RAID 1, and my swap is either RAID0, or fstab referencing 2 partitions on 2 of the drives, both set with pri=0 (which supposedly is equivalent to striping of RAID0, performance wise).
Assuming Fedora 12 uses mdraid for my configuration in either instance, am I better of enabling, or disabling the RAID mode in the BIOS? This system is strictly Fedora--no dual booting, no Windows. Any performance gains; reliability benefits between either scenario?It's a Intel P35 motherboard with ICH9R. Storage configuration is either "AHCI" or "RAID"
I ran into some strange issues with dropping drives with the RAID set on in BIOS. When it was set, that gave me two md devices of md126 (RAID0, swap) and 127 (RAID1 split between / and /boot). I think I had md126p1 for the SWAP, and md127p1 for /boot and md127p2 for / Within purely software, i have:
/dev/sda1 RAID
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 RAID

I suppose unless the BIOS enabled RAID is supposed to be faster, I'll stick with a purely software route and keep the BIOS set to AHCI.

I'm helping my brother setup a server he has. The server has a 3Ware 9690SA Hardware RAID card, and it has 4 x 2Tb 5400 RPM Samsung Harddrives. When I boot into the 3Ware BIOS, it recognizes all 4 drives, no problem. What he wants to do is install them in RAID 10 for a 4 Tb mirrored volume for performance and redundancy. When I try to create a RAID array with the 4 drives, and set it to use RAID 10, it only allows me to utilize 2079 Gb (1/4 x 8 Tb), which is half of what I would expect for this RAID config.
Assuming I go ahead and allow it to build the array with this volume, we can go on to install Fedora 14 with no issue, but still only 2 Tb are available. This is our first time setting up a RAID array like this, I've also tried enabling Auto-carving to insure that I have support for physical volumes larger than 2 Tb, but to no avail. With the version of Linux we're running, and the RAID card he's got, it should support greater than 2 Tb PVs either way though.

I changed something in the BIOS which causes a kernel panic, if my card is installed (Ultra ATA/133 PCI-to-ATA Host Controller). I had it working fine til a month ago, when I installed some Linux on a HD on that card. That booted fine too, and I did some disk switching. Still all was well, but yesterday I tried to boot XP (2nd IDE master)(GRUB is Ubuntu/2nd IDE slave), and XP wouldn't load. I clicked here, and clicked there, and now XP and Ubuntu boot, ONLY if the RAIDbus card is Out. Put the card in, and I get a kernel panic/lockup. This HAS to be a BIOS function - nothing is different on the disks, including GRUB menu.

I'm attempting to install F13 on a server that has a 2-disk RAID setup in the BIOS. When I get to the screen where I select what drive to install on, there are no drives listed. The hard drives were completely formatted before starting the 13 installation. Do I need to put something on them before Fedora will install?

I'm trying to install Debian Lenny on my new Dell XPS 8100 Desktop with 2 x 1To SATA HD. (No Windows or any other OS install is present on the system) The Bios allows me to change the SATA mode to either "ATA" or "RAID"
- When SATA mode is set to RAID, the installation goes without issues, but when it comes to load into the system, I've got that Stage 1.5 Grub Loading... Error 2 problem. I assume this is due to the Bios "RAID" configuration. I then switched the SATA mode to "ATA" in the Bios and now I can see the menu that allows me to boot my debian install but that part actually fails too saying "ALERT /dev/sda1 does not exist"
- When SATA mode was set to ATA, I tried to re-install the system but this time my drive was not recognized by the installer: "No common CD ROM drive"

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:

I am unable to mount my fakeRAID, raid 0 array in ubuntu 10.04.
My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H with BIOS version F4b. code...
It's the two 1 TB samsung hard drives that is in the raid 0 array.
Why am i unable to mount the 1.8 TB ntfs partition?

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit) as a dual-boot setup (along with Win 7) on my desktop. I can't emphasize how much faster Ubuntu loads when compared with Windows. There is only one problem though, I cannot figure out how to use my existing FakeRaid array (two 2TB hdds setup as RAID 1 - mirroring) to work with Ubuntu. I am NOT trying to install Ubuntu onto a raid array (I have Win 7 mounted on a separate boot drive , 4 hdds altogether, two for each OS and two for the RAID array). The raid array works fine in Windows and it's an Intel Raid Controller. How can I do the same for Ubuntu without losing any data? Is this possible?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 server on and old pc to use it as a backup server for my and my kids pc's.The pc I use for the Ubuntu server has two sata disks on a fasttrak 378 controller, fakeraid as I have learned, and a single pata disk. I have installed ubuntu on the single pata disk and was planing to use the fakeraid as the samba share.

I got gigabyte chipset with an raid support. Currently I have 2 hdd's running in raid 1. When I was first installing ubuntu 11.04 server my fakeraid was detected, and I assigned a name for it in the initial installer and it was auto-mounted (working 100%) ever since.
However I was forced to reinstall my ubuntu server, and this part was somehow skipped in the installer.
HDD can still be seen in /dev/mapper

My motherboard has a BIOS feature to support RAID1 for two disks. I know it's FakeRAID but that's what Windows can work with. I've read that Linux's built in softraid mdadm is better so I'd prefer to use that for Linux's own filesystems. Can I enable FakeRAID in the BIOS without it affecting Linux in any way? Is it possible for Ubuntu to read and/or write to the NTFS partition that's raided with the fakeraid?
Also, if running mdadm in RAID 1 how much risk is there of losing data if the computer crashes? Is e2fsck able to repair a filesystem on a RAID 1 setup?

I wanted to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my pc (dual boot with windows xp which is already installed on one disk).
I have a Asus P5K pro (motherboard) which has a integrated raid controller and i have two 500 GB hard disks.
On BIOS raid is disabled. On Windows i see 2 different disks (correctly)..
When i try to install Ubuntu, on the disk/partition stagei only see /dev/mapper/xxxxxx which should be the raid (i could be wrong). I tried booting inserting the nodmraid option but if i do i cannot see any disk.
what can i do to solve this?

I'm using Ubuntu Server 11.04
I have a HP Microserver which uses what I thought was a hardware RAID. It now turns out that it is fakeRAID.
I'm moving from Windows 2008 so currently I have 2x2TB disks in a RAID1 and formatted to NTFS. The RAID was working fine on Windows but it doesn't seem to work on Ubuntu. I have over 1.3TB of data currently on the RAID so I cannot format and start again. I need to find some way of getting Ubuntu to mount this RAID without having to format and create a software raid.
I'm unsure why it presents itself to Ubuntu as two separate disks as the RAID was setup on the RAID Array controller before it starts to load the operating system. Windows sees the RAID as a single disk and not two separate disks (although it can if I use a disk manager).
After some digging I have found out that the RAID format is PDC because Ubuntu can see the two disks and knows that they should be in a RAID but does not want to activate them. I don't want to go any further and experiment with commands until someone responds because I'd rather not risk my data.

I continue to have issues installing any of the newer version of Ubuntu on my ICH9 FAKERAID. I read that the GRUB2 issue with FAKERAID was solved shortly after Karmic was released. Did this somehow not get added to the Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 of Lucid? I would love to have Ubuntu installed on my main rig, but I do not want to fuss around with it forever...

I'm using Karmic koala 9.10 64bit.Have three HDD, WD Raptor 36GB X 2 and Seagate 160GB.2 WD Raptors are striped (RAID 0), and all hdds are formatted by ext4.(Intel ICH9R raid) Problem is that, when reading/writing hdd heavily, system freezes a moment or very very slow down. When I used a windows XP, there's no problem. Moreover, one other machine, Karmic Koala 9.10 64bit and ext3, no raid, works very fine.

Gparted does not recognize my intel ICH7 fake raid 0 partitions rendering it useless. Am I missing a package that will add this? I know the live disk can do this. Is it something to do with dmraid? using 10.04 64 bit ubuntu

I have 2 750GB harddrives with multiple NTFS and ext3 partitions and have just added two empty 1.5TB drives (with WD Advanced Format Technology) to the computer. I have several external drives of various capacities for temporary data storage. My final objective is to have two mirrored RAID arrays that I can access with both Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista (which I still need for applications that aren't supported by WINE), and I'm trying to find out how to do this.
At the moment, the 1.5TB disks are mirrored in the BIOS settings, and I was able to add a blank NTFS partition to the array using GParted. However, I am now unable to mount any of my partitions (other than the Ubuntu one) and cannot use GParted to copy a partition to the RAID array (I get a generic resource in use message, but I have no other applications open and am opening GParted after a fresh boot).
My Ubuntu install is heavily customized, so I would prefer not to reinstall it if at all possible. If it matters, the OS was not installed as 10.04, but was updated incrementally over time, starting at Hardy Heron. I initially did an apt-get install of dmraid and kpartx after reading [URL]
For some reason, my 750GB drives are recognized as belonging to a broken RAID array even though they are not set up that way in BIOS.
HD configuration:
sda: (I cannot mount any of these partitions )

I have a full working Mythbuntu 11.04 on a FakeRAID system (via ICH10R chipset). The OS is sitting on a 250GB partition and working fine. I am trying to get the 7.07TB partition mounted so that I can use it to store all my movies. When I mount it via the [URL] all works fine. When I reboot it cannot mount due to device being not ready or unavailable It appears the superblock goes missing at reboot. I have it formatted to ext4 with a GPT partition table. If I reformat and remount then all works fine again until I reboot.

I can't get CentOS to stop seeing my drives as a fakeraid, even though I disabled the raid settings in the bios. Therefore, I can't install. Previously, this box was running Vista 64 bit. I have an nVidia mainboard and two 500 GB sata drives. The mainboard offered raid support, so I enabled it. Windows saw the drives as a single raid0 drive and installed on it flawlessly. Never had a problem. Two days ago, I finally got off my horse and decided to get rid of windows and install CentOS. I left the raid intact, installed CentOS on the fake raid. Upon rebooting, GRUB wouldn't load. Booted up a live disk, fdisk saw the drives separately but couldn't read data from them.
Tried a second install, same problem. Wiped out the the data on the drives using gparted. Tried a third install, same problem. Did some research, found out that my raid was really a fakeraid and that a better option for my needs is a softraid. Disabled the fakeraid in the bios. Booted up the installer. It still loads the nvidia /dev/mapper driver. It still sees the drives as a fakeraid. Wiped out the drives using gparted. Booted up the installer. Still sees the drives as a single /dev/mapper/nvidia_lkjwer drive. Installed Ubuntu to see if I'm crazy, or if it's centOS. Ubuntu installed w/o a problem (on a single drive). Enabled, disabled, tweaked every freaking possible bios setting. Still sees the drives as a fakeraid.

I'm trying to rescue files from an Iomega NAS device that seems to be corrupted. This is the Storcenter rack-mount server - four 1tb drives, celeron, 1gb, etc. I'm hoping there's a live distro that would allow me to mount the RAID volume in order to determine if my files are accessible. Ubuntu 10.10 nearly got me there but reported "Not enough components available to start the RAID Array".
