Ubuntu :: Installation - Getting Laserjet 2100 To Connect ?

Mar 15, 2011

I'm trying to connect Ubuntu (wubi installation on Windows) to an HP LaserJet 2100M printer via a USB cable which worked on Vista (I'm migrating away from Vista into Ubuntu).

System > Administration > Printing..I could not see or add any printer.

I searched around and followed these instructions ..

How to Install HP Printer Driver onto Ubuntu 10.10

[url]

I downloaded hplip-3.11.1.run but in following installation instructions I think I may have needlessly removed a previously installed hplip driver ..3.10.6 .. and various dependencies were loaded with these errors ..

Now when I go to System > Administration > Printing

In troubleshooting there is no connection to CUPS server. The "Add" button is no longer green as before I started dabbling. No discovered printers.

How do I start again to get HP LaserJet 2100M connected (USB cable) .. and printing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Latitude 2100 Karmic Upgrade Touchpad Stopped Working

Feb 26, 2010

My Dell Latitude 2100 worked fine with the pre-installed Ubuntu 9.04. I upgraded to 9.10 and the touchpad stopped working. Restored to factory condition and it again worked fine. I re-did the upgrade, this time asking it not to delete the obsolete items.

Ubuntu :: Compaq Presario 2100 Won't Load On Normal Boot?

Mar 20, 2011

I'm trying to breathe life into this old laptop; so I installed Ubuntu on it and ran into a problem loading it in Desktop mode.

When I want to start into it normally, it gets to the home screen and does a quick frame skip, kind of like an old VHS tape, and then fails to load the toolbars on top and bottom.

Loading into safe mode works great, but no wireless option seems to be available in safe mode?

The normal boot even gets to the "Ubuntu!" welcome sound, but... then nothing. I looked up a few Linux keyboard shortcuts and none of them function. So.

Also did the updates in safe mode. Update Manager did NOTHING when I clicked "install updates" button, so I did it through the terminal sudo get-updates/upgrades.

General :: Set Up A Compaq Presario 2100 For Card Games?

May 23, 2010

I have an old compaq presario 2100 (amd athlon) laptop that came with windows xp. it can't deal with xp any more so i put mandriva on it and let my mother in law use it for card games. now it won't even boot mandriva.

it says something about a 1720 SMART error. i ran the hdd test and it gave me a code: 1# imminent failure.

it will run mandriva off the install disk but I want to make this as easy as possible for my mother in law to play her games. I don't think she'd like to deal with all the steps involved with running it off the install disk. the problem with that is that the install wizard runs every time i turn it on.

will i be able to do something to the effect that my mother in law will be able to easily boot up and play her card games on the laptop?

I thought I'd try again with 9.10. When I started to download this morning, I only saw a version for x86 32bit & 64bit. What should I use for an AMD Athlon x2? Have Intel & AMD been rolled into x86?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Intel PRO 2100 Not Working - RF Killswitch Button Not Working At All?

Feb 18, 2010

I followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection
firmware: requesting ipw2100-1.3.fw
eth0: Radio is disabled by RF switch.

When running iwconfig wlan0 heres what I get:

home/j-dub # iwconfig eth0
wlan0 unassociated ESSID off/any Nickname:"ipw2100"
Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: Not-Associated

[code]....

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400
1.4GHz Intel Centrino R

Ubuntu Installation :: Graphics And GUI No Longer Supported After Upgrade?

Mar 1, 2010

The last time I updated Linux it was from Gibbon to Heron. (so 7.10 to 8.04 ) I'm now trying to get caught back up. Thing is, now that I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 I can no longer get to a GUI. Also, most of the text in the terminal is a diamond character as if the font that's installed doesn't want to work most of the time. This is somewhat confusing, but I believe my system's language was set as Japanese before the upgrade and now it's trying to display Kana and/or Kanji and the terminal doesn't like that. Not really important, but I'm not sure how to proceed to the next upgrade or get to a GUI. Fortunately, my system's set up to dual-boot with windows. Can someone help tell me how to get my GUI back or what package to install?

I'm running on a laptop with an ATI mobility Radeon 9700. I've had problems with it and drivers in previous versions back to 6.10 too, but never to the point that the GUI wouldn't work. It's actually an issue with my X Server. I tried "startx" and it says "No Screens found". I looked in my xorg.conf file and there are two screens listed at the bottom. It produced a log too, but I can't get my Flash drive to mount so I can't say exactly what it says. It did mention that there were a lot of font directories that didn't exist along with a few other warnings.

Debian Installation :: Dialup Not Supported

Jul 9, 2015

My home connection is dialup via an 8-bit ISA modem. I plan to use the old box with the modem in it as a gateway and do my actual work on this laptop. Connection away from home is not so easy to get in my area.

SuSE 6.1 has no problem operating the modem, so the hardware works. SuSE 6.1 can't seem to make anything else work though. How can I configure Debian to see and operate this modem?

SuSE sees the modem on /dev/ttyS1. The same chat script does nothing on jessie. I'm guessing that jessie is just not seeing ISA.

I'm able to install packages onto the box via a usb drive but that's only on the days when the local coffee shop's wi-fi actually works, which is rare.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading With Least Amount Of Hassle - No Longer Supported Anymore

Aug 3, 2011

I would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.

How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?
