Ubuntu Installation :: Synaptic Package Manager Vs Ubuntu Software Centre
Dec 10, 2010
If I want to install a software package, for example, netbeans for Java, it seems that there are two ways to do that, first is through Ubuntu Software Centre, and the second much fancier one is to do it via Synaptic Package Manager. Are there any differences in the end result? Which one is better?

Neither the Software centre or package manager will open. its rather upsetting. The software centre gives me nothing to work with but when i open the package manager i get this error:
E: Type nchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialogue to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
i know that tells me exactly what i need to to but if someone could be so kind to give me step by step instructions to get this fixed it im new to ubuntu and its my primary os so i really need this fixed.

the computer is hooked to the internet, but when i try to reload synaptic pachage manager or try to install a software that is among the repositories i get always a few errors like:
w: failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...ic/release.gpg could not resolve 'username'
w: failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...tion-en_ca.bz2 could not resolve 'username'
w: some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
if i try to install a new software using ubuntu software centre i get "canonical provides critical updates for mysql client." i press the right arrow and nothing happens!even when i try to install adobe flash player i get in the final step the same errors of synaptic package manager. so far i can't watch videos. what can i do to fix this problem?

E: Type 'nchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list E: The list of sources could not be read. The above is the console output when i type sudo apt-get update Update manager throws the same error so now I can't install or update software .

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Have a new Dell Vostro A90 that came with 8.04 and I have installed 9.10 from a CD that was mailed to me. I can connect to the internet with a wired connection, but I cannot connect wirelessly. When I've tried to install the broadcom driver by going to Synaptic Package Manager and hitting reload, I get a message that 1 of 15 packages is downloading, but nothing downloads and I get a failed message for each of the jobs. Any clues as to how to proceed from here? I am very new to Ubuntu.

After installing the 'getdeb' and 'playdeb' debian packages that automate adding those repositories for [URL] my synaptic package manager started acting up giving me this error: ould not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct. Problem executing scripts APT::Update:re-Invoke '/usr/bin/daptup --pre'Sub-process returned an error code I am a long haul 48 state truck driver and it may be a couple days between replies until I can get to the next Wi-Fi hotspot.

Whenever I try to run the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, 'Starting Administrative Application' appears briefly on the taskbar - and then disappears! And nothing starts.I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them in case they were corrupt, but the same thing still happens. These two seem to be the only applications that behave this way, so can anyone think of anything that links the two of them and may cause this?

Pre update (10.10) Synaptic Package Manager would allow me to delete residual config files by clicking the Apply button after marking them. Post update, the Apply button does not highlight or allow me to click it when I mark packages for complete removal.

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from Ubuntu 10.10. After the upgrade, I wanted to do a system cleanup using Synaptic Package Manager. After, I have marked a package for removal, the "Apply" button is still shaded, i.e., I am not able to click the "Apply" button. The "Apply" button is still not functional even I am able to download and install packages.

I isntalled Ubuntu 10.04 LTS in a dual boot configuration with Windows 7 (new i5 desktop, 8 GB DDR3) , and after a few gliches solved, Ubuntu runs. The problem I have is when I try to install software with the Synaptic Package Manager, no packages can be downloaded. Also, after I attempt this, no other software can connect to the Internet (even if that software was able to connect before). Rebooting restores connectivity.

All of a sudden when I ran an update with the usual
Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade
I got an input / output error for a specific file followed by an exit with dpkg returning error code 1.
In this case the package (ubuntu-docs) is not exactly life threatening, so I would prefer any update process to simply skip that particular package and move onto the ones that are getting held up. I then opened Synaptic Package Manager where I located the erroneous package. I then unmarked the particular package (ie the blob in front of the package name was green, and the status line shows zeroes for all categories (broken, upgrade/install, remove). So far so good. I then found the 'lock version' menu item under the packages menu. I clicked it, and ran the reload thing. After that thought the package was marked for deletion however, and I once again couldn't get by this one bad package.
So (tl/dr perhaps), how can I make Synaptic / apt-get / or whatever to skip this bad package for real so that I can update my system normally going forward? (Why is it that the whole upgrade process is that fragile by the way? Surely there must the the occasional dud package upgrade that people want to skip, no? Having the whole process grind to a halt because of one issue seems border line paranoid to me. Of course on a minimal server installation where every package counts this behavior makes sense perhaps, but on a IMHO bloated plain vanilla ubuntu install?

we need to install gnuplot and synaptic manager fails because Intrepid is unsupported. I know we can update to a newer version but we cannot do it now (we'll do it during summer holidays). What's the best way of installing gnuplot (or some other aplication) on our systems? Should we download from sources and compile? Could we add some special source to our list and download from there?

Got Karmic Koala up on running on my main computer and have been going through Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition. It was printed during Jaunty Jackalope, but it looks like its information applies to most areas.
However, it says I should be able to find msttcorefonts in the Synaptic Package Manage, and it's not there. I double checked Writer and Times New Roman and the other true type staples are not there, so it's not that it was installed with the boot disk.
Has the name of the package changed?
