Installing from sources was always complicated to me, but biggest problem is installing when some strange dependencies are "missing". Let's do it on example - I am sure it will benefit lots of users.I have a unmodified ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) on 64 bir architecture. I download latest Grisbi sources from official web page.I didn't modify any paths to system variables...and it's usually problem with glib or gtk with all other sources I try to install.
1) Could someone help me in this particular case with missing dependencies please?
2) What every User should do when trying to install from source and some libraries are missing? How to find them? How to install them ?
Fascinatingly weird one here. First, this issue isn't on my computer, it's from someone who I am helping. I don't have first-hand access to the computer. Some background: the machine originally had Ubuntu Hardy, which we upgraded to Lucid a couple of weeks ago. Earlier this week, he gave me a call that Ubuntu wasn't booting up; it dropped to the command line. Some tinkering later, I figured out that libgthread-2.0.so had become corrupted, so X wasn't starting. It gave an error complaining that it had an invalid ELF header.I figured that this was just an odd freak occurrence; there was a bad kernel panic previously, so maybe the library was upgraded and the system was just writing to the disk at that time. Fixed via sudo aptitude reinstall libglib.
Ubuntu then started and everything ran perfectly. Today, he gave me a call. After he had restarted the computer, Ubuntu again dropped to terminal at the same point while booting. I had him open a new tty and run startx, which failed with a different shared library but the same error: libXext.so.6 has an invalid ELF header!
We had run updates, but I don't recall whether X's shared libraries were touched. Even if they were, though, that shouldn't affect anything. There were no hard resets between my fixing libgthread and libXext breaking. I'm going to try a clean install; I'm really just hoping we can figure out why this is, because it's an amazing little problem.
I am trying to run algodoo from terminal after I install it, but it doesn't run. It gives this error. I have been having troubles with permissions in the /usr folder recently, so I think that is what might have caused this. Please read through it thoroughly, as algodoo is actually located in the /opt folder.
Code: jon-Tuxbox:~$ sudo '/opt/Algodoo/algodoo/algodoo'
There are missing dependencies.
Please make sure that all the required libraries are installed.
Missing:
libcxcore.so.2.1 => not found
libcv.so.2.1 => not found
libhighgui.so.2.1 => not found

I am running Yellow Dog Linux release 6.2(Pyxis) on my PS3. I would like to compile and run C programs that utilize OpenMP for parallel programming. Unfortunately, I have not been very successful. I am able to compile programs containing OpenMP statements error free, but when I attempt to execute the binaries I receive the following error: Code: ./file: error while loading shared libraries: libgomp.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Compiling programs without OpenMP statements works fine.
Because it has to do something with missing libraries, I am not sure if knowing the executable search paths may help in diagnosis, but when echoing the path environment variable:

The version of GCC on this machine, 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-44), is identical to the ones I have on two other machines (CentOS release 5.3 (Final) and CentOS release 5.4 (Final)) and they both compile and execute OpenMP code flawlessly. I have tried building and installing another version of GCC that would possibly include the OpenMP libraries, since, according to some sources, GCC has only supported OpenMP since version 4.2. But I have not been successful with that either (that problem would make a good second thread.)
I'm having some issue running a wine application, this seems to not start 'cause of some missing libraries.
So I tried to locate those and the only one I found is this:
# locate libxcb.so.1
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1
/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1.1.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1.1.0
These others don't show any result, but I checked and all the corresponding deb pkgs are installed (both amd64 and i386):
libx11.so.6
libxext.so.6
libgl.so.1
libc.so.6
What do you think I can do to resolve? I aleady tried a reinstall. Not tried to purge 'cause apt asks to remove half of the system.
Trying to build git gimp raises an error about missing libcairo.la and libfreetype.la /usr/lib/ does not have those files though the build manifest shows they should be included. Both cairo-devel and freetype2-devel have been installed, rpm query produces; cairo-devel-1.10.2-6.11.1.i586 and freetype2-devel-2.4.4-6.1.i586 This is my first attempt at using SUSE, so it maybe I am missing something elementary

I'm having trouble installing software from the source files. From what I can gather the problem lies with not having the correct c libraries installed. My understanding is you use the ./configure, make, and make install commands in a terminal to install. And that the configure command checks to see if you have everything to install. this is the output when I try to configure:
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p
[code]...
My recent borked upgrade to -current inspired me to try to come up with a way to sanity-check the lib and bin dirs for broken library symlinks (possibly indicating missing libs) and for binaries and libraries that belong to no installed package, as well as missing dependencies.
This script is the result.
I've checked the script results manually, and it appears to be accurate, so I figured I'd post it here for a second opinion, and/or because others may find it useful too. I'm not aware of another popular method of doing this on Slackware, so here it is:

Why many Linux distros are trying to use always the latest versions of the libraries and don't save the old libraries for compatibility? I mean, I can see libtiff for example, i can found a libtiff.so.5 on my /usr/lib, but doesn't store a libtiff.so.4 or 3 just for binary applications or games. For this example, I need libtiff.so.4 for uplink.
That should happen too on the old version of sims for linux, some ID games or others. What's wrong with storing old libraries? PD: Yay, my first post on 3 years!
Looking at the AMD/ATI download pages, I can't tell if catalyst control center (which installs the drivers) is fully functional for Ubuntu 10.10.
Has anyone had success with this software?
I have integrated ATI Radeon 3200 HD graphics on my motherboard and can't get things working.
To begin with i have a Sony Vaio VPCEB24EN Laptop with configuration
Intel core i3 Processor
3 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5145, 512 MB
Installation of Ubuntu 10.10 Notbook edition make my lappy extremly hot in comparison to Windows 7, which includes degrading my battery performance from 3 hours to 45 min. As my CPU uses is normal, i deduce that my Graphics might be the cause of the heat and power consumption. Tried installing proprietory drivers from Get Software -> System -> Additional Drivers, which maximized the problem. My screen keep freezing now and then. So i uninstalled the driver and downloaded ati-driver-installer-10-11-x86.x86_64.run from ati site. While install it has issue of its own. The text written in the installer is invisible. [A print screen is attached]. This is to mention that the core fonts are installed in the system. I shall be glad if anyone have the solution for my problems
1. Over heating and battery backup issue.
2. ATI catalyst font issue.
I've got 10.10 up and running like a champ. Haven't done much in it, but all was well. After a little while I went in to turn the cool effects on, and it told me I needed a driver for my ATI card so I said go for it. It ended up putting Catalyst Control Center in for me. That's all fine and dandy except on the windows side I can get into an area that allows me to adjust overscan and turn it off (its a slider for under and overscan).
This version wont seem to let me do that, so now I'm stuck with either NOT a full screen, or no ability to have fun graphic effects. While your here, how can I change the data files which I think ubuntu refers to as your /home folder (documents pictures etc) to a different location? Windows7 and Ubuntu need to see the files in the same places so I don't have to have two working sets of files.
AFAICT, F14 does not have any formal support right now (no rpms, etc), and there are some pitfalls to using the ATI installer which I am sure have resulted in system re-installs, unhappy faces, and people stuck without a proper driver. This is because while the installer seems easy to use, it's unfriendly in so far as it does not check for pre-requisite software first, and when it craps outs, it doesn't tell you anything is wrong, but it will leave your system without a functioning X server. The first time I ran it, the GUI installer told me everything was complete and that all I needed to do was reboot! When I did, X would not work, and reinstalling the original xorg-ati driver, etc, did not fix it.....

Is there any way to use a dynamic libraries as a static libraries instead when compiling, so that my resulting executable won't have them as dependencies?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo xorg was acting up, and I went into the Hardware Drivers menu to see if the driver had a problem. The driver was disabled, and could not be activated. I downloaded the new ATI driver. I uninstalled the old one, installed the new one, and ran the config step just like it specifies in the install instructions. Upon reboot, I got a blank screen instead of the login screen.I managed to drop back to the command line and uninstall the driver, so now I'm stuck in ubuntu with one monitor instead of 2.
I'm going to attempt to revert to the old ATI driver (which I still have in my home dir), but I wanted to be sure to get this into the forums before I ruined my GUI again.
I have an ATI Radeon 6450 (*cough*shitty*cough*). Everything runs fine, but the graphics freeze up occasionally. I haven't installed anything/changed any files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to set up ubuntu 10.10 on a computer WITHOUT Internet access.I also need to install a package on it but it has several dependant libraries (eg libX11-dev)If i just have the names of those libraries & the package, where can i find them, so that they can be downloaded onto a pendrive & then installed onto the comp? (What would a library file look like after download?)
Also after i have copied the files onto the other comp (assuming that it was possible), how do i install the library? Would synaptics recognise that i have installed this library if done manually by this method?

I have Ubuntu 10.04. I installed the KDE libraries to use Okular. Then Ubuntu took almost 30s more to boot (20s black screen between login and desktop). I uninstalled KDE, booted on another kernel, rebooted and the boot time was OK again (25s).
I reinstalled KDE, 55s to boot again. Rebooted couples of times always the same. Rebooted on another kernel then again on mine (it seems to fix the slow boot times).
Boot time was 35s (I thought it was OK). After lauching Okular, the boot time was again 55s...
Removed KDE, Okular, and the boot time is normal again since 10 reboots..
I have just installed from the Live Cd (Fedora 13). So far so good except that I have just installed the updates (which has taken some time) .
The updater screen shows a full progress bar and next to the progress bar is this text " checking for libraries currently in use" this has been at least one hour showing the same thing, it hasn't changed (PC is still running OK). Does this mean I can safely quit and the updates will be OK or should I keep waiting for a reboot screen or updates success message ? Is this normal, if so how long does it usually take to complete?
the installation procedure of boost c++ libraries .. i.e boost 1.34.1 on centos..
