Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Gcc/g++ 4.2 On Lucid?
Jul 10, 2010The title says it all. There are gcc 4.1 4.3 and 4.4 in the repositories, but the 4.2 is missing. And I need this one.

View 3 RepliesUpgraded to Lucid and there is no volume control on the upper panel just to the left of the date calendar/time like there was on Karmic and earlier versions. Searched but can't find it. How can I put it back on the upper panel? It looked like a speaker with sound waves coming out of the speaker. I always used it on other versions before.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter moving to Lucid, I have no flashplayer. Eventually, I tracked the problem to a missing Cannonical repository. I inserted the line in the sources list: [URL] Now Synaptic reports:
E: Type [URL] is not known on line 45 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have re-checked everything I can think of, and remain baffled!
Today I installed Ubuntu Lucid, and now I cannot connect with my adsl usb modem.
Previously, on older versions, I used pppd, but now it gives me this error:
Code:
There is no module ppp_generic in the system, nor ppp_generic.c to compile in ppp related packages.
Has something changed from karmic regarding this module?
I've installed lucid on two computers now and have been using or a few months.Overall, it's pretty good and everything just works. However, every now and then (seemingly random), the power button in the indicator appletsion panel widget randomly disappears, so I'm unable to shut down my computer without re-adding the widget, or using the command line to shutdown the computer. Now this is acceptable for me, an advanced user. However, this is not acceptable for my parents and family, who also use ubuntu computers. Today, my mother called me to ask why she couldn't turn off her computer. I was dumbfounded, and had to walk her through turning it off "by hand."
Now this is not me accidentally removing the indicator applet session panel item. No, I can still see the user name bubble with availability information and I can still switch users. It's just that the power button is completely missing (sometimes the place where it used to be is occupied by a corrupt graphic). Additionally, if I login later, the power button magically returns without me having to do anything with regards to the panel. This is disappointing indeed.
Honestly, this is why ubuntu and linux in general still have the reputation they do of being non-user-friendly. At least in windows or mac, when I get fed-up I can turn it off. But not so in ubuntu. No ubuntu tortures me continuously and I marvel that such a simple thing has escaped the minds of such advanced programmers. I wish Canonical would focus on letting us TURN OFF the computer instead of adding crazy features that I'm not going to use. I mean how can a real operating system fail at such a simple task
Has anyone managed to get wireless Ralink rt3070 drivers working in Lucid? Before in Karmic, you could "sudo modprobe rt3070sta" as they were "stagging" drivers already in the kernel, but apparently they're missing from the kernel in Lucid as reported here [URL]... I get errors when compiling the latest drivers from Ralink (DPO_RT3070_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.2_20100412) and they don't seem to work.

Canon MX320, MX330, MX860 printer installation on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit. I am sure Ubuntu Lucid is similar. Once I upgraded to Lucid 10.04 AMD64 bit I found that getting a Canon Pixma MX printer installed was not going to be easy. So I thought it help others if I posted my experience here. To pull this off you will need both the Debian package, (.deb), and the source package from either
Canon Europe: [URL]... Or Canon Australia: [URL]... NOTE: The only reason to get the source is to access the ppd files. They are in the Debian package but it is a lot more work to walk newbies through unpacking the .deb. Since there are errors in the source code it makes impossible to compile a driver. Therefore, you will need to install the 32bit Debian package and force the architecture, then add the correct printer driver from the ppd file in the source package. While these instructions worked for me there are a few assumption I make which mat affect your outcome. My MX860 has a wireless network connection.
In other words I have no idea if this will or will not work on a USB attached printer. (If someone would be kind enough to post back if they get that configuration working that would be cool.) The other assumption is that the general reader is relatively new to Lunix and the command line interface. The commands were cut and pasted from my working kconsole, so they should work for anyone. Here we go:........
I am setting up a mail server. After installation of shorewall-common, shorewall-doc
Following this link http://flurdy.com/docs/postfix/
For setting up
It requires me to copy thge content of /usr/share/doc/shorewall-common/default-config/rules to /etc/shorewall
cp /usr/share/doc/shorewall-common/default-config/rules /etc/shorewall/
But i observed that the folder default-config is missing. I have purge it apt-get and reinstalled but still it does it have that folder. What could cause this thing and how can i go about it?
I have just installed ubuntu with a USB key, I have Vista installed in drive C: and I created a partition (L: ) and installed Linux root (/ ) in that one. When there was the screen where I could choose the boot loader i left the default option instead of choosing Windows Vista Loaderand now I can't boot Vista anymore.
In grub i see a windows vista option, but that option brings me to a recovery partition and not to the real operative system. I know that vista is not broken because when I used wubi I was able to boot from the vista bootloader without any problems, but I never could boot vista from grub because it brought me to that recovery partition.I can access all my files on the disk from ubuntu, but I would like to be able to restore the vista boot loader and use again windows when I need it.Is there a way to restore vista's boot loader? I tried to do automatic startup repair from the vista recovery cd but it says that no problem could be found.
After screwing up my current UNR install, I have decided to get a fresh installation of regular Lucid without all the BS that comes with the netbook remix, BUT when I boot from usb and start the process I can't get past the keyboard selection phase... it just hangs there forever. I tried making a usb with the alternate text based version too but it halts at the same spot, namely detecting hdd's. Now, I've installed the UNR previously from usb without any problems so something is wrong here, I just haven't got any wiser from reading whats online either. I checked the forums etc but didn't find any answers... I'm on an Asus Eee 1005PE by the way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Linux and wanted to get experience with Ubuntu Server for my new build NAS, because just a NAS OS wouldn't be enough for me. I wanted a server so I can also setup a PDC and webserver. So currently I'm installing ubuntu server 10.04 onto my newly assembled server via usb stick(didn't build in dvd rom drive) I checked the BIOS before loading the OS onto the computer and everything is detected.
there's 1 thing that keeps bugging me. After installation i get a message that the install is complete and usb sticks and all devices should be removed to prevent it from booting the install again. However when i remove the usb stick and I reboot the server I get the following message on the screen:
missing operating system
or
can't find operating system
When I do let the usb stick in, it boots into Ubuntu Server and i can see all my configurations that I made eventhough during install I chose to install it on the HD and paid attention to it I wouldn't touch the usb stick. From here on i could configure the rest, like samba, and give my server an static ip address via the command line.Back to my problem: what can i do to make my server boot from HD without that I have the usb stick in?
uring its installation I faced the same problem as now: because my default sound card is gone and I am using an external one, during the installation, everythnig goes fine untill the first try for boot of the system, when the blue lines loads, loads, and stop on about 80%.I was told by specialist that the reason fot this is that the hardware check is failing and that this is why the system can not load. He disabled my sound card so to Fedora not to check for it (I don't know how) and installed Fedora 13. Now I am using it. And I am using an external sound card as well and I have sound working.
But now I want to instakll Fedora 14. And i tried and the same happened again!!! After installation, the blue bars loads, alods, untill abou t 80% and then stop! Please, tell me what to do! I have no connecion to the specialist now but I want to get Fedora 14 nstalled, and working with sound. This is the problem - that I have only external sound card

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to Lucid, I found that I still had a need for php 5.2, instead of the 5.3 that is installed during the Lucid upgrade. I tried the method found here:

I added in /etc/apt/preferences.d/php all the packages that I use for php, including libapache2-mod-php5, installed, and ran a2enmod php5 before restarting apache. However, my browser still tells me if I want to download php files on my server. I cleared the browser cache, a2enmod'ed again, restarted apache2 again, and still the same.

EDIT: I should note I can get SOME php files parsed by apache, but some are not parsed. All files reside in some subdirectory of /var/www/.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with a new install of Lucid freezing a few seconds after booting up. Completely frozen - ctrl-alt-backspace or alt-SysReq-R-E-I-S-U-B have no effect. The md5sum of the installation iso was all right, the disk check was all right, & the memory test was all right. It's a GeForce 5500 graphics card, but I haven't installed any special drivers. Booting up to the command line (netboot) helps a bit but it still crashes after from a few minutes to a couple of hours. From the command line I tried removing compiz & compiz-core but it makes no difference. I also updated the installed packages, including to the 2.6.32-22 kernel, but no difference. This has happened with Jaunty & Karmic, but Intreprid runs fine, as did Windows XP. Anyone have any ideas what I could do to find out the cause ?

I have in a box of parts two wireless NICs, an Asus WL-1380G V2 and a Trendnet TEW-423PI C1.0R.
Googling shows that people have had a lot of trouble with these two NICs in older Ubuntu versions. Am I likely to have any success with either of them in Lucid?
Is there a list of supported wireless NICs for Lucid?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a choice of NIC?
Tonight I installed Lucid(10.04) on my laptop, which is a VAIO VPCCW. The first problem I faced was the blank screen when trying to install Ubuntu. That was solved by pressing F6 and activating "nomodeset" Afterwards, I had to edit Grub, removing splash and quiet and adding nomodeset, to get it running.
Because of the low resolution and lack of support for effects, I intalled the proprietary driver for nvidia and restarted. Now I'm getting a message saying the display cannot be found etc and it is running is low graphics mode. When trying to open nvidia-settings, I get "You do not appear to be using nvidia X driver. edit your X configuration file(just run nvidia-xconfig as root) ... " And obviously, running nvidia-xconfig as root didn't change anything.
I was forced to move to Windows a month ago as a result of this issue(bought a new laptop) and now I see the problem is not resolved yet.

Last time, I had a disaster with Jaunty. The suspect is Gnome, as Crunchbang works. Is there a chance that I could have issues using the 64-bit 10.04 LTS? I need a stable system. It is going to take me a while to set up the new system so I want to make sure I'm prepared for any issues. I'm doing a clean install. I can pull up hardware types, etc, if need be later tonight.
