Ubuntu Installation :: DD IMG File To New HDD?

Jul 4, 2011

I recently had to update my HDD since I needed more space . Hence I backed up my old 20 GB Linux HDD using the DD command and created a 20 GB IMG file. I used this IMG file to be transffer to a 100 GB partition , however it just used 20 GB on this partition as well ! IE only 20 GB of space is available on the new 100 GB HDD !

Ubuntu Installation :: ImportError: Libapt-pkg-libc6.9-6.so.4.7: Cannot Open Shared Object File: No Such File Or Directory

Oct 31, 2010

After upgrading from 10.4 to 10.10, the Ubuntu Software Center refused to start, and I got an icon in the notification area saying that "a problem occurred when checking for the updates." When I run software-center in the terminal, I get this error message:

Code:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/software-center", line 88, in <module>
from softwarecenter.app import SoftwareCenterApp
File "/usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/app.py", line 32, in <module>

[code]...

I've tried re-installing apt and all related packages, even dpkg, and even downloaded the apt package directly from the ubuntu web site, but no matter what I do, I can't run these things. Aptitude and apt-get seem to work fine.

Fedora Installation :: 15 Installation Fails With Grub Error - File Not Found

May 24, 2011

Ive installed about 50+ boxes with ubuntu/mint/fedora/etc but f15 is giving me a real headache...

I tried a fresh install over f14 with this drive (sdb, sda is my backup disk)

Installed obviously in part7

After rebooting (successful copied live image on hdd)

Code:

After another couple of installs (with lvm & w/o lvm) & even disconnecting the second harddrive -> same issue

Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns

Code:

Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.

Now again on fedora 14, same installation procedure, works fine. (and i wont bother doing a full distro upgrade from f14)

Fedora Installation :: 13 Installation DVD - Some Random .rpm File Could Not Be Found

Aug 23, 2010

I have attempted to download and burn the fedora 13 i386 installation DVD twice, however, both DVDs that I burned failed during installation. I verified the .iso before burn and the dvd before installation and in both cases they were fine. But during installation, I received error messages that some random .rpm file could not be found (for each attempt it was different). All other configuration went fine, this only happened after the final package selection and when the actual installation starts.

EDIT: I am burning the DVD on my mac book pro using disk utility but performing the installation on a Toshiba Satellite.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can Install From A File - No CD Or USB Key?

I have played with the "Live" CD / USB before, and it's my prefered way to install. However, I have an old lappie which won't boot from USB, and I have no blank CDs. I can get files onto it (Windows XP) via the USB keys or the network... but ... is there a way to copy an ISO onto it and force it to run as if it had booted up with it? Is there a utility to allow running the file that the Live USB is made from, with Windows no longer running?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot With ISO File Without CD?

Feb 16, 2010

I am absolutely not sure if this is correct channel to discuss ideas, please bear with me.

Problem: As a linux fan, I tend to tryout all linux Distro and its Releases, so, I burn a CD/DVD for each (Release) X (Distro) and install it, for next Release or another Distro, I burn another CD/DVD, so till now, I have nearly 100(s) of disks lying in my CD bank.

Constraints: Internet connection at my place is very slow, so cannot use network booting, I don't have a networked environment, so cannot setup the local network booting environment too.. (I download the ISOs from netcafe and get it to my home in pendrive)

Like me there could be *many* users who are unnecessarly consuming plastic disks for single installation, and hampering mother nature!!

Solution: One will download an boot-able ISO and place it on his machine, then, he will boot machine with *generic* booting CD which create a *virtual* CD ROM and mounts the specified ISO and start booting process once more, installation follows...

Ubuntu Installation :: ISO File With Most Recent Updates

Jan 3, 2010

After not having used Ubuntu for a few months now, I want to make up a new LiveCD and possibly a bootable USB. The times I have done this in the past, the installations don't include recent updates which need to be downloaded and installed once the system is running. (Understandably)

Two questions:

1) Does Ubuntu update the downloadable ISO periodically to include recent updates?

...for example: Now that it is January (ie. some 3 months after release of Karmic in October '09 and some 200-300Meg+ of updates required since that time), will I be downloading an ISO from Ubuntu that has recent updates already as part of it, or will it still require updates to be downloaded and installed once Ubuntu is running on the computer?

2) If the downloadable ISO has not been updated since Oct '09, is there a way of making a LiveCD/bootable USB that has up-to-date updates already installed? (if you know what I mean?) ....and is this process relatively simple?
