Ubuntu Installation :: Corrupted Login Splash After Update 9.04 - 9.10

Apr 4, 2010

I just ran an update of ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and now the "startup" splash and the login splash is gone. Instead I see the terminal during bootup and the login prompt is some strange sparse login screen looking like it was taken from some old CDE GUI. What has happened and how do I fix it?

I can also add that while upgrading I chose to let the menu.lst remain untouched which turned out to be a bad mistake. So I added the following lines manually to compensate for my mistake.

But that didn't resolve my problems. I also tried the following without success:

After loging myself out and pressning ALT+F1/ALT+F7...

Ubuntu Installation :: New Natty VBox Install - Splash Breaks Login Prompt?

May 5, 2011

I just installed a test Natty VirtualBox server from the "mini" iso. After doing that the normal boot always ends with a blank screen and cannot login. The recovery boot option does work normally. After much digging around and various tests I found that the "splash quiet" boot options cause this issue.

I removed them from the /etc/defaults/grub file and ran update-grub. Next boot the login screen came up after as normal. It seems when the splash flashes that purple screen with the Ubuntu 11.04 message it is breaking something and does not get back out of some graphics mode.

This is in a VirtualBox window and I noticed that vesa framebuffers seem to be used by default in grub now. I never had this issue in previous releases and I'm just wondering if others have seen this and if there is a better fix than disabling splash. I don't mind having it disabled as this is a server install anyway and I'm fine with seeing debug messages during boot. If other have seen this then perhaps it needs to be logged as a bug?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login / After Couple Seconds Returned To The Login Splash Screen?

Oct 10, 2010

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

Ubuntu Installation :: After Logging In The Screen Remains In The Login Splash And A Small Terminal Appears In The Upper Left Corner

Jan 23, 2010

recently had to reinstall ubuntu 9.10....after all the updates & changes i made in synaptic and some restarts, i wanted to proceed in installing my nvidia drivers, so i stopped gdm and attempted to login as root, but it would not let me. it's strange because i created the root account password prior to this.

so, issuing the command to restart gdm brought me to the login window. after logging in, the screen remains in the login splash and a small terminal appears in the upper left corner. can't seem to get gnome started up.

Ubuntu :: Splash To Terminal Login To GUI Login

Jan 10, 2011

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. After installing the ATI drivers, I had to tweak GRUB to get the nice splash screen back during boot. Then, I installed drivers for my TV Tuner (Hauppauge 2250). The card works fine. However, my boot now goes splash screen to a terminal login for around 10 sec where system messages also show up to the GUI Login screen. I was wondering if there was anyway to return to a normal boot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Login After Update - Could Not Update ICEauthority File

May 5, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 on my Toshiba 32-bit laptop without any problems.Since the upgrade I am starting to have troubles on this machine. Most others are 64-bit and bar an Evolution issue are fine.In this case, 24 hours after the upgrade the machine wanted to do an Update. It would not allow the update until I fixed some broken packages which I did via Synaptics Package Manager. I then Marked All Upgrades and did the update from there. It was fine until I shut down and tried to log in again.I got the Blue Screen of Death!!!!!! I thought only Windows had this!Anyway, I could not log in. The auto login was not working so I used Other which gave me Recovery, entered my UN and PW, and I got the error message:

HTML Code:

Could not update ICEauthority file

I have searched the forum and some other sites, but none of the ideas can I get to work. I can start the machine using a 9.10 CD in the trial mode, but can not download the files suggested or delete the ICEauthority file, etc...

Red Hat :: Set Console Font (corrupted After Yum Update)?

Mar 11, 2009

I'm running RHEL 5.3 on one box at work; after the initial installation, the console font was fine (although it was visible in only one of two monitors: dual-head was configured automatically). After the first yum upgrade (which brought in dozens of packages), the console font became almost unusable. At first I can log in (say, on TTY1), but after the next few keystrokes every blank part of the display is changed to a capital G with a caret. Also, stdout (in some cases) is in an unreadable (for me, cyrillic maybe?) font. (And now the same - corrupted - display is visible in both monitors) I can't find the command to choose another console font. Looked in the "system-config*" type scripts to no avail

Software :: Avast Workstation Has Corrupted Itself With It's Own Update?

Feb 21, 2011

Well this is something I didn't think I'd have to deal with quite so soon after putting Ubuntu on my laptop.

Being the paranoid individual that I am, I decided to put Avast antivirus (called workstation) on my Ubuntu install. That worked just as smoothly and quickly as expected.

Trouble started when I went to update it. It freaked out and gave me some kind of error. In my moment of idiocy I forgot to write it down, but needless to say, something didn't work, and now I can't touch the avast workstation.

Attempting to open it produces an error window that only says "Error occurred in Avast! engine: invalid argument". Reinstalling does nothing, and since I'm clueless as to how Linux works, I do something I can't fix short of a reformat of the Ubuntu partition on my drive.

I've looked in the software manager, and Avast doesn't even show up in the list. I have no idea what to do at this point. I have a suspicion that when it attempted to update it's core engine the files had to be deleted, but since I didn't run it with root privileges it couldn't delete the outdated engine.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Stuck At Login Splash / AMD 5870

Oct 5, 2010

I just installed 10.04, 64-bit on a work computer that has an AMD 5870 GPU with the latest drivers from AMD (possibly relevant). I keep getting stuck on login at the Ubuntu logo with the five red dots beneath it. I can SSH into the machine from another machine, and I can hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete, which reboots after flashing some text.

I can also log in by amending Grub to remove the "quiet splash" and by hitting ctrl-X, but I can't get the X server to start from a text prompt. It generally gives me a blank screen after I type "startx," and I have to force-reset the computer. (I've been reading the forum for all the hints about how to fix this issue).

Interestingly, sometimes when I reboot I get a "...disk drives are being checked for errors..." message under the Ubuntu splash logo, and if I let this go to completion, I can log into the GUI without any problem. If I hit ctrl-C during the check, it won't log in.

So, right now I'm logged in to the GUI, but I'm afraid to reboot for fear of the dreaded red dots and no login.

OpenSUSE Install :: Yast Zypper Corrupted After Aborting Update

May 8, 2010

I was updating all the installed packages on my system yesterday via YAST. The package manager seemed to hang when downloading a small update for YAST itself (related to ncurses, I think) so I hit the abort button. The package manager quit but now it doesn't work. Trying to start the software management module (Qt version) give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in qt-pkg
Check the log file!

So I then tried the console version of YAST. The software management module doesn't work here either. It give me the following error:
UI Syntax Error
Couldn't load plug-in ncurses_pkg
Check the log file!

I Googled a bit and came to the conclusion that for the second error I should try the following command:
zypper install yast2-ncurses-pkg
But this just gives me another error:
zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.619: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So now it appears that both YAST and zypper are corrupt!

Ubuntu :: Fedora's Grub Messed Up Login Splash Screen?

Jun 4, 2011

I installed Fedora on a separate partition and during the install prompts forgot to uncheck the Grub installation. So, Fedora installed with Grub 1 (imagine that) although I was able to find instructions to upgrade it to Grub 2 (plus it recognized all the OS on the computer). So far so good, I don't have a preference whether Fedora's or Ubuntu's Grub is installed, however the Ubuntu Startup Splash screen is messed up, ie. a simple purple background with "Ubuntu" in system fonts. Is there a way to fix this back to the graceful default splash screen? Can I change back the Grub to be Ubuntu's?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Longer Login After Update?

Feb 28, 2011

I am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!

I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.

I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Broke GUI Login - Gnome Power Management

"The configuration has not installed correctly for Gnome power management".
Updated my 11.04 install via the update manager last night. When I turned my computer on today it wouldn't boot into the normal gui desktop. Where my normal login screen usually appears a different login screen appears with my username. I login. Screen flickers black for a few seconds and a page with a ton of text shows up for a fraction of a second ( too short of a time to read a single word). more flickering. Then I am returned to the slightly different login screen once again with the error. I tried booting into failsafeX gui mode. Same issue.

Ubuntu :: Reset All Personalization Such As Splash Screen And Colors In Grub Splash To Default?

Apr 25, 2010

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Corrupted Xfs Partition?

May 4, 2010

Being an Ubuntu enthousiast (both professionally as well as at home), I upgraded my home server from 9.10 to 10.04 yesterday. It runs kvm with only 1 vm. Host and vm we're both ubuntu 9.10 64bit. I upgraded both to 10.04. So far so good. Also did reboots to load the new kernel image.

For data storage I have a large (6,35TB) XFS partition. This partition is exported to the vm as a block device (vdb). This morning I noticed the vm has crashed. The XFS partition (mounted as /home) was shut down. Is this just bad luck? Or is it 10.04?

Code:
May 4 08:00:18 fileplanet kernel: [68558.681584] ffff8800241c8000: 58 41 47 46 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 02 0f ff ff ff XAGF............

[Code]....

I tried booting with an older (2.6.31) kernel, but didn't help. Can I safely run xfs_repair without causing any more damage?

All disks in this system are attached to an Areca hardware raid controller configured in Raid5 and has been operating for months now without any problem.
