Ubuntu :: How Do I Downgrade Sun Java?

Feb 24, 2011

I had a performance problem with Sun Java 1.6.20 when running OOo Base some time back. When I upgraded to 1.6.22 the problem was resolved. The other day I upgraded to 1.6.24, and my performance problem is back. So I would like to go back to 1.6.22.Well, I found the debs for 1.6.22, used Synaptic to remove (complete removal) sun-java-jre and sun-java-bin. Then I tried to install 1.6.22. I got a message saying the package was broken. If I respond to repair the package, 1.6.22 is upgraded to 1.6.24. If I do not ask that the package be repaired, java does not work properly.

Ubuntu :: Install Latest Java Version - Java SE 6 Update 24?

Feb 18, 2011

If you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.

Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

Slackware :: Installing Java Error - When Trying To Run A Java App With The Firefox Plugin - Browser Crashe

May 29, 2011

Code: ~ $ /usr/java/jre1.6.0_25/bin/java -showversion Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.

Feb 18, 2011

This is my first post and I'm pretty new on Debian. I had used Ubunu for a while now and I've decided to move on Debian Squeeze.But I've one problem: I've a Java programm to install and the installer is GUI Java based. When I run the script, I've the next message:

Extracting the JRE from the installer archive.Unpacking the JRE.Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive.Configuring the installer for this system's environment.Launching installer Graphical installers are not supported by the VM. The console mode will be used instead. Preparing CONSOLE Mode Installation. But this program is not able to run the installation in console mode.

I've tried to install sun-java6-jre but without success.Has anyone an idea to help me install this programm? My Configuration: Debian Squeeze 6.0 amd64.

Ubuntu :: Any Way To Downgrade To 9.04

Feb 5, 2010

I am having problems with 9.10 (first and foremost it won't boot properly, opens in low graphics mode only) and wishing I'd stuck with 9.04! Only find threads that didn't get answered or closed threads (including one about 'partial upgrades', which I did after booting in low graphics mode the first time. I am new to, or at least pretty green about Ubuntu and pretty much always install any updates offered - don't shoot me) Anyhow, I am hoping to avoid a full re-installation, but is there any way of going back, downgrading to 9.04?

Ubuntu :: Downgrade From 10.04 64 Bit To 32 Bit?

Jul 24, 2010

I have used the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 for a while and am satisfied with it. The problem is when I watch video (Bloomberg) and listen to radio at the same time, it uses up a lot of memory (My PC has 3 GB of Ram). It degrades the performance of the PC. I also read that the only reason to use a 64 bit version is when a PC has 4 GB of Ram. Therefore, I wonder if it is possible to downgrade my current 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 to a 32 bit version.

Ubuntu :: Downgrade From 11.04 To 10.10?

Feb 27, 2011

Last night I upgraded to Natty 11.04 and did not like it. I downgraded to 10.10.
I'm having a problem booting to a stable kernel. 11.04 uses 2.6.38. When I downgraded to 10.10, 2.6.38 was still at the top of Grub's list. When I boot there is a big black screen with a login and password. I was able to get to Ubuntu by holding down the shift key when rebooting and booted to 2.6.35-25-generic. I would rather not have to do this every time I turn on my computer. I went to Synaptic to delete 2.6.38, and did not see the version listed. I've read a lot (but I'm not a programmer). There isn't anything obvious (from this pea brain's perspective) to fix my problem.

Ubuntu :: Downgrade Back To KDE 3?

Jun 17, 2010

I have currently the LATEST version of Kubuntu 10.04 and I just DO NOT LIKE kde 4.. There are things I liked better in 3 than I did 4. I hate the desktop containers I hate when you turn them off and put your icons on the desktop they pop back to where they were before I just found it to have more JUNKWARE than I wanted. I just want simple KDE 3 back.

I had KUBUNTU 8.10 and thinking I was getting KDE 3 it gave me KDE 4.0.0 ( the one where the taskbar was black )

Is there a way to find to get I guess 8.04 to get KDE 3.5 back?

Ubuntu :: Downgrade GDM To 2.20 In 10.04 Lucid?

Sep 9, 2010

The result After following these instructions you'll get:

-GDM 2.20, with all the features(themes, feature complete, configurable...)

-No Plymouth, or any graphical boot (haven't found a way to run old gdm along with Plymouth)

These instructions are based on this post [URL] but they won't work on Lucid 10.04 Download GDM 2.20 on this link. Remove gdm and install the downloaded package.

Code:

sudo apt-get remove gdm
sudo dpkg -i gdm*.deb
sudo mv /etc/init/gdm.conf /etc/init/gdm.bak

Run these commands (related to a bug in this package):

Code:

cd /usr
sudo mkdir X11R6
cd X11R6
sudo ln -s /usr/bin bin

Disable the graphical boot (reason: Plymouth loads X, and old gdm can't connect, fixes are welcome)

-Edit /etc/default/grub and change

Code:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="splash quiet"

to

Code:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"

Run:

Code:

sudo update-grub2

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Downgrade To 10.04

Oct 16, 2010

how is it possible to downgrade to the Ubuntu 10.04 from Ubuntu 10.10?

I have two reasons for doing it:

1. My internal microphone stopped working in new kernel (ThinkPad Egde 13')

2. New Ubuntu's look and feel is ugly.

Probably this problem may be solved with installing the theme, but it seems not to affect the font, which is the most terrible thing in new release's design. Is it possible to have the 10.04's look and feel here in 10.10?

Ubuntu :: How To Downgrade Nautilus

Nov 1, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 has nautilus 2.31, which has a couple of features i don't like:space bar doesn't open multiple folders, like ENTER does. Sometimes it's more comfortable to hit the space bar instead of the enter key. I could do this in fomer versions (ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04).when i copy folders or files which are called the same as the ones in the destination folder, the prompt to replace/merge has the options accept and skip, and if i want to do the same every time the soincidence of names takes place, y have to first tick "always do the same" and then click "replace", for example. In former versions of nautilus/ubuntu (8.10, 9.04 at least) the prompt had buttons replace-replace all-skip-skip all, so a single click could do the job.How can i go back to those versions of nautilus, while still using ubuntu 10.04?

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Downgrade To 10.10

Apr 29, 2011

When you get to the login screen at the bottom there is a box where you can select "Ubuntu Classic" and that will take you to a Gnome 2.3 desktop.I just updated to 11.04 which is so disappointing.It is like I am coming from multi-thread world back to single-thread world. Any in one workspace, you can only do one thing: either surfing internet or something else, but you cannot do both at the same time.On 10.10, we can do multiple things simultaneously and we can switch between each other easily. Now the good feature of 10.10 is completely discarded.

Ubuntu :: Downgrade Firefox 5 To 4?

Jun 28, 2011

I thought I would find this everywhere but I haven't. I upgraded to Firefox 5 when it came into Mozilla's stable PPA but about 60% of my plugins are not working. I've tried forcing compatibility using the Nightly Tester tools but still have tons non-functional. Is there a safe procedure to downgrade to v4.x? Is there a PPA with 4 still available (Mozilla simply removed it entirely). I'm using Lucid 10.4.2 32bit. I'm normally pretty careful on upgrades but this one got past me. This new release schedule is going to kill Firefox if they don't solve the plugin issue.
