Software :: EXT3-fserror: Inode Bitmap For Group 4 Not In Group

May 25, 2011

I've been tasked with fixing a Red Hat system that dies with a kernel panic during the boot stage:

Code:

EXT3-fserror (dev sda1): ext3_check_descriptors: Inode bitmap for group 4 not in group (block 67239937)!
EXT3-fs: group descriptors corrupted!
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: Invalid argument

I can boot into a Rescue CD, but I'm a bit out of my element because I don't use EXT3 myself, and I've never had to repair a corrupted file system before.

General :: Group Member Not Able To Write To Group's File?

Feb 8, 2011

I have a group (GROUP) with a number of users. I recently added a new user (NEW). NEW is able to read but not write group files, whereas all the other users in the group can read and write to the group files. The permissions for the group files indicate that all members of group should have write permission -rwxrwxr-x

/etc/group indicates that NEW is a member of GROUP
...
GROUP:x:501:GROUP,OLD,OLD2,OLD3,OLD4,....,NEW

[code]....

Don't know if it matters, but both OLD and NEW write to the GROUP files over an internet connection. why NEW can't write to GROUP files? Is there a maximum number of members in a group that I might have exceeded?

Security :: Add A Group Of Users To The Wheel Group?

May 19, 2010

I have a number of users, categorised into various groups. I would like one of those groups ("developers") to be in the wheel group as well. I don't want to just copy the people from the developers group into wheel, because then when that group changes I'll have to change it in two places. Is there a way to specify that anyone in developers is in wheel, and have that be dynamic?

Software :: Member Of Group Root / But Root Group Permissions Don't Apply?

Apr 20, 2010

A bit of an oddity that I've recently run into with my storage folder in my system; it's a newly installed drive that I've set to mount at /storage. When I first tried to use it, programs that I used that attempted to write to it tossed Access Denied errors at me in their own way. Checking the permissions (at the Terminal, ls -l / | grep storage) showed that /storage was set to 'rwxrwxr--'--Owner and Group were given full read/write/execute, but Others could only read. However, my logon to my system is a member of group root. Why, then, with the above bits set, would I not be able to write to it? Changing Others permissions to rwx (and presumably rw would have worked out for me since I don't leave anything executable there) allowed me to write to it, but I don't understand why that would have been necessary. So far as I'm aware, the prior drive that was in my system--mounted at the same location--did not need this treatment.

Software :: Allow A Group/user To Execute A Command, Where One Of The Parameters Of The Command Is A Group As Well?

Is it possible to allow a group/user to execute a command, where one of the parameters of the command is a group as well? example that does not work as intended:

Code:
Cmnd_alias SU=/bin/su -l %group1 This example works sortof, it treats the "%group1" literally. I know I can list out the "/bin/su -l <eachuser>", but as you can imagine that is impractical. In this example, I want people in group2(not shown for brevity sake) to be able to su to someone in group1

Ubuntu :: What Is The Group 'users' (gid 100) For

Jan 3, 2011

What is the group 'users' (gid 100) for? It's tempting to use it as a general group for accounts that log in but would that cause a security risk? I've done a search for files owned by this group and there don't appear to be any. Googling the words gives very non-specific results!

Ubuntu :: Get Dockbarx To NOT Group Windows?

Aug 3, 2010

I edit a lot of stuff using GIMP, and tend to have about six windows open at once and I switch between them constantly, but I use dockbarx as my window list and it always groups windows making it harder to choose which window I need, So my question is, Is it possible to stop dockbarx from grouping windows? I looked through the settings in the preferences window, but I couldn't see a setting, I was thinking that I could achieve it by editing some sort of config file, except I don't know how.

Ubuntu :: Empathy Group Chat Over MSN?

Oct 14, 2010

After upgrading to 10.10, the newer Empathy (or possibly telepathy-butterfly) doesn't seem to be allowing me to create a group chat over the MSN network.

It has always been a little cumbersome compared to other clients (open a chat window with one participant, select Coversation | Invite Participant, type in their name, add...repeat for each participant). But now the "Invite Participant" menu item is always disabled. I've tried removing/re-adding my account, rebooting, and a few other things, but no dice. Lots of googling doesn't turn up anything current.

Is anyone else having this issue, or is this isolated to my setup somehow?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Group Windows?

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 and for some reason I can't use tabbed windows. The options for tabbed windows appear to be configured correctly in KDE Settings, but the window menus don't have the option to group windows and the middle click drag doesn't do anything. I use the Bespin window theme, but I switched briefly to Oxygen and had the same problem.

Ubuntu :: Edit Owner / Group Via SSH With GUI?

Feb 14, 2011

In Windows I used WinSCP to do all of my server work. It was easy and intuitive to use. In Ubuntu, I've been recommended to use "sftp://" for the location. I can change folder permission settings this way, but it doesn't allow me to change the owner and group, and doesn't allow to change the file permissions (folder permissions are ok though).

Can anyone point me in the right direction? How do I go about doing this? I'm much more comfortable doing it via GUI rather than terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - LP Group With No Members Not Even Root

Mar 23, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 and have been trying to set up a USB printer. I hit a problem which I eventually diagnosed as being the ownership of /dev/usb/lp0.

First, the symptom:
~$ cat Test > /dev/usb/lp0
bash: /dev/usb/lp0: Permission denied

The initial diagnosis:
~$ ls -l /dev/usb/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 2010-03-23 21:39 /dev/usb/lp0

Notice the lp group? When I checked group properties, this group did not have any members - not even root! The default for CUPS (from the CUPS doc) is lpadmin, in any case, so not sure what lp is all about. In fact, the 'lp' group has ID=0, the same as the 'root' group.

I fixed it by doing this:
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/usb/lp0

Then I noticed that /dev/lp0 and /dev/parport0 also had group=lp, so I also did this:
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/lp*
~$ sudo chown root:lpadmin /dev/parport*

Ubuntu :: Removed User From Sudo Group

Sep 23, 2010

I made a mistake on my friend's Ubuntu system when trying to get hard drive permissions right. I wanted to add a user to a certain group with usermod -G, but without realising I should also use -a, with the result that the user is now not longer in the sudo group. This is the only (regular) user on the system, which means I can not sudo usermod again to get it right. So what to do? The only solution I can think of is using a live disc to restore the group belongings, but I want to know if there's a quicker way. Also, I don't know what more groups the user was in. Is there a history? Or else, what are the default groups?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Group Passwords To Work At All In 10.4?

Sep 29, 2010

I am unable to get group passwords to work at all in 10.4. I set the password for the group and try to `newgrp` in to it, the prompt asks for the password, but always gives me permission denied (even though its set to allow this..": x :"). Is this just not fully supported?

Next, after using `sudo gpasswd -A usr grp`, the user becomes an admin of the group, he can add/remove users only for that grp, but is not a "member". How would I find out who are admins of groups? I have tried `groups`, looking in /etc/group and theres nothing, the user does't even look like hes associated with the group at all.

Ubuntu :: Samba Share With Group Permissions?

Nov 18, 2010

I am trying to set up a Samba share on one of my machines where I am the owner and a special group manages permissions for read-only access ( me:specialgroup ). If I log into the share as me, there is no problem (I have read/write privs as per usual). However, I am not able to log into the share using any of the group members (there is only one currently). That user is not able to access the share (failed to mount).

The folder (which is the share) is owned by me:specialgroup and the permissions have been forced down the folder. Samba is set to Share this folder with no guest or others write access.

Ubuntu Servers :: Changed Group But Can't See The Difference

Jan 19, 2011

I have set up Ubuntu 10.04 and am running it on a VPS. I have everything the way I want it but I have encountered a problem. When I created my user, I did this:

adduser myname

that worked fine, it also assigned me to group called myname, which isn't what i wanted. so i tried to change my group to staff with the following:

sudo usermod -g staff myname

it works fine and i can verify my new group by:

groups myname

and get:

staff

but...now here come the bit I don't understand, when I make a new file/folder and then look at their ownership it is the old group (ie. myname). is this right? shouldn't the ownership of the file now be myname staff? not myname myname.

this is what i did to create a new file, while logged in under myname:

touch a
mkdir da
ls -al
