View 4 Repliesjust a general weirdness, but some folders that are in my /home folder don't show up. if i check "show hidden folders", they still don't show up. for all terms and purposes, they are simply not there. however, if i search for them through the search tool, or beagle, they show up as being in my /home folder. so, anyone have any idea how this happened, or how i can remedy this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm testing HTML5 for the first time, using Firefox (beta) 4.0b8 and SeaMonkey (beta) 2.1b1, and its ignoring some CSS. Specifically, I have problems with the <details> tag. (It is nested in a paragraph...I am using it to provide an in-paragraph definition in hopes it can be toggled.)
Firefox only partly supports <details>. It's not supposed to show anything except the content of <summary>, unless you click on <summary>'s content. Instead, it puts a line break before the content of <details>, splitting the paragraph in two peices (which looks silly), without the "closed/open" functionality.
So I tried using "display:inline" in my CSS, but that gets ignored. Just for fun, I also tried "display:hidden" (also ignored) and "display:none" (obeyed).
SeaMonkey doesn't doesn't do anything special with the content of <display>...but it also ignores the same CSS as Firefox.
The only thing I can do to support semantic design is apply "font-style:italic" to all <details> elements.
Granted, you might ask, "why bother using <details> at all. then?" Well, I would like to have <details> for the browsers that support it, with the "font-style:italic" to degrade the page nicely for those that don't (such as for SeaMonkey).
Does anyone know why "display:inline" and "display:hidden" get ignored?
So I have the burned ubuntu CD, and I'm attempting to install it on a system that has one HDD with XP/Vista on it, and another that is completely formatted and unpartitioned. However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed webdav on my server and I can access it fine through cadaver. However, when I try to access it via nautilus, I get Forbidden. It is NOT secured (SSL). When I try to access it via firefox, I get an error since I DO NOT have "Options Indexes" in my apache config file. If I add this option in, then I can browse the root direction and webdav folder via firefox, but still not from nautilus. what other information you need. I've googled and searched the forums for awhile, but not "solutions" I found have worked for me. I want the webdav folder to just be a single folder within the direction, so this is how I have my config file setup:

As a side-note...when I included "Option Indexes", it allowed me to view the passwd.dav file from firefox!That doesn't seem very good...
I have 1 Drive i.e Z: which is kept hidden in my Windows 7. But its showing in Ubuntu as 250GB Partition. I want to hide that drive from Ubuntu, how can I do that? This is first time i've been using Ubuntu.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust got my VPS provisioned with ubuntu9.04 (64bit) and am trying to get it configured correctly. Part of that means I need sendmail. I've been using aptitude to install software but sendmail is nowhere to be found. Even running 'aptitude install sendmail' results in nothing but "No candidate version found for sendmail". Similar for apt-get.
Suggestions for where to go from here? I wonder what other software might be hidden or not available?

I did some unfortunate dragging I think and now most of my windows which were open before are not there anymore. When I go to processes, I can see that they are still there. E.g. I had a terminal window open and now the window is gone but I can still see a bash process in the list

I used PhotoRec to see what it could recover, it saved them to my home directory. 488 folders I cant do anything with as I don't have permission?? I set up root and gave myself admin power but still cant delete them. If I log in as root, where can I find my home folder so I can delete the majority of these folders. Most unfortunately have nothing of value in them.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm an experienced programmer on other systems, but pretty new to Ubuntu. I'm having trouble with a fresh install of 10.4 Lucid Lynx on an old Pentium III desktop that was working fine with a previous release of Ubuntu. The problem started after an upgrade to 10.4, persisted after doing a clean install from CD, and is still there after installing all recommended updates.
The symptom is that after login, neither the top nor the bottom gnome panels are displayed. I can right-click on the desktop and get the desktop menu, and I can type Alt-F1 and get the left-hand launcher menus, though the top panel still does not display.
The problem does not always occur, but nearly always. The first login to a newly created account will often show the panels, but in subsequent logins the panels are hidden.
If I login in Failsafe GNOME mode, the panels will appear.
I can fix the problem for a given login session by opening gconf-editor, editing /apps/panels/toplevels/top_panel_screen0, and toggling auto_hide on and then off again. If I log out and back in again, the problem recurs. The problem is that I'm trying to set up this computer for some very naive users, so this kind of workaround isn't really practical.
I'm not sure if it matters, but in the Appearance preferences, visual effects are set to "none".
how I might get the gnome panels to appear reliably?
How can I change those heavy black dots that are generated in the hidden password field to asterisks? I have looked in gconf-editor but haven't run across it. Or maybe it's in a totally different place?

Also, it does tend to get in the way a bit, such as obscuring my options button in Chrome, rather than just taking up a bit of unused space on my tabs bar. When i hold shift on boot, nothing happens. When i hold esc, my computer starts beeping like mad if i hold it too soon, but if i hold it later, it just goes to the windows boot thing and reboots. So.. is there anything i can do other than downloading the whole OS again and making a live CD? (don't have the old one anymore)

View 3 Replies View RelatedTrying to convert from Slackware and on a less than 8 yr old gateway installed 10.04. My wireless network is hidden. Logs of the wireless router show dchp requests from xxx.xxx.xxx.45 and the associated offer back. I am assuming xxx.45 is the gateway box.When I open a terminal on the gateway box ifconfig shows the wlan0 to have the proper mac address of the usb wireless stick (intel).
I assume the proper drivers have been loaded as the mac address is recognized; I inputted the proper wep key as an address is offered by the router. Yet no internet connection. Am prepared to use the terminal [as gui screens don't seem to work] to change some file's wireless configuration setting but don't know where to look with Ubuntu.
After finishing with an email account I can only close it and open something else by logging out. This was not the case when I first installed K10.04 LTS. I have the same situation with OO Writer.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI was installing Ubuntu on my new laptop (with plans to dual boot with Win 7) and, I'll admit, I did something stupid. You see, there was a 1 meg free space before the Windows 7 'hidden partition' and it was driving me nuts. So, what I did, was use gparted to move the hidden partition to the start of the drive (yes, a 1 meg move). Install of Ubuntu went off without a hitch, but after reboot things went a bit differently. The Recovery partition shows up as a possible boot partition in GRUB, in Windows 7 I can now see the recovery partition as a normal NTFS drive, and I can no longer use the features that the partition gives. I know this might be more of a 'ask on a Windows forum' question, but I was hoping someone else had done something like this and knew how to restore the hidden partition to being, well, hidden.

It might be helpful to others.My wireless router is set up as a "hidden network". That is, it doesn't broadcast the SSID to prevent hackers. My laptop connected fine under Windows, but not Ubuntu.Lots of posts told me to do stuff in the Network Manager. I tried, but I couldn't find the right settings. It turns out there are *TWO* different programs that control the network settings. I was using the wrong one.
To get to one of them you go to System/Preferences/Network Connections. This program is *NOT* Network Manager. Whatever I tried to set up in this program, I could not get a working connection. The other program, the *REAL* Network Manager, is a different program altogether. You get to it by clicking the network icon at the top right corner of the screen. The problem is you can barely see it if the network is not working. When the network is down, all you can see is a tiny greyed out triangle. That's the thing you have to click. After I clicked this and followed the steps under "Connect to a hidden network".
I would like see to the boot menu which is hidden by default on Ubuntu 10.04.

View 4 Replies View RelatedActually, Nautilus allows two instances of the same folder, or two folders with the same name in the same directory, as long as one is hidden (with the .prefix) and the other is shown. It happens that, if during a download (through a download manager or a torrent client) the user adds the . prefix to the download folder, another will be automatically created by the application (let's say Transmission for example) and the download would continue to that new folder. If any renaming happens (or if the original folder is restored), the download will resume to the folder with whichever initial name. Eventually, the user will be left with an unusable/corrupt complete download.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an external HDD which i keep all my movies and tv shows and whatnot on. I rebooted my laptop routinely and when the HDD reconnected it still has the same amount of disc space used up but in my movie folder only 221/1186 movies are showing up in nautilus. I opened KDirStat to check and all the movies are still on the HDD nothing has been erased. I have restarted the laptop, restarted the HDD, disconnected/reconnected the HDD, swapped USB ports. I don't think it matters but I have written a .sh script that generates a list of all the folders contents and outputs it to a .txt file. Even though the HDD is only showing 221 files the txt output has all 1186. why 800 files would just not show up in nautilus explorer?
Currently running:
Ubuntu 9.10
Nautilus 1:2.28.10ubuntu3
EDIT: I can still access and play every file that is not showing up by opening them through a media player such as VLC. Also when i Alt+F2 and type the directory and file name they still fill themselves in as normal also.
