Ubuntu :: Empathy - Friends Do Not See Me Online
Sep 29, 2010
None of my MSN friends are able to see me online when I used Empathy. I can see them fine, and we can talk to each other, but whenever I am signed in, my friends will always see me as offline, even though my status is set to available. I figured out why they couldn't see me. It turns out all of my contacts were blocked. Is there any reason why this would happen?

After moving from 9.04 to 10.04, the single most annoying issue for me is Empathy. Yes, it doesn't pop up a new window when a new message arrives. Yes I missed few messages because of that (no, turning the small "mail" icon to green doesn't get my attention as much as a new window). But, I can live with this.
The real issue for me is it shows Offline contacts as Online. Let's start Empathy and let's say you have 10 contacts as Online. If one of them goes Offline, Empathy still shows the contact as online. You will only find this out when you try to send a message.

i have a lan network in my school that doesnt allow conection to the Internet.
looking for a chat program that would let me (ubuntu10.10) contact other windows users on the network, i found that Pidgin and Bonjour do the trick.
however i could not find a way to chat with several people at a time (eg. create a chat-room). is this a fault of bonjour? is there a different program that can do this?

I am looking for a software package that will allow me to enter lots of text (ramblings) and lots of pictures (albums). I want to then invite friends to look. This would be through their email.

I have four home computers (linux) that I can easily access using Remote Desktop Viewer. Two of the computers have Windows partitions with UltraVNC installed and I can access them without a problem.
However when I try to access a friends Windows computer in another part of the state I fail. I have researched the issue at length and it appears to be as simple as it is in my home situation the exception being I need to use the external IP address of the other computer but when I try I get a message saying the computer I am trying to access is closed, (the other computer is turned on) UltraVNC is used on the other computer and it has a dynamic IP address which I am updated with. I have checked the Windows firewall and it will allow VNC and we have tried it with the anti-virus disabled just in case that firewall was causing an issue. Lastly, remote access has been activated on the Windows computer. Can't think of anything else to mention,

You can find this bug here: [URL]and here: [URL]
Sometimes Empathy is not sending my messages to my contacts on MSN. There are no warning messages of this, so it's really annoying. I have to disconnect and reconnect to MSN to resolve the issue. After the bug occurs no message is sent to that contact, but I can communicate with others.
In my case I see no correlation between the length of the message and the bug occurring, it seems to appear randomly.
I am using Empathy 2.30.0.1 on Ubunutu 10.04 RC

i've never been able to use empathy.for some reason, i just can't add accounts.i've messed with it a lot in karmic, but gave up. running lucid now and added a profile for my wife. interestingly, she has no problems using empathy so i think there must be something going on with my settings.i've searched and searched and removed everything i could find that was empathy-related, but no luck.

I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I am trying to connect to IRC (freenode) using Empathy. When I try to add a new account, IRC does not show up in the list of "kind of chat account". I'll attach a screenshot of what I see. I have the telepathy-idle package installed.

To get sip support in empathy you have to run.
Code:
sudo apt-get install telepathy-sofiasip
But i could not get my account to work.
I already have a ekiga.net account working in Ekiga. So i know my account is correct.

I've been trying to stomach Empathy's emoticons for a while now but I don't think I can take them anymore; I just find them #*^$@-n' creepy. As far as I can tell, there isn't a slick way to customize this, but does anyone know where to go under the hood in this program?

I'm having problems with the Empathy MSN on Ubuntu 10.10.I have searched the web but haven't found anything particular about this.I'm trying to log in but it stays on "Connecting" forever, doesn't go anywhere else. But it's still logging in, how do I know that? When I'm on msn on my other computer (which runs W7) and I try to log in into Empathy, I get signed out from my W7 MSN. This happens because I happen to log in from another place. In this case, that means that Empathy is logging me in, but it's still stucks on "Connection".

I have Empathy set to start when I login, and when I turn off my computer, it is always still running. I also usually have Evolution, Liferea, and Rhythmbox running. All of these applications usually work fine the next day when I turn on my computer. However, for the last few days, Empathy has been starting without a menu bar. In one instance, Rhythmbox was also menubar-less. Now, Empathy is always without a menu bar. If I ever need the menu bar, I have to restart Empathy. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I am unable to provide a terminal output since this application starts up with my computer. I have provided a screenshot of Empathy. I think I have a faint idea of why Empathy is without a menu bar. I read something somewhere about an XML file that contained the menu bar contents. I think that since I shut off my computer without closing these applications, that file has been corrupted. I have no idea why everything works fine once I restart Empathy, though. If you cannot answer this question, perhaps you could tell me if it is safe to shutdown Ubuntu with applications still running. In OS X, it will automatically tell your applications to quit safely, then turn of the computer. I hope Ubuntu doesn't just force quit any open applications. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit with the latest updates. I am using Empathy 2.26.1.

i got my facebook chat working in empathy, but for some reason i can not add my friends from this protocol into a custom group. I have my gmail contacts in a group, and my aim buddies in a group, allowing them to be minimized, but i cannot get my facebook friends to go into a facebook group for some reason. I can right click the friend, and create a new group called "Facebook", but the friend will not move to the group when i hit close.

Hello, when I log into Aim using pidgin I get this error
"Received unexpected response from http://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession"
I tried using a MSN account to test it out and it works. So AIM does not work. The port is on 5190 so I dont understand what is wrong.

I know how to do so in pidgin - there was a specific directory in ur homedir which u could go to to back things up. But where is this in empathy? Let's say i want to reinstall. Or shift to another machine. What happens then?
(Note: I've tried searching the forums already with "empathy backup". Not much luck there. Also looked at [URL]

I don't like having to click twice to do what I had happen automatically in Pidgin - that is, open up my new messages in Empathy. It's just cumbersome - is there any hack or option for this, or should I merely go back to Pidgin for now? I really like Empathy, but this is just annoying.
