Can we simply delete all partiitions on the IDE hard drive and reformat or will this cause problems? 2 Is the write-speed gain worth switching the drives out, putting the Ubuntu drive in my IDE slot and my freshly wiped drive on the USB adapter?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 / Win XP SP3 Dual Disk Dual Boot

Jun 5, 2010

I am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.

I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components. My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

Fedora :: Dual Monitor / Dual Workspace?

Apr 23, 2011

I am attempting to use dual monitors in Fedora 14 using an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card (not that I think that has anything to do with anything, but who knows), and want it to where my second monitor is its own virtual workspace so that I can switch between my other workspaces on my original monitor without switching the workspace on the second monitor. This way, I can watch movies or what-not on my TV (2nd monitor) while working on my original monitor. The only thing I found that was even close was setting the 2nd monitor up on it's on x server, which I don't want to do. Also, as it is now, I have my panel on my original monitor, but the windows do not see it when I have it aligned on the right (the windows don't adjust their size to account for the fact that it is there). I know a way I can do a work-around for this, but I would like to know if there is a "correct" way to do this. I know I can tell the movie player to show on all workspaces and have it on the 2nd monitor.

Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Error On /boot With Dual Boot On Dual Disk

Dec 30, 2010

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.

I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Code:
Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot

If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.

My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.

I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).

This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.

Ubuntu :: Dual Booting 64 With XP 32?

Dec 8, 2010

I currently have a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu 10.04 32bit.I need to do a complete reinstall of the XP and am thinking that this would be a good time to transfer Ubuntu to a bigger drive and maybe install the 64bit version. My computer is a few years old but the Core Duo should be able to handle 64bit.

I am wondering though that since I have an old printer, scanner, web cam, etc. whether I would have problems with my system running 64bit. I am also concerned as to whether the software in the library would work properly (if they are not 64bit).There is no pressing reason for me to run 64bit except curiosity so if it will cause problems I can wait.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Dual Monitors

Apr 21, 2011

I have an asus p5kpl-cm MB. I plugged in a radeon 9200 pci card. In the bios, I can set up:

pci/igd
igd/pci
igd

etc.

This determines which of the 2 displays (pci card or internal graphics on the MB) is the boot display. That determines which comes up with the bios screen and then once booted into ubuntu (10.04), this is the only adapter/monitor seen. The button detect monitors doesn't do anything.

lspci sees both my internal and pci card graphics. So, I can get either to work just fine (auto detected etc.) just not both at the same time.

I've tried all of the 3 above settings, and even when I set it to just igd, lspci still sees both my adapters. It identifies them correctly, and it works perfectly, detecting the monitor and knows the resolutions for each - just not both at the same time.

Does ubuntu know how to automatically configure more than one display w/o doing something else, or must I do something else to get both going together?

Code:
$ lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express DRAM Controller (rev 10)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10)

Ubuntu :: Cannot Dual-Boot Into Win XP

Nov 4, 2009

I have a Win XP machine, with two HDDs. First HDD is partitioned into 4 drives, C: contains Win XP. Second HDD is partitioned into 3 drives, no OS. All partitions are NTFS. I installed the Linux Mint 7 Gloria RC1 on the first partition of the second HDD. While doing it, I split the partition into two, the first part containing the root filesystem and the second part being the swap area.

Set up my user account and proceeded with the installation. After the installation completed successfully, removed the CD and pressed Enter. The system restarted and the GRUB 1.5 boot menu appeared. The first four choices refer to Mint 7 Gloria, and the last option, under Other Operating Systems, is Win XP. My problem is I am unable to change the options. The default option is the Mint 7 Gloria (option 0), and I can't seem to be able to change it in any way. By using cursor keys or mouse, the selection never moves. As a result, after 10 seconds, the PC boots into Mint 7 Gloria.

Now, after spending some time I assigned a password to the root account, logged as root and then edited the menu.lst file (filename may be incorrect here), to change the time interval before booting to 30 seconds. Rebooted and verified the change had the desired effect. Again logged in as root, opened the same file and changed the default value to 4 (which is Win XP). Restarted the machine. This time the GRUB bootloader correctly boots into Win XP.

I am unable to change the default selection in the GRUB bootloader screen. If it's any help, I am using a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, which connect to the PC through a USB dongle. However, I am able to edit the BIOS settings comfortably using the keyboard, (and also the keyboard/mouse work perfectly once Mint 7 Gloria is booted), so I am thinking it may not be the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Get Rid Of Dual Boot

Jan 1, 2010

I bought a new computer recently (Acer), and it came with Windows 7 (Home Premium, 64bit) pre-installed. I'd been using Ubuntu for a year or so, and I liked that and wanted to keep using it, but since I paid for the Windows it seemed stupid to just get rid of it altogether, so I decided to dual boot. So I installed Karmic Koala next to Windows and everything went fine.

Now, a couple of months later, I realised I had been using Windows almost exclusively after all (sorry, free software! I love you but I couldn't stay faithful), and I decided to stop dual booting. After all, I could use the extra drive space and it would be nice to skip the GRUB screen when booting the computer. I did some googling and found out it should be a pretty straightforward process, with the installation disk. No problem, I thought, since I made the recovery disks on the blank dvd-rs that came with the computer straight after I got it.

So I deleted the ubuntu partition, and went for a clean new install with the recovery disks. The disks turned out to be some Acer-made variety of a windows installation disk, but I (foolishly) thought that shouldn't make much difference, and clicked "repair system". It went fine, until the installation was complete and windows said the computer had to be restarted to finish. Ever since then, nothing has gone right.

The computer just won't boot. I get "grub rescue" prompts. I can boot from the ubuntu cd or the windows recovery disk, and I've re-installed both OS-es a few times, but the problems remain. I can get into ubuntu fine, but when I try to re-install windows, the problems start again: either the aforementioned "grub rescue" prompt, or it just keeps re-starting and re-starting, claiming there is "no medium".

Because I have problems with Ubuntu accessing network I would just like to remove Ubuntu from this PC and then assign disk space to Windows.

Is it save to only delete Ubuntu partitions, ext4 partition and swap partition, from disk using Gparted tool? I am afraid that Grub will also be deleted and so I would be unable to boot into Windows XP.

Ubuntu Installation :: Want To Dual-boot 9.10 And XP

Jan 29, 2010

I have made myself a Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (32-bit) CD, which I want to dual-boot with my current XP Pro 32-bit on my HP laptop. But for some reason HP made two additional partitions on my hard drive (one labeled "HP Tools" and listed as a System partition in the Disk Management, even though it doesn't have anything on it). I can't see anything (even with "show hidden items" enabled) on either of these extra partitions, at least not that I know about; so I'm wondering if they're system folders that I need to keep, or can I safely delete them?

Another question was, I have read here that you need to make a "Swap Partition" when installing Ubuntu, but I've also read (can't remember for sure, think it was here) that you only need to make the Swap Partition if you're going to be making the machine Hibernate. Can somebody set me straight here?

My last question was, when I actually install Ubuntu, how do I go about getting some of the drivers for my hardware, so I can actually enable my wireless on Ubuntu to get the updates and software and all that?
