I recently upgraded my 10.04 installation to 10.10 and ever since my dual monitor set-up has been behaving oddly - my secondary monitor randomly goes black for a second and then comes back as normal. I've tried to reproduce it with no luck and it isn't something I experienced with previous installations so wondered whether it's a known problem with 10.10? NVidia Quadro NVS 290

Radeon 9250 AGP (have 2 of them) - with open source ATI driver
Geforce 6200 PCIE - with nouveau driver
In all cases I connect 2 LCDs. one 1440x900 or 1680x1050 to DVI and one 1280x1024 to VGA (all the cards have DVI and VGA out). The LCDs are the same ones tested with all cards :
1440x900 : Benq FP-92W
1680x1050 : Teac T2005L15 (identified as KTC2002 in xorg)
1280x1024 : Proview PQ-721KP
Tried on different boxes runnning Arch linux, different kernel / x / drivers / kde versions
Problem is - in all those setups, one monitor allways randomly blanks for a split second and comes back (incl. switching of the backlight, and displaying the "Source : VGA" or "Source : DVI" title as if it was switched off and on)
This happens randomly, but (more pronounced with the ATI cards) related to me clicking on stuff or the display changing (even if the changes are on the second screen)
With the Radeons only the monitor connected to DVI blanks. And the 2 radeons do it in different frequency, one is more often and one less
With the Geforce only the monitor connected to VGA blanks
When I test with 1 monitor (other one disabled in xorg) : Radeons sometimes still do that to DVI monitor but rare (much less than with VGA connected) (VGA monitor never blanks). Geforce does not do it at all and has problem only when 2 monitors are connected
I first thought its a hardware issue (the cards are from junk), but it happens the same with totally different hardware (exceps using same monitors) so i no longer think it is
There is nothing interesting in Xorg.0.log
I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

The Mirror Screen was working fine, but then I uncheck the mirror screen option, both my laptop and my secondary monitor black out. I can only see the mouse, and it cans move on both screen.

I have both Computer and Display set to NEVER SLEEP in power management. yet after about five minutes of inactivity, Ubuntu always blanks out the screen (i.e., just a black monitor screen but the monitor power light is still on).How do I stop this? I want to continue to see what is on my desktop--I do not want the screen to blank out ever.

How to setup in fedora, so I can have both monitor display same screen, with respect of their resolution? When I click "MIrror displays" the resolution gets messed up. I want to use my monitor for the main use and close the lid of the laptop.
I have disabled power management and un-installed gnome-screen-saver and themes. But the screen keeps going black, and it don't go into power-save. Exactly as if the screen-saver was present. Can it be xdg-utils ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running a wee Aspire One, 1024*600 with an external monitor 1024*768 (maverick desktop edition- 10.10) I have them set up independently, the external is to the right, and above my aspire. I have set this up in the monitors options. But it seems the desktop environment (although not the backgrounds) extend off to the right of my aspire (under the external) and to the left of my external- (above my aspire).
I know that it may be nit-picking, but it is a right pain when I 'loose' stuff on this phantom desktop space. For example- when i move my cursor into one of these spaces- and have to wiggle it about till it pops onto one of the screens. Also- i'd like my screensaver to pop up on both screens, and span them both- not just be repeated on both...
10.04 32bit Desktop edition. I have unchecked the "Enable screensaver when the computer is idle" option and have set "put display to sleep when inactive for" to "Never" but the display is still blanking out!

This is no problem with KDE but before X is started and when X ends there are big issues with the TTY0 console being distorted.
Is it possible to disable the second monitor when X is not running?

I've played around with a second monitor, but so far I haven't found a satisfying solution. I am using a laptop with a GeForce 9600M GS graphics card. I have managed to set up twinview, but my monitors don't have the same height so I'd rather have something like the "seperate x screen" option. Or how I imagine that option would be like. After some problems with the nvidia configuration tool (I couldn't change the xorg.conf, until I read this: [URL] I now have two separate screens, but the second one is all empty, with black background and X-shaped mouse cursor.
There seems to be no window manager running, I can start programs there with -display :0.1 , but they don't get any frame decoration and, which is worse, no keyboard focus. I'd be fine with a fullscreen konsole there, so I don't really need a window manager, but I do need access from the keyboard. I'd prefer a setup that would allow me to easily (without editing xorg.conf) switch between using both monitors and using only one, because I don't always use the laptop at home.
I'm using dual-screen output with KDE 4.4 on my laptop. Is it possible to have the KDE panel on the external monitor if attached and back on the laptop's LCD panel as soon as the monitor is disconnected?
It seems that Plasma prefers the built-in LCD even if an external monitor is connected. I tried various settings with xrandr and also in the System Settings but none of them helped. The only way to move the KDE panel to the external screen is to disable the built-in LCD.
What I would basically like to do is to use the external monitor as primary in the office and the laptop LCD next to it as a second screen. When I'm traveling I'd like to use only the laptop LCD.
Is there also a nice way to switch between the screens? On the Internet I found a script for the "screen switch" key for IBM Thinkpad and modified it to work on my Dell. But it would be nice to have this also automatic: autodetect the monitor attachment/removal and perform a configured action. The KRandr doesn't seem to have such a feature. Is there anything I could use?
My system is: Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE 4.4 upgrade. Hardware: Dell Inspiron 1545 with Intel GM45 card.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 w/ an ATI HD 4350 and trying to output to a CRT television over S-Video @ 640x480. Problem is the screen blanks out after ten minutes no matter how I configure my screensaver or power management settings. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just rebuilt my fedora box and I'm having some problems getting dual monitors to work. First, I can't reposition my secondary monitor to be on the left. It thinks it's on the right. I can use xrandr to fix this, but that is annoying. Is there no way to do this in the display properties? Second, maximizing a window makes it go across all screens. I unchecked this option in the display properties.I also unchecked the one for letting windows be in multiple monitors at once, but this still happens.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').
Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.
The X server in Debian seems to have a "funny" habit to suddenly start blanking the screen if I don't touch the mouse or the keyboard for a while, although I've used the xset command (xset -dpms s off) in my ~/.xinitrc to tell Xorg specifically NOT to blank the screen. I know how to disable screen blanking in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I'd rather not have the xorg.conf file at all.
So, I'd be interested to hear your suggestions about how to disable the Xorg screen blanking without using the xset command or the xorg.conf file. Is there some other file in /etc/X11/ that I could tweak to disable this highly annoying desire of Xorg to insist on blanking my screen after a bit of idle time?
How do I stop the display from turning off? In 'System Settings/Screen', I can only choose from a preset range of minutes - there is no option to disable it. Very annoying when watching a 90 minute movie, for instance. At least under FC14 I had the disable option. I tried unchecking Power Manager in gnome-session-properties, but that disabled the system from suspending when the laptop lid is closed and might have other ramifications as well. I tried disabling Screensaver in gnome-session-properties, but 'System Settings/Screen' still showed up with the same options, so it appears to be unrelated. Anyway, I suspect this is a power management issue, not a screensaver issue.

I recently installed Mint 9 using/trying KDE, which I found very intuitive and feature-rich. However, a snag soon appeared. The screen started to blank every few seconds or minute. This is pretty annoying. I have so far tried every tried-and-tested means available, exhaustively, to no avail. Even their website has this as a known issue, yet the solution (i.e. configuring the screen resolution) doesn't seem to work for me.

I'm running 5.3_x86-64 and I'm using the nVidia drivers direct from nVidia called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.13-pkg2.run.
So far, I'm added DPMS off in /etc/xorg.conf, removed all the screensaver packages and all the power management packagesbut the screen is still going blank after a time of inactivity.What else do I need to do? I've just installed 12 new Dell Optiplex 960 computers with Dell 2009W monitors. They are identical hardware and OS installs. Some of them are exhibiting a weird problem with their screens: They boot up and run just fine, but then the monitor goes black for 2 or 3 seconds, and comes back, with the small DVI icon popping up in the upper left corner to show which video connection is active. This repeats at random intervals continously; sometimes just a few seconds between, and sometimes many minutes.
The problem initially happened on just one machine so I had Dell swap the motherboard thinking it was a hardware issue. That did not fix it. Soon after that, I got reports from several users of the same problem on other of the new machines.
I've done a very basic install of CentOS 5.5, skipping all of my local configuration management stuff, and it still happens. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and over the last few hours the machine has been rock solid. No video issues at all.

I'm a newbie to installing LINUX (was an Oracle DBA for many years) and I am having trouble getting the dual head function to work with my Sony Vaio laptop. I just select a generic LCD with the screen resolution that I want, but when I startx, I briefly get the login window (terminal), then everything goes blank and I have to unplus the samsung monitor and reboot to be able to have a screen again. I have tried the fn + f keys and that doesn't help.

I'm trying to prevent GDM/Gnome from turning the screen off prior to login. It's current behavior, under 3.14, slowly fades the screen out and then enters DPMS mode after 10 minutes.I have zeroed out the following dconf settings, under both root and user, but the default behavior persists.

How do I change the screen blanking behavior on Linux virtual terminals?
For example, if I switch to a VT from X, login, and leave the system alone for 5 minutes or so, the screen will blank like a screensaver. It comes back with any keypress, like a screensaver.
Mostly I just want to change the timeout, but I'm also interested in other settings.
If it helps, one of my systems is running Ubuntu 10.04 with the stock graphics drivers. fbset shows the console using the radeondrmfb framebuffer device.
