View 9 Repliesi have all my personal data in a separated partition that is xfs, I chose that fstype cause I want to encrypt the data, so, my question is:
1. what steps i have to follow to encrypt all data in that partition?
2. how the process work? everytime I logon the data should be decrypted? when logoff the data will be encrypted? this process is managed by kernel?
I don't have clear the way the XFS and the encryption works, so, I you have some urls o howtos are welcome
Lately i just reformatted my laptop again and created a encrypted home drive using the default. It prompt for my password and then i key it into the terminal. Then the terminal closed it.How to justify that the home drive is encrypted and decrypted during login?Beside that,if it is encrypted and what kinda extension is drive gonna?Apart from that,i used cryptkeeper to create a encrypted folder. How do i know if the folder is encrypted beside it prompt for me to enter my password?
View 7 Replies View Relatedmy CPU passed away, got a new system, installed a new 9.04 and blew it up to studio. have 2 new disks and my old raid 0 lvm. mounted is ( lvdisplay) , user rights fixed fine. I do have my old login name and passwd in a book. How can I open the data it was the old encrypted home directory. I have an icon "Acess your private Data" and something called link to Acess Your private data. There I can read link (broken) so the broke link is sorted out, as i do have now a directory in my home with the same name as it has been, /home/coconews/ and that is fine
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently used Dj Dup for the first time. I chose to backup my home folder and most dot folders (do most of you backup all your home dir dot folders?). Even though Dj Dup uses gpg, is there any sensitive data stored in dot folders within my home directory?
BTW, I did an incremental backup up to an older Dj Dup backup folder on my NTSF external HDD and got an error. Is this because it is NTFS? I then did an incremental backup to a backup folder on my PC (ext4) and got no error. In the picture attached, would that setting mean the backup will continue to grow to a huge size? Would it be better to keep backups for a week?
I had a student, and she has done some work on her account on my lab computer, but has left the country and is un-contactable.
I have full administrator privileges for this machine, and it is running Ubuntu LTS 10.04
She has a folder which was copied from a windows formatted external hard drive (Probably NTFS) onto her home partition on my machine.
I can open all of her files, except for those in this folder.
As I see it the problem is either something to do with the permissions of the files (coming from NTFS), or some kind of Ubuntu security that I am unaware of?
Here are my attempts to open it code...
I am running ubuntu 11.04 I'd like to encrypt my home folder. - how can it be done, without creating new user/starting from scratch. -I'd like to keep all the files and desktop settings - the only change should be that the folder is encrypted now.

View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.10 32 bit/ and /storage are on two different partitions. I want to move my home directory to the /storage partition, so I went to System -> Administration -> Users and Groups then Advanced Settings then the Advanced tab. I changed Home Directory from /home/billy to /storage/home/billy. I click on ok and I'm asked if I want to copy all the user's files over to the new location or start fresh. I click, Copy Files. It acts like it's doing something, but all it does is create the home/billy directories inside /storage, but it never copies files over and the next time I go to /home/billy it's still in the old location. What the heck is the deal?

Goggling the problem - references to an .ICEauthority in my home directory are mentioned as linked to this problem. However "ls -la /home/charles" reveals that there is no .ICEauthority file present.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just recently bought a second hand netbook (HP Mini Mi 110) from ebay which use linux ubuntu as OS. I changed the previous username to mine but when i tried to login again...this warning pop out "your home directory is listed as: '/home/mazlin' but it does not appear to exist. Do you want to log in with the /(root) directory as you home directory? It is unlikely anything will work unless you use a failsafe session" so i click yes. then...
user's $HOME/.drmc file is being ignored. This prevents the default session and language from being saved. File should be owned by user and have 644 permissions. user's $HOME directory must be owned by user and not writable by other users. next i click OK, then... your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. if you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of diskspace. try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem. when i click ok, the login screen reappear again... how to use failsafe sessions.
I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
I am getting the following error. But when I checked under what login I am, it gives me my name. I checked /home directory and /export/home/ but I do not have a folder with my username.

Accidently ran rm -rf while the pwd was /home/user-name
Now I'm unable to run any command whatsoever as root, ls,vi,cnf whatever, they don't work.
However the commands work as normal user.
I can guess that the files with root ownership in the home folder were deleted but I would like to revert everything back to normal and would like to know how to solve this problem.
I have added a new user by following command :
root# useradd -u 100 -g 120 -d /product -s /bin/bash sandesh
I am not able to access it in /export/home directory..?
I'm not able to create Samba Account. it is showing the error message as below
Failed to initialise SAM_ACCOUNT for user <username>. Does this user exist in the UNIX password database ?
Failed to modify password entry for user <username>
Unix accounts are created in Corporate Office, which is in US. We had a dedicated link from our office to US office. Now this link has been disconnected & now we have a VPN connection through internet to US Office. there is a firewall on both the sides. While creating samba account i tried to give netstat command & i saw it is trying to make a connection to the Unix Server at US, but the connection is not getting established it is showing SYN_SENT.
The port from the Home directory server trying to connect to the Unix server is connecting using Dynamic port but the Unix server port it is showing as PORTMAP. Network guys are not opening all the ports in the firewall. Kindly let me know the DESTINATION PORT that the home directory server is trying to connect to Unix Server, so that i can ask my network guys to open that perticular port. So that i can create Samba account to the users.

Using ubuntu 9.10 cd to access laptops hard drive.

opened with openoffice. THIS DIRECTORY HAS BEEN UNMOUNTED TO PROTECT YOUR DATA.
From the graphical desktop, click on: "Access Your Private Data"
or
From the command line, run: $ ecryptfs-mount-private
So I tried a couple of ways...
Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.
When i am adding a user using "useradd -d /home/test test" or "useradd test", it is now creating the home directory, whereas when i am using the graphical mode and going through several menu options, i am getting the home directory.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to specify a different path to home directories on a particular server than what LDAP contains for the users, besides using a symlink. E.g. "/Users/jdoe" vs "/home/jdoe" I don't want to change the actual LDAP attributes, just want a particular server to point them in the right direction (Ubuntu 10.04).
I'm assuming it's something I could probably set in pam configurations?
I have a strange problem when I do SSH to a FEDORA9 based Linux Server.
[Code]....
When I login using "adah" username in TELNET I am automatically directed to my home directory at location "/media/disk-1/home/adah". But when I use SSH to login using the same username I get the following message Code: Could not chdir to home directory /home/adahaj: Permission denied
I have a secondary disk which holds a /home directory structure from a previous install of Linux. I installed a new version on a new primary drive and mounted this secondary drive as the new /home. Problem is, even though the users are the same names and I can access the home directories for the users, I cannot login directly to their home directories, as I get the following error: -
Code:
login as: [me]
[me]@[machine]'s password:
Last login: Wed Jan 6 18:34:33 2010 from [machine]
Could not chdir to home directory /home/[me]: Permission denied
[[me]@[machine] /]$
Now, since the usernames are correct and the users are in the passwd file with the correct home directory paths, could it be user ID's that are different or something else? It's not as though I cannot access the home directories for the users, simply that I cannot log directly into them from a login prompt.
Is there anything special about a home directory before users' home directories are stored there, or is just as typical as any other "empty" folder?Let me just cut to the chase, but please no ear ringing about the folly of messing around as root, particularly with directories at root level. I know it's considered stupidity, but I deleted my home directory.
Is there an easy way to restore a working home directory? I tried copying /etc/skel under root, but I'm not sure what a home directory should look like once it has been restored. Besides . & .., there were .screenrc & .xsession in my home directory when I copied /etc/skel. Are these files suppose to be in "/home" or "/home/~" or both?
I have Ubuntu Karmic. I chose to install with an encrypted home directory. Recently I got a warning that I only had 2GB of drive space left. This is mostly because of my videos. So I went and bought a new hard drive and partitioned it and made 1 ext4 partition and copied my videos all to the new hard drive. I added a line in my fstab to mount the new hard drive to ~/videos, but when I reboot the computer, there is a screen saying something like "error mounting /home/me/videos, press S to skip or something else to reboot". If I press S to skip, then when my system comes up there is a video directory but it's empty because my other hard drive didn't get mounted. I can run sudo mount /dev/sdb video/ and it will mount fine and I can see all my videos, so why can't fstab mount it? Does this have something to do with my encrypted home directory?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.
I'm using Mac OS X's Terminal.app shell to compile and run Fortran programs. One such program resides outside of my home directory (it is in the Applications folder, which resides on my hard drive but seems to be outside of my home folder). How can I navigate into this directory using Terminal.app to run the programs that reside there?
View 7 Replies View Relatedi was wondering if there was a way to sync two computers so that all the data in the /home directory was exactly the same on both, and it was done automatically as soon as theyre both turned on and connected to the same network?
i have a laptop and a desktop that i want to basically mirror each other.
i take my laptop everywhere, so i want to be able to do work on it, take it home, turn on my desktop and as soon as my laptop is connected to the network, it'll automatically sync the files to the desktop.
i want the reverse to also occur - meaning i do some work on the desktop and have it automatically sync up to my laptop while im working on the desktop if the laptop is on at the same time, or as soon as i turn the laptop on.
i had rsync set up before, but i had to initiate it manually, and i was never sure if it was overwriting files or appending.
so, after long time of succesfull use of kubuntu, i encountered a 1st major disaster yesterday while using kphotoalbum. It has somehow frozen my machine in so mighty way, that it apparently corrupted a directory with majority of my pictures , which now appears to be empty .My home lies on a separate partition, its encrypted aand using btrfs and I am using kubuntu 10.10. So, could anyone give me some clues how to unencrypt my home partition, that i could obtain an image of partition or whatever else usable for photorec to check for pictures?
