Ubuntu :: Could Not Find "/home/oded/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/~/.gnome2"

Oct 12, 2010

In past releases, entering the "~" operator in the location bar, nautilus would interpret it as "/home/$USER" but as of 10.10 I get an error saying:

Code:

Could not find "/home/oded/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts/~/.gnome2".

I'm running nautilus-elementary but this behavior also occurred in the default nautilus app that shipped with 10.10

Ubuntu :: Finding A Gnome2 Globalmenu Ppa For Natty?

May 1, 2011

Basically as the thread tittle suggests, I've got Xubuntu 11.04 installed as I didn't take to Unity. However one thing I really did like was the global menu. Back in 10.10, I installed GlobalMenu from a webupd8 ppa, Worked like a charm. However under xubuntu 11.04, that ppa doesn't seem to work, and I don't like the look of compiling from source, as all the instructions call for installing xfce4 panel, which obviously I already have, and I have no idea what else I have of those lib's. All this is intended to run in xfapplet, so hopefully I'm not being silly and trying to run something somewhere where it won't run.

Ubuntu :: Focus Follows Mouse With Natty And Gnome2?

Jul 5, 2011

I'm using the ubuntu-classic + compiz desktop with 11.04. However, compared to older versions the behaviour of focus-follows-mouse seems to have changed for the worse when using the keyboard to switch applications. In older versions, an app selected using alt-tab or scale or similar keyboard method would get focus, even if the mouse was not over it. Focus follows-mouse behaviour would only happen again if you moved the mouse to a new app. In 11.04, the app selected using alt-tab immediately loses focus if the mouse is not over it. This makes alt-tab kinda useless Is there any way I can fix this behaviour to the pre-11.04 version?

Ubuntu Installation :: Does The Natty Upgrade Replace Gnome2 With Unity

Apr 28, 2011

If I just upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04, will it replace gnome with unity? I tried unity before and it is not satifying because it is not customizable, I feel I have less options and less power over what my interface looks like and how it behaves. Same case with gnome3.I'm wondering if when I upgrade to Naughty will I have to go through a lot of messing around with packages and configuration files to get back to gnome2 ? Do we have an option when we upgrade to choose between Unity, Gnome2 and Gnome3?

Debian Multimedia :: Use Gnome2 Screen Completely Freezes

May 1, 2011

when Gnome starts my Desktop completely freezes. So I decided to reinstall and install Gnome2. When Debian is freshly installed I still need to configure and install my ATI 6950 Graphic card and the X config. Since the latest drivers from ATI I can use the --initial config from ATI. This all seems to work. But also when I use Gnome2 my screen completely freezes. I don't see any special things in my logs. I do remember that with my previous PC I had the same problem. This was the "first" reason why I left Debian for my desktop.

Software :: No Scsi Scanner With Debian Wheezy Gnome2.30.2?

Jun 27, 2011

Dist-upgrading to debian wheezy (gnome2.30.2) prevents me using a scsi HP 6200C scanner. I tried both

startx
gnome-session
and startx
exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

In both cases:

$ ls -l /dev/sg*
crw------- 1 root root 21, 0 Jun 27 16:21 /dev/sg0
crw------- 1 root root 21, 1 Jun 27 16:21 /dev/sg1
crw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 21, 2 Jun 27 16:21 /dev/sg2
crw-rw----+ 1 root root 21, 3 Jun 27 16:21 /dev/sg3

instead of the expected "root scanner" to which affording permission (as it occurred with previous gnome in sqeeze). Incidentally, a flash card is not automatically mounted (no permission) but was solved by manual mounting as vfat.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Can't Access Home Folder

Jan 3, 2010

I can't access the home folder. sudo nautilus in Terminal returned this message:

Quote:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error Permission denied.
You do not have permission to create a usershare. Ask your administrator to grant you permissions to create a share.Or something to that effect. When Nautilus opened, the screen showed a generic root folder and the only icon was Desktop. Some research led me to install Samba, which reduced the error message.

Ubuntu :: Home Folder Not Opening - Nautilus - UID?

Nov 29, 2010

I am helping a friend with his ubuntu PC, and I reinstalled to go from 8.04 to 10.10. In the process I had reconfigured his home directory to be a separate partition, it all worked ok. Although I did have to do the new install as a new username etc as I think is usual in such cases. I am not *convinced* I sorted all ownerships and permissions out. after the new install, I did change ownership of /home/oldusername contents using chown, which seemed to work ok. I do note that for the old username in the original 8.04 installation the uid was 1000, but the same username in the new installation is 1001

the problem is that nautilus does not start from Places > Home folder all that is seen is a waiting circle, which soon stops. But nautilus *does* start from a user terminal with just nautilus

Ubuntu :: File Preview In Nautilus On 11.04 On Networked Home Drive

Aug 2, 2011

We have recently upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 64bit from 10.04 and 10.10 in a networked office in which our home directories are mounted on a server raid array. Ubuntu considers that the home directory is a local drive rather than on a networkWe have noticed that file preview are very very slow in 11.04 for pdf's and pictures in nautilus, causing a lag of around 10 seconds for each file. This can cause a problem for folders which hold multiple files which can be previewed. Preview worked fine in previous versions of ubuntu on the same machine, with the same network setup. Previewing of actual local files works faster, but is slower on 11.04, than previous versions.

Both the 10.10 and 11.04 systems are up to date with available updates (11.04 - 2.32.2.1 and 2.30.1 on ubuntu 10)Obviously, there is a work around for this problem - turn off preview. But, it would be nice to turn it on as its a useful feature.

Fedora :: Nautilus Can't View Home Folder?

Mar 12, 2010

When I try to view ~ in nautilus, the animation in the upper right corner just spins indefinitely. It happens when I run nautilus as root too.Typing "ls -la" in the home folder will cause the term to freeze. Neither "ls -a" or "ls -l" by themselves cause it to freeze The freezing only happens in ~ to my knowledge. The freezing terminal also ONLY happens in xterm, inside gnome. Through ssh I can display the folder contents just fine, and I don't see any strange file names that might be causing an issue.I tried following advice I found, I believe on this site, to "rm -rf ~/.gvfs"I feel that I may e overwritten a fedora-specific library somewhere when trying to compile different things. I don't recall this being an issue immediately after upgrading from fc10 to fc12, though it could have conceivably gone unnoticed.

Fedora :: Home Folder Does Not Always Load In Nautilus / Sort It?

HiI still have a issue where nautilus occasionally wont show my home folder's contents.
(it has no images or videos or music in the home folder directly (only in sub-folders), only other folders and text files, incl dot files for settings)

I have to reboot to get it to work.
Sometimes it does it right after a reboot, a 2nd reboot then allows nautilus to see contents of the home folder.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Not Loading; Can't Find Home?

Aug 5, 2010

I have recently installed unbuntu on a second drive on my machine and am getting an error message during booting. The message is "The disk drive for /home is not ready not or not present". Below, it gives me the options to wait; skip mounting or manually mount home. If I skip, I get a series of errors related to /home followed by a blank screen. This is during the second boot; the first boot worked fine and the operating system ran smoothly. I ran all updates during that first session (don't know if this is related).

I have windows XP and XP64 on one drive, Ubuntu, several ext4 partitions, and one NTFS partition on a second, and data (ntfs) on a third. Windows is still working fine and I still boot through Grub. am new to linux so I don't really know where to start to trouble shoot this.

Ubuntu Networking :: Newbie's WIFI Can't Find Home?

I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu 9.10. I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an older Compaq Presario 6100. Initially my built in wireless was not working. I searched the forum and was able to get my wireless working (I think) by installing the BCM43XX driver. I assume that works on my computer since I believe the BCM4306 driver is needed. Anyway, assuming my wireless is working, my home network does not show up in the pick list when I go to network<wireless.

I've spent a couple of hours already researching this and up someone can help me out. I would really like to give this new system a try.

Ubuntu :: Link To Application Cannot Find Applications In Home Folder

Jan 27, 2010

I seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.

-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.

and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Update System Unable To Find Home Dir

Mar 10, 2011

Yesterday did a fresh install of UNR 10.10, all went well with that. After the first log in it found the Wifi and checked for updates. Updated the system and then it went to restart the system due to a Kernel upgrade. Once I did this, that is when the issues started. Firstly when booting up, it just sat at the Ubuntu boot up screen saying:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present"
'Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery'

So firstly I hit S, this presented me with several error boxes (as expected due to setup/config files sitting in my /home folder), I then found that I wasn't able to connect to my wifi (not that it can't see it, just that it won't connect) each time I try and connect it just comes up saying that the wifi is disconnected. Of all the things to fail I was expecting the Bluetooth to and it didn't. Anyway the computer specs are: MSI Wind U100, upgraded to 2 Gig Ram, 320Gig HDD, and wifi card is the Realtek RTL8187SE.

HDD is setup as:
4Gig for Swap (/dev/sdb1)
6Gig for / (/dev/sdb5)
Remainder is /home (/dev/sdb6) (I did make this an encrypted partition)
Can't do any screen shots as I am not able to connect to the internet on that machine (having to use another computer in the house). I have tried to view the fstab file and I am not able to.
