View 8 Replies View RelatedI have changed to ubuntu a few months ago from windows, where I used to have a mediawiki set up on a local server. This wiki was used for notes, archiving, document management, file storage, calendaring, almost everything that most people do with a normal directory tree on their drives.
Unfortunately, I have not yet managed to install a local media wiki on my ubuntu 10.04 LTS system so far. I have tried it once and messed up the php-stuff so badly that I had to reinstall the entire system in order for it to work in a acceptable speed.
how to set up a current version mediawiki (or an older version, if that's the only chance) as a local wiki in 10.04 LTS? There is no network access to the wiki, just local access using a firefox browser on the machine where it is installed.
I use to auto start Firefox and Thunderbird. I would like to add others but using a delay. For instance, Firefox starts with 10 seconds of delay, Thunderbird with 30 second an so on. I tried to make a script using "sleep" command, but I am not expert and nothing worked. So, do you know if already exist an application that does this if not, are you able to show me how to create the script?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been installing Ubuntu on more and more systems for people. But I'm just doing the install from the the LiveCD download on the Ubuntu homepage. Once I do the install people want their desktop to look like mine so then I have to install Compiz and Cairo-dock and configure them both like mine. Is there a way to create a LiveCD or installation disk already pre-loaded and configured with Cairo-dock and Compiz. I'd also take off F-Spot and add digiKam, along with making sure a working version of Flash and Java are also included in my personal installs..
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed the Maveric 10.10 version on an HP Pavilion dv7-1262us laptop and am using Evolution 2.30.3 for email. When I click on the contacts button in Evolution, and then click on a particular contact (in the personal contact list), I can't seem to modify the name or email; I can click in the boxes and cursor about, but no editing; the entire panel seems to be greyed out. I have searched a bit, but have not seen this particular problem addressed.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm not looking for software that has any relation to CPU scheduling, but something more for personal use. I don't want to use Evolution, because I'm not looking to keep track of weekly repeating tasks on an annual calendar. It's not for business use, but something more applied to home chores or weekly maintenance of my car. Has anyone come across anything close to this? I'm out of ideas on where to search.

how difficult it would be to set up a specific folder on my box that I can treat as my own personal dropbox. That way I can access the folder and whatever is inside of it by hitting my external IP, or domain, etc. It'd also be nice to upload to that specific folder on my box too. This is speaking from externally to the LAN.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to be able to have email sent directly to my computer at home (i.e. run some kind of mail server on it) instead of having to rely on Gmail, Yahoo or someone else. From what I've read it should be possible, but most of the guides out there seem to be oriented to enterprise-class setups, or at the very least a small business, and I think that a lot of that would be overkill for just getting my personal mail. The minimum *I think* is
- register a domain name, with the DNS pointing to my public IP (which is dynamic, so one question I have is whether I would have to use DynDNS or is DNS at any registrar going to be flexible enough to modify if/when my IP changes?)- something about MX records (I'm really unsure here, what exactly are these and where do I set them up? I don't think a free DynDNS account lets one handle this, does someone know which of their account types supports setting this up?)
- Install sendmail and postfix (which seems like a PITA, but much documentation appears to be available)
- Profit?
I have a Natty installation that I just did yesterday on my personal PC. I am not home currently, but I can access my router (uses DD-WRT), and my Media Center Machine (Ubuntu 10.10) via SSH. For some reason, when I rebooted my router via SSH my personal PC (with Natty) did not renew an IP.Is there a way I can use magic packets or any other method from my other Ubuntu machine that I have remote access to, to force that other machine to renew it's IP?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do I reinstall Ubuntu without wiping my personal data files?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with stuff lately, and I was thinking that I could theoretically move my personal files to another partition, have it mount under /home/User... then change the system partition to 6 or 7GB and go about my merry way...That way, if I need to reinstall the os, or when the next release comes out, or even install another primary system, I could just wipe the system partition and keep all my data on the HD...just make an fstab entry like:
Code:
/dev/sda3 /home/User btrfs default 0 2
or something, and them BOOM! it's done. I am the master of my domain.

I would like to create a customized CentOS server, or it will serve me as a server (postfis) postfixadmin, Hylafax, webmail (Roundcube for example) and may be I would integrate suger crm.
If I create it all this server and it runs perfectly. my goal is I create a compilation or for example I install this distrubution and wonder just some configuration (eg IP address or the time just) knowing that by the end of the installation I find hylafax, postfix , and all AC roundecube install it remains for me to set them up! Taking the example of Elastix cd: www.elastix.org/ or it can make all AC (but its main role is the PABX).
(Running Lucid Lynx) In the Personal File Sharing Preferences it won't let me to tick the box to share public files on the network as it says the required packages are not installed on my system. The options for sharing via Bluetooth are available to me however. What packages am I missing (and how do I get hold of them)?
View 9 Replies View Relatedlast week I decided to not just run dist-upgrade, but give the Lynx a completely fresh install. Before that I've only copied my home folder to an external hard-drive.
Now that I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 I have no clue how to import my old personal key and the passwords from the backup (my old home folder).
Using Rhythmbox to stream your music to multiple potential listeners over the Internet. But mostly, writing down how I did it so I don't have to re-do all the research the next time.StepsInstall icecast2: APT linkEdit /etc/icecast2/icecast.xml to configure your password at least. You need to add a user-specific password for the username that will be running Rhythmbox. For example, if your username is john you need to putQuote:<john-password>ChangeThisPassword</john-password>between the <authentication> </authentication> tags.I also suggest you set the port to 8000.Restart icecast2 using the following command:
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/icecast2 restart

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to set up a home web server for my personal site using Ubuntu 11.04 and Apache. I have set up a user called www and given it FTP access to its home area (/home/www) using vsftpd. I then edited /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and set the DocumentRoot directive to /home/www. When I made a test index.html file in that directory it worked fine. Then I FTP'd to the server (as www) from another PC and uploaded the site files. Now when I try to access the site I get an error 403 (forbidden).Obviously I'm doing something wrong here but I'm not sure what. What should I do to fix this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a simple issue that I think can be solved with several different methods. I basically want to create a personal server solution that allows me to do two things:
1.) I want to be able to remotely backup data to my server.
2.) I want to be able to pass traffic through it and use it as a proxy.
I am off to college next year and I want to leave a computer/server back home to do the two things stated above. I was thinking of using an Asus Eee Box PC like this:url
I want a low power reliable machine that will only be used as a remote solution. I won't be hooking up a monitor to it (that is, after I set it up).
It will be on 24/7 for easy access.
I will be accessing this server from a Windows 7 based machine.
I do not mind at all installing Linux on my server, but I am not an experienced coder so I will need software with a GUI that can help me set this all up.
I just installed the beta 10.04 LTS with Gnome Version: 2.29.92. I want to to create a network share but when I navigate to system>preferences>personal file sharing I can not create a share. The message indicates that the feature is not available because the required package is not installed. I tried to reinstall gnome-user-share and in reinstalled without issue but I still get the same thing. What am I missing? How can I create a network share?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI updated to the latest version of Ubuntu and before I could connect to the network "krafft" that is a WPA2-Personal protected network. If I go into Windows and change security to none I can connect with Ubuntu, but not when it's protected. After a bit of time logged in without network a dialogue pops up and looks almost like this :but "Focus" is replaced with "krafft" and the password is something else.I know that the password is right and the network worked perfectly before update.I got an USB wireless network receiver from D-Link and the chipste is ralink rt2870.In the previous Ubuntu distribution you had to write "blacklist rt2800usb" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but it won't work with or without that blacklist. When I updated I saw some message about the network manager(at least I think so) so maybe the problem is in that.
