I have a Ubuntu box with two drives, one of them is where Ubuntu is installed and the other one is where I store all my music, photos and other documents. I recently bought a Mac and I want to be able to access the drive where I have all my documents from my Mac. Is there a way to accomplish this? I've been looking all day for an answer to this but all I can find is how to share a folder instead of a whole drive.

Right now I have a somewhat lean GNOME setup so that I can use Webmin to share the external. Having a GUI running on the machine is pointless and a waste of memory, however, since it's headless. I just want a command line server that I can maintenance from my Windows 7 laptop with puTTY. how I would go about sharing the USB drive over my LAN without a GUI/Webmin?

I have just built 2 Ubuntu Desktop machines with a 2TB drive in each.
The machines are to sit on a Windows network one as media storage the other to as backup for the first.
I have shared a folder on each machine and all the shares can be accessed from the other Ubuntu machine and from the windows machines.
I have installed another 2TB hard drive in each machine and formatted as ext4 file system.
I then created a folder on each machines new hard drive and shared as usual. The shared folders can be seen on the network but cannot be accessed by network machines.
The error is "Unable to Mount location" "Failed to mount Windows Share"
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid as the host OS and Windows XP SP3 as the guest one. Is it possible to share an entire hard drive with the guest OS?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI managed to install samba and it's GUI. I tried to share a directory within the pictures folder (at home/mark/pictures/share) just as a test. I had everything set up right, but it was inaccessible from a windows XP machine on my network. After some digging I found the problem lay with the permissions of it's parent folder. I right clicked on the parent folder then clicked properties, then clicked on the permissions tab. I changed the permissions for others and it's working fine.
I'm having the same problem now but with a share on a NTFS drive called storage. I cannot change the permissions for the shared folder or any of it's parents by right clicking. Any changes I make revert immediately back to their previous setting. Is there any way to change the permissions to allow read access to everyone?

I've been searching for a way to do this with no luck. I've got a 1TB external hard drive I used to share over the network from my Windows desktop -- which is now a Ubuntu desktop.I've tried setting it up as a samba share, and the closest I've gotten is mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory. I've tried the suggestions (editing /etc/security/limits.conf), and that removed the warning I got from testparms but didn't fix the mounting on my mythtv box.

We have data stored on one of the shared drives of a linux(ubuntu 10.10) system which has samba installed and we are able to access that folder from other linux systems and 1 windows xp system where it asks for user name and password and is able to access the data while in other 2 windows systems (with 1 having xp and 1 having windows 7) we are unable to access the folder because it does not ask for user name and password and it shows an error network drive not accessible as you may not have the permission.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot laptop Ubuntu 10.10 + Windows XP. When browsing my Windows C Drive in Ubuntu I decided to create a share to the windows "my documents" folder. The problem is that the windows drive is not automatically mounted at launch of ubuntu and as a result I get the following errors:

I have tried to look at the Samba and Nautilus settings but I am unable to find any that automatically mount the windows drive.
I just installed Fedora 11 after wiping Fedora 9. Install went very smoothly and I like the upgrades. I am having trouble sharing a second drive. I didn't have this problem in 8 or 9. When I mount the drive under my login, I can't mount it in my wife's and vise versa. Even when I log out as opposed to switching users. This is the drive we have all of our multi media files and other files. So we both need to have access to it. Also I would very much like to share it with my XP laptop. The way I have been moving mp3s is to copy them to a jump drive then copy them the laptop. I had this problem with the Fedora 9 too.

I create a accounts suppose tom and 2nd is jarry in my samba server and map it in my windows xp computer as P drive (Private Drive) where the users can access their home directories. When tom tom enter into own account he can access his own home folder and same position with jarry. I want to create a common share drive using samba where all samba users can keep their data with their respective folders normally s drive i.e share drive. They can create file and folders and even all users can access the files of each others. I have two computers with ubuntu 10.04 installed. They both connect to the same wireless router. One computer has an external hard drive that has music, pictures and some documents. another thing, the hard drive has been formatted to ext4. I would like to be able to access that external hard drive from my other computer. I read some post on how to connect to the server through ssh but i think it's the intruction are too old. I tried nfs for server/client, but couldn't set it up, it was a little complicated.
View 1 Replies View Relatedso after searching and reading, and searching some more, im stuck. i cant seem to get a mounted thumb drive to give write access. first thing to know is that, im using a seagate dockstar with a primary thumb drive[sda1] booting debian and samba.
i guess you could say im still in the testing phase, just trying to make sure files can be shared, mounted and accessed by users. the problem is stated as the title. i have successfully shared a folder in sda1 with rw access, but i cant do the same for the second drive[sdb1].

I am buying a new laptop and am curious about dual booting it. I currently run Ubuntu full time, but will need windows for a few applications. (there are no cross over applications to do this)
When you put both windows and ubuntu on a computer do you share the hard drive? Meaning would I be able to access all my music in windows and then restart my computer-run ubuntu, would I have access to all the files?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a server which currently has a samba share for a printer and my home directory. Both have been working fine for a while now. I have a drobo (which is like a little USB RAID machine) connect via USB to the linux box. While trying to share it via samba I get weird messages from my windows machine (see screenshot). I have tried to share multiple folders on this drobo and no luck, all the same result.
I also tried a symbolic link, no good.

I am trying to share a hard drive on the network. (Essentially the hard drive is for another computer which didn't have the physical space for it so this computer is like a holding place for the hd). I read somewhere that I can use samba to do this. But in all honesty I have no idea what I am doing. What would be the best way to share this drive? Also understand, I know little about networking.

I made sure that xinet was installed and started as well as smb and nmb. I can access other shares on the server just cant get samba swat to work nor can I set up a share on an External USB. I can access it from my side but not my Wifes side. I even made the root of the drive a share like so:

Noticed this in both Ubuntu 10.04 & now Mint 9, both Gnome. I didn't have PCLinuxOS2010 KDE installed long enough to experience it so I don't know if it's a property of Linux or part of Gnome.I have two users, both myself and my wife, and I noticed thatn I mount an internal SATA drive I can only see/access it under the user that mounted it. In order for the other user to see it I need to un-mount the drive. Drive is a 1TB SATA formatted NTFS.I can't imagine this is normal and the 2nd drive is shared for pics/data/etc. Strange quirk is that my install is on a partitioned primary drive, 320gb, that also has Windows on it so the OS must access the drive in order to boot - both users can see the mounted 215gb Windows NTFS partition simultaneously.Is there a setting that needs to be changed or is this normal?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am just starting out in linux and am a little confused about mounting drives. On my fedora pc, I have 2 x hard drives. When I originally installed the os, I had 1 drive with the default partitioning. I placed all my data into /var/files and had various folders under there e.g. music, video, docs etc. It didn't take long for this to fill up. So I added a 2nd drive and mounted it as /var/files which increased the space for all the folders in that directory. So my fstab has:
sda1 /
sdb1 /var/files
Now its filling up again and I want to add a 3rd drive. But this time, I want to separate my music from my video's etc but still keep the share under /var/files. So, do I add the 3rd drive, mount it as /var/files/music1, then transfer the music files from /var/files/music to /var/files/music1 and once the transfer is complete, delete /var/files/music, rename /var/files/music1 to /var/files/music and then mount sdc1 to/var/files/music? The bit I can't get my head around is the mount within a mount:
sdb1 /var/files is mounting everything under it including /music
If I add sdc1 /var/files/music how does it affect the mount point of sdb1
Am I better putting the /music under /var/music instead of /var/files?
I have a router running IPCOP with a 30 gig drive. I know the OS doesnt need that much space for a router. Can IPCOP mount and share out another partition on the same hard drive its installed on to my windows computers on my network?
