Ubuntu / Apple :: Fan Control For Mactel-support Repo
Apr 30, 2010
One of the most long-lived discussions regarding running Ubuntu on Macs is the problem of excessive heat. There exist solutions for every single case, but they are somewhat hard for the newcomer to find.
This post is a request for a fan-control solution suitable for all macs, to eventually be put in the mactel-support repository. I know there are several fan-control solutions out there, and my hope is that this thread will single out one of them to improve upon to the point that everybody can install and use it on their mac.

I've been following the instructions for the Mactel team and they say to put this into the terminal:
Code:
But it always gives me this:
Code:
I really need this because i believe this fixes a lot of driver issues. Im running the latest MacBook Pro (intel i5 / MBP 6th Gen).
I'm having severe driver issues, i think these fixes these, right?
- No sound
- Special buttons like brightness, sound, etc show up on Ubuntu when pushed but nothing actually happens. Same with the Eject button. Shows a status bubble in the top right that it's ejecting, but doesn't do anything.
- The touchpad, as it has no buttons on the Mac, is nearly not useable, but they say it works out of the box...
Also, side question... can you change control to be cmd? Like, swap them to match the Mac's layout?

First some background: I currently have iTunes running on a Vista box attached to my TV. I have an Ubuntu box running 11.04 and shairport which serves as remote speakers for the iTunes server. This works fairly well as I can control it with my iPhone, or iPad etc. Very slick interface and my wife loves it .
But I would prefer to not use iTunes to as the server. I would like to let that Vista box sleep most of the day. Doing a little bit of reading it sounds like I should be able to use mt-daapd as a replacement for iTunes. So I installed firefly and gave it a shot. I can get it streaming music fine. But I cannot Apple's "Remote" app to add the new library. When I did some poking I read that I should make a file that ends in ".remote" and put my device name + the pairing passcode from my iPhone in this file.
When I enter the "Add Library" mode on my iPhone it should broadcast an mDNS event. And in fact it looks like it does because: avahi-browse -r -k _touch-remote._tcp Can see my iPhone. But when I do a tail -f on the mt-daapd logfile I never see a connection come up. I have tried debug level 8 in the messaging.Still nothing. In my search for a fix I noticed mt-daapd is no longer being developed but there is forked-daapd. This is actually where I found the instructions for pairing via Remote.
Should I bail on mt-daapd? Will there someday be Ubuntu support for forked-daapd?

If you're familiar with macs, you know that they use command keys instead of control..
If I want to select all I press COMMAND + A not CONTROL + A copy is COMMAND + C, paste is COMMAND + V, quitting an application is COMMAND + Q.
I am used to this, and I would like to change the command key to be the control key, and the macs control key to be the "windows" key.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 6,2 and try as I might can't change the brightness of my screen whatsoever. I cant use "echo 100> /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness" because the folder does not exist. Pommed, when run using "sudo pommed -d" complains with "Failed to access brightness node: No such file or directory".
I have the mbp-nvidia-bl driver installed *only* (removed nvidia-bli because I had seen in other threads that the two conflicted). I've tried searching the forums and the web but nothing is helping me so far. Biggest roadblock for me using ubuntu is having the headache of using a much to dim screen(or currently a much too bright screen)

I have a white Macbook 7,1 and am running 11.04 beta 1. I have worked out almost everything, sound being the main thing that didn't work. The one thing I don't have working is my brightness control -- my laptop always displays at 100%. I tried installing pommed and the dkms package from the Mactel PPA, but nothing works yet. The wiki hasn't been updated to 7,1 for Maverick, let alone Natty.

Is there a way to easily make the command key function as the control key on a macbook pro in these modern times of 2011? I tried one of the command-line based tutorials and couldn't get it to work. Seeing as I have little idea as to what I was doing, I'm going to need a gui. But come Natty, nothing appears to be working. I would think that this is a common question, so I'm sure there is something simple I'm overlooking.

My MacBookPro5,5 (also known as the June 2009 Unibody MBP) is having brightness problems. Usually, with OOTB Ubuntu, I can control the brightness flawlessly with the keyboard keys labeled F1 and F2 with no problems once I install the nvidia_bl driver. Pommed improves the experience, giving me keyboard brightness.
Since installing yesterday, the brightness control randomly stopped working. Xev reports that the brightness up and down keys return a keycode (whereas F7 - F12, the playback and volume keys do not; both sets control their respective stuff natively)... this shouldn't happen. nvidia_bl is loading properly according to dmesg; so this problem is baffling.
The Gnome brightness applet does not work, nor does auto dimming. The applet displays a helpfully-apt red circle-with-slash mark. "echo x | sudo tee -a /sys/class/backlight/nvidia_backlight/brightness" still works to change the brightness manually. I can get the Gnome brightness working by manually changing the brightness, killing gnome-power-daemon, and then restarting it via the terminal in no-daemon mode.

I currently have kubuntu 11.04 on my laptop harddrive that is in an external enclosure. it is on the outside of the machine and connect to the computer via USB.It works fine on my windows machine and I love the fact I could also plug it into my kubuntu machine at home and use it as a regular harddrive too. Although my new job basically wants me to use a mac. Apparently you need something called an efi support on my grub so here are the questions:
Does kubuntu 11.04 have efi support on its grub i.e. can I plug my hard drive with my kubuntu on via USB to a mac and boot from there? If not how could I get one? Also does getting efi support make any difference when I plug it into my kubuntu machine at home? So can I back up my data as I used to?(by simply plugging it in)Could I still plug it into my windows machine as before and work if I get efi support?
p.s. If you have trouble with heavy laptops give external harddrives a go its like carrying an ultra light linux machine (with all your data in it)!

I've finished integrating proper keyboard backlight support into gnome-power-manager (which in turn uses upower to actually control the keyboard backlight) which with any luck will be available in Natty out of the box. A similar patch should also land upstream too so Fedora etc should get it for free too in their next release too. In essence this allows us to provide the user with greater feedback and control than say just using pommed (ie. we can dim the keyboard on idle like the lcd display etc, and can display nice notifications of the keyboard backlight level too - see attached screenshot).

I've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......

I am running a FC14 x64 on a desktop which has a nvidia GeForce310 aka GT218 card which is being supported by the in kernel nouveau driver.
The kernel/syslog reports:
Code:
When Fedora 14 boots, I can hear the nvidia GPU fan spin up to its max rate.
With Windows on this same machine, the same fan starts at the same rate but drops to a lower (and less noisy rate) so we know there is graphics card supports fan control.
Does anyone know if its possible to set the nvidia's fan speed via the nouveau (or other) driver/util?
I have looked at nvclock (0.8b4 being the most recent I could find) but running this reports that the card isn't supported, although it reportedly supports the NV5x backend.

I also noticed that when I right-click on the Quicktime screen, it gives me the option to play the video using Banshee. I then launch it and I doeble click on the video that is listed, the banshee logo flashes and nothing happens. Can someone tell me a way to resolve this, is there a way to resolve it.

i'm attempting to know and understand fedora more and i will spend probably the next month pouring through all the forums and documents to answer more of my own questions. but there's quite a bit here, so i'd thought i'd ask some noob questions to get me started a little.
ive installed fedora 14 64bit and chosen only kde as the desktop. i selected an extra 2 repos besides the default, fedora 14 -x86_64 and fedora 14-x86_64 -updates. i believe this kernel is installed: 2.6.35.11-83
1. i can only see the 2 extra repo's as being "checked" in kpackagekit, shouldn't i see the default repo also ?
2. i dont have an applet in the system tray indicating the system is up to date, does fedora have this by default ? also after a clean install i ran yum check-update and yum update but the message sayes: "no packages marked for update". i'm not sure if the system is auto-updated during install or not, but with other distros iv tried there is always atleast a few updates needing to be done after install.
3. is kpackagekit the fedora gui package manager ? i dont see any others.
4. i want to upgrade to nvidia drivers, but i think i am missing a non-free repo or something. when i enter: yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 i get messages stating "no package" i get the same message with yum install nvidia-settings.i also tried this: LANG=C yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree info akmod-nvidia but it sayes repo not found.

I wasn't paying proper attention when adding a repo to yast and need to find the file were the info is saved to delete this. The problem is that whenever i use yast it comes up with an error code saying that it can't find the data for the 'problem' repo. Have tried zypper rm but that comes up with a similar error advising that the data is in a format that was not expected. My thinking is to track the file were the yast repo source details are saved, delete this and then just add the repos that i use back.

I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.
I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.
