Ubuntu :: Call A Huge Nerd (via Ssh)

Dec 5, 2010

call me a huge nerd, but I have official control of my computer on my HTC Evo (via ssh) and I am ecstatic. I seirously just rebooted my computer for the hell of it. Anyways, I am trying to figure out some creative uses of this little trick. I listen to music a lot, and figured "hey, wouldn't it be cool to be able to change the song playing on my computer with the command line some how?" I use rthymbox to play songs, however, am not sure if this is/will be possible.

How can I go about changing the current playing song with the command line? Is there perhaps a shell based music player that can play audio though the computers audio output (while I run the command from my phone)?

Ubuntu Servers :: Nfs - RPC Call Returned Error 88

Jun 2, 2010

I recently upgraded a couple of my systems from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS. I had no issues with nfs prior to the upgrade. After the upgrade I am occasionally seeing the following messages:

mspfiles being the share name.

This never used to happen on 8.04. Generally the error "Socket operation on non-socket" points to a coding error. Could this be a bug in the kernel? Has anyone else come across this?

The only other recent reference that I found to the same errors was in this comment on the OpenSUSE bugtracker: [url]

It seems as though it is handling loss of connectivity less gracefully than it did before.

I can't really upgrade any more of my servers until this is fixed as we are heavily dependant on nfs.

Let me see if I can put this coherently: Programs that require super user authentication AFTER they have been launched (for instance,in the time settings applet, you have to sudo authenticate to update the clock, but not just to open the applet. Another instance is Ubuntu-Tweak, which requires admin rights for some of it's functions.)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Snd_pcm_hw_params() Call Hangs In 10.04

Oct 15, 2010

I am trying to get a program running on Ubuntu 10.04 that I wrote and ran successfully on Ubuntu 8.04. It uses the ALSA sound interface. As part of the initialization it calls snd_pcm_hw_params() to write parameters to the driver. On 10.04 this call hangs (does not return). Here are the 'snd_' entries displayed by lsmod (actually: lsmod | grep snd):

snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2367 1
snd_hda_codec_realtek 203374 1
snd_hda_intel 22037 2

[code]....

I have the following modules loaded (via Synaptic Package Manager):

alsa-base, alsa-source, alsa-utils, libasound2-dev.

Obviously the program compiles OK. Any ideas why snd_pcm_hw_params() should hang? Its arguments were fine when running under 8.04... My machine is a new Dell Inspiron 570.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Using Pidgin For An Audio/video Call?

Mar 19, 2010

I'm using a PS3 Eye, which seems to work out of the box on my Ubuntu 9.10 system (both Skype, and Cheese). When I have a pidgin chat window open for one of my contacts, in the media options (under Conversation) the audio, video, and audio/video option is ghosted out (non selectable).

I have the Video plugin checked (ticked), with the input video selected (the cam shows up in the list, and it's selected): for the Eye, I select for both the Audio and Video device. But when I close the plugin configuration window, it defaults back to "Default" which i'm guessing is part of the problem. The audio and video options in pidgin is relative to my system correct? So even if the other user doesn't have that capability, it'll still let me use audio/video for them?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Call With Empathy Using GTalk?

Apr 1, 2010

I'm trying to get video calls to work using Empathy 2.30.0. I'm running the 10.04 beta right now, but I've had this problem ever since I installed Empathy. The problem is essentially that I don't even see the option to do a video call with my contact. I can do an audio call, but the option to do a video call is greyed out.

My webcam is built-in (the computer is a Dell Inspiron 1545n). I know that it _can_ work under Linux, as I regularly use Skype. Also, just after I upgraded to 10.04, I briefly had the "video call" option, but when the program crashed I tried to call, and then the option was gone again. What was strange is that for a little bit, before it crashed, my webcam was working, and I could see the image it was receiving. So it can't even be that Empathy just can't use my webcam.

Does anyone know anything about this problem? Everywhere I've looked says that Empathy should be able to make calls using GTalk.

I have a home server that I built recently and I have been looking into things I can make it do, and one idea that came up was software to manage incoming calls. I've tried Googling around, but I really didn't find much.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype / No Incoming Call Sound?

Jul 14, 2010

I'm having a problem with Skype. Whenever someone calls me, the incoming call popup shows up, but I can hear no sound playing. Further, if I go in Options/Notifications and try to test the incoming call event, I'm having the same problem.

The .wav file exists and Skype can play it back. I have tested this by assigning that particular .wav to a different event, where it works as expected. Additionally, the other events, e.g. outgoing call, appear to be working normally. This would suggest, that the problem lies with the incoming call event, rather than the particular sound.

I made right click in the green icon and chose "Options"

2 I went to the "Sound Devices" menu in the left part of the window

3 I removed the tick for "Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels"

4 I closed Skype and opened it again and the sound problem was gone.
