Ubuntu :: 10.10 Logs Off "randomly"
Oct 17, 2010
I recently got this error in my xsession-errors: [URL]
seems like I keep seeing sparql involved when I check. Log offs have happened while using both firefox and chrome, and while viewing a pdf with document viewer since upgrading to 10.10. I may be missing software, my updater says my package info is 44 days old, but I get errors when I try to reload the repos.

So this has been happening a lot lately. My Lucid desktop just randomly logs me off. I notice that when it happens my RAM is usually over 85% in use as cache. Is this normal? When I first turn on my PC cache is most of the time at about 15-20% but that is expected. I was thinking that maybe some program that runs in the background has a major memory leek, which I would expect in C. This never used to happen and one day it just started, it now does it about 5-6 times a week.

My computer randomly shuts off sometimes and I'm not sure what causes it. It doesn't always happen when I'm doing the same thing.I know this is hardly any info, but if someone could let me know where I can go to find logs and Also, if this means anything, to restart my computer I need to physically turn it off (the I/O switch on my PS) and let the capacitors on my board empty out before starting it up again.

I am trying to print a file on my HP Photosmart 2575 + Ubuntu 10.04.This could very well be a hardware error because the printer behaves weird on windows too!Anyway, it stops randomly when printing things, however always on the same place. For example this file. It always stops after the third page (printing reverse, so 3rd from the last).

I've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.

When I try to login as me - it gets pretty far but then something happens and automatically logs out. This happens in Gnome, Kde too. Now - I have no problem logging in a Root. Is there a way I can try to stop the login process before it kicks me out, or is there a way to look at some files to tell me what's going on?

On our app server the logs from the Sybase Mobilink service get logged to /var/log because of that I did a chmod a+rx /var/log and all is well until.... the next day QA logs in goes to check the logs and gets:
Quote:
qa@dwdb [~]$ ls /var/log
ls: /var/log: Permission denied
qa@dwdb [~]$

1) THE SETUP: I have a home set-up with 3 Ubuntu computers, including an HTPC which is always on, plugged into a Verizon FIOS routerI also have a web based cam (TrendNet TV IP422W).The cam has an ethernet jack so it plugs in directly to the router. It has a simple firmware that allows users to log in via HTTP.It is also managed via HTTP.
2)THE PROBLEM: the cam does not keep logs.So I never know who is logged in at any one point. It's not a big deal, but it is annoying.I want to fix that. The router does not keep logs either.I was told I can get a linux based router to replace (or plug in) to the default FIOS router, but I am looking for something simpler and cheaper.
3)THE FAILED SOLUTION: my idea was to set up the Ubuntu HTPC to always forward a given port to the webcam via the LAN. I tried to follow the instruction from URL...as best I could, see below. 6666 is the port that the cam is listening to (the router is set to forward that port to the cam's LAN IP 192.168.1.30). 5555 is the port that I am trying to forward through the HTPC (ubuntu.local or 192.168.1.130 below, and the router is set to forward any 5555 TCP packets to the HTPC at 192.168.1.130).The iptables commands below where run on the HTPC.

My laptop Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu 10.10 has started logging itself out every 30-60 minutes or so. I am trying to figure out what is the problem. I am wondering if it is
1) a hardware problem. I have recently replaced the cooling fan which required disassembling the whole thing into small pieces. The computer has worked without a problem for one day after the repair.
or
2) a problem with a recent update. The computer started logging itself out after a recent update. This coincidence is suspicious, but I hasn't noticed anyone reporting a similar problem with Ubuntu 10.10.
Is there a way I can see what is happening through the system log? What would be the keyword I should look for in the log files?
Can I track the last updates I have applied and roll them back?
The only solution I see now is to reassemble the laptop to see if it helps.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 over the weekend and wanted to tail the logs whilst doing so stuff. When I browsed to the folder after getting an error trying to tail, I noticed that the messages file does not exist.
Usually use tail -f /var/log/messages

Ubuntu one does not synchronize files since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. The preferences panel keeps showing "Synchronization in progress...", but files are not downloaded from the repository. It does not show any error message.
Where do I find the programm logs, where I can investigate my problem?

I cannot find one single UFW event anywhere. I have researched this and see that others have trouble finding these logs too. I have looked in every /var/log there is and I can't find one event. I have UFW enabled, default deny and logging set to medium from a previous logging low(in hopes this would create more events to be seen). In terminal, UFW is shown as active. I have been using Ubuntu for more than a year now and I recall seeing UFW events with every session in some /var/logs in Ubuntu 9.04 - I'm running 9.10 now. I have also tried looking throughout the system files and have found nothing. Is UFW not working properly or could I just not be experiencing any firewall events(not likely)?

I don't know if this a bug or some setting that I have changed inadvertently, but when I start up my computer Ubuntu now logs me on automatically to the sole user account I have created but without asking me my password.I rarely fiddle about with settings and am not aware of touching anything to do with user accounts etc. Obviously I don't want this behaviour otherwise I wouldn't have put a password on the account. Everytime I log on I want to choose what language I want to run my system from the log on screen.
In administration > users and groups > it says my user account password is asked at login. Is there an option somewhere else to turn this behaviour on or off?how I could have accidentally turned this behaviour on?

Is there anyway to view the Boot Log of the messages displayed during the booting of Ubuntu? I found log file viewer under Administration but there were so many logs I did not know if any of them were the Boot up logs. I have my Ubuntu configured to display the messages as it boots before it switches to GUI mode and I see an error message about something failing to initialise but it goes by too fast to read the entire error message. I have Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit

whenever i use flash, e.g streaming a video on videos, the computer logs off (although it also closes all the windows so may be actually restarts).
when i log back on the sound also doesn't work, i have to reboot for it to come back on.
i'm sure this is to do with the flash-plugin and not the browser as i have tried many different browsers with the same result.

I just (regrettably) did a clean install of 10.04nbr on a Dell Mini 10. I got to wifi and gma500 crap all worked out (almost), but now when I close the lid, and reopen it, I'm greeted with a black screen. I know it's still running, because I can hear the little drum sound of the login screen loading- it's just not displayed to the screen. ctrl-alt-f8 brings it back, but just the login screen. After logging in - I can see that all my apps have been closed. It's like it brings up the wrong tty (sorry if I'm using the wrong wording). I don't know if it's relevant, but I have it set to log in automatically. This is a bit frustrating- I've done some googling and haven't found any relevant information.

I recently clean installed Ubuntu 10.10 and copied over my last home directory from 11.04, after having upgraded from 10.10. Maybe something went wrong in this transition which is making this happen. Basically, I have a macbook pro with Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and have the latest nvidia driver. I'm sshing using -X and -A. I try "emacs &" and Ubuntu logs me out immediately. Occasionally, it will simply log me out on startup although I haven't seen this happen in the last few logins. I also just tried running kdiff3. It starts to load the window and it does the same as emacs: it logs me out of Ubuntu.

I've been having trouble with this for quite some time now, I've attempted to find a solution to this problem but no matter how far I look I cannot seem to find anything revolving any aspect related to this. At certain points in time there are moments where my Ubuntu windows "Firefox, Calculator, Terminal, Etc." become white thus being unreadable, However I can input commands into them and pages/programs will still load through out them. Although there is a simple solution to this problem that works part of the time if I alter one of the windows by either maximising it or minimising it, I'll either have fixed the problem for the time being or crashed Ubuntu thus resulting in a boot to the login screen.
My computer specs are as follows.
Navidia Geforce 9400 Gt
AMD Athlon(tm) 7550 Dual-Core Processor
W/ 3 GB Ddr2 ram
I am running Ubuntu 11 - Narwhal
If I run this command lspci I this message 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] (rev a2)Which suggests that this problem is probably occurring around my Gpu, If I unplug my Vga cable from my on-board graphics card into my Navidia graphics card I get a message stating that an input could not be found. I've tried installing the latest Navidia graphics driver for my Gpu but I get "You appear to be on a X server" followed by an installation failure. I read a forum post on switching screens using ctrl+alt+f1-f6 but if I use this command I get a blue screen until switching back to f7.
I have done everything in my power with my limited knowledge of ubuntu and I seem to have failed, If I were capable of doing it alone I would not be here.

From a 11.04 Ubuntu, I installed the meta-package xfce4 (*). Now, in the xfce4 session, "suspend" and "logout" (from the xfce4-panel button) works, but "shutdowmn" and "reboot" not, they only lead to GDM. (the shutdowm option there works.)
I tried to solve that by installing the meta-package "xubuntu-desktop" (maybe there are some necessary settings included?), and in fact, the login-screen changed (it's still GDM, I suppose) and there is now a "xubuntu" session, but in that, the probem is just the same: shutdown only leads to the login screen.
In Gnome Classic or Unity, shutdowmn works as it shoulds, so it's not a general problem with my computer.
In Detail, in forst tried to install xfce4 with ubuntu-software-center, but although it seemed to succeed, there was no xfce session. In Synaptic, installing the xfce3 metapackage worked. In fact, software-center seemed to have overlooked some dependencies...

I'm running a laptop and a desktop that both have Hardy on them. A few days ago I updated to 8.04.4 on both and since then when I click on the red Shutdown button and then click on 'Shutdown' it just logs me out. Anyone have this happen to them after the update? Any ideas on how to fix it?I am not physically pushing the power button on the PC's. so unfortunately going to Gnome Top Panel Menu > System > Preferences > Power Management > General Tab Actions will not work to correct this issue

I'm running ubuntu server on a home server which runs samba, ftp, and bittorrent 24/7. there is no need to be using the graphics capabilities of the system by having a desktop environment active 24/7 so to save power when i'm not using the desktop, i stop the kdm/gdm and x. This can be done easily by sudo start/stop kdm/gdm/x etc., but there are users in my home who are unprivileged on this computer but who would still like to use it from time to time and rather than having me login every time and start x for them, I would like to find an automatic solution to the problem.
I tried setuid scripts (which i found out fast didn't work), I tried compiling a small c program (again, setuid then start x) which i couldn't get to work, I also tried looking for a signal to send upstart when a specific user logs in so the appropriate environment could start but couldn't find one. I've only just started getting into upstart scripting and despite what I know.
