Ubuntu :: 10.10 Meerkat Works In Safemode Only
Nov 24, 2010
I loaded the operating software on a new drive and all seemed to load ok. When I go to log in to ubuntu I get the window with my user name and a request for password. I type my password and go forward and the ubuntu appears to go into the program then the login window comes back on the screen. It almost seems like it is stuck in a loop???...If I put in my password and choose safemode I can access the operating system.

Fresh install AMD64 10.10 alternative (for RAID). No mouse will work. I have tried 3. My old optical M$ PS2 / USB mouse that I have had for years, that worked fine on Lucid yesterday before wipeout and clean install. dell cheapo usb wheel mouse and apple pro mouse usb. all light up like they want to work. LSUSB shows them. Dmesg shows them when I unplug and replug. The mouse cursor is there but will not move.

I have a relatively fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 and decided to do some tweaking. I edited the grub2 menu background and font using /etc/defaults/grub and friends and everything worked fine. I then downloaded startupconfig and changed a resolution (think it was the splash) to the highest supported which was 1600x1200. My monitor runs at 1600x900 natively. After rebooting to check it out, i got a nice custom grub2 menu, but after choosing to boot ubuntu i get a black screen. Okay, change the res back from recovery mode? Nope. I get a blank screen loading recovery mode as well. Which leads me to believe that this is more than just a graphics problem.

I cannot run safemode as user. Iceweasel ignores safemode and opens a normal window. It works fine as root. I tried a slew of switches I found posted on the Mozillazine KB and elsewhere:
iceweasel --safe-mode
iceweasel -safe-mode
iceweasel --safemode
iceweasel -safemode
None of the above worked as user. I did not test all of them as root after the first one worked so don't know if they would or not. How can I get safe-mode to work as user? Do I need to add myself to a certain Group? Not a biggie but a bit of a pain to have to su to run safemode.

Starting around two weeks ago, Iceweasel began closing at unpredictable intervals for no apparent reason. When I ran it in GDB, it came up as a segfault, though the backtraces were different each time. It would even do this in safe mode, though it generally took longer. Icedove began doing the same thing around the same time.
So, I decided to reset my profile and start over. But now it's still segfaulting, even in safe mode.
A cursory use of memtester didn't turn up anything unusual.
Could it be some browser addon that is causing problems even when it's not activated?
If so, why is Icedove doing the same thing occasionally?
The biggest problem is that it's intermittent, so I would have to use my browser with a new profile for a long time before I could confirm that the problem is actually fixed.

Decided to try Meerkat. Looks great from the USB. With Lucid installed on Dell Optiplex with Windows XP - worked out ok.Installed Maverick Meerkat from USB and now no OS at all. I only get a prompt to re-try booting or to enter set-up.I installed Meerkat to the existing Lucid partitions, a / and /home partition, but I'm not even getting as far as grub-menu at boot.In the first attempt the installer installed grub to sda, (the hdd), and that didn't work, so I tried re-installing with a separate /boot, (sda7), partition, and still no love.
One of the problems is that on the Dell there is a /dell utility partition at the beginning of the disk, so I can't really move that to put a /boot partition at the beginning.Oddly, Lucid had no such problem. Lucid installed and recognised Windows XP, but when I try the same install procedure with Meerkat I draw a blank.

I made the mistake of downloading a couple of tunes from Ubuntu One, with the result that my credit union put a hold on my credit card because of "strange traffic" with a site in England. I've got that straightened out, but it didn't improve my opinion of Ubuntu One -- which seems to me to be about as proactive as a pack of hyenas at getting its fangs into various aspects of my file system, including absurd "synchronization" with "the cloud" which "at my level" is "Still Free." The synchronization notice also takes up valuable real estate in my file system windows, and should not be there without being invited.
Moreover, Ubuntu One AUTOMATICALLY begins synchronizing SOMETHING without being bidden if I merely open System -> Preferences -> Ubuntu One! I despise this kind of paternalistic crap, and want it OFF my system! Ubuntu One, IMHO, is a beachhead on my bank account and I want to remove it ENTIRELY from my system. My question is, is it safe to remove ALL references to Ubuntu One in the Synaptic Package Manager? If not, how do I disable it COMPLETELY, so that it will never again be activated?I have already cancelled my subscription at the website. I want the Ubuntu One code on my Dell Inspiron 1525 to vanish, preferably without disabling Meerkat further.

I just installed MeerKat on a Compaq Presario 2100US with 1 gig of RAM. How do I set the time correctly? I checked the Compaq set up screen and time is correct there. The install asked for my time zone. I'm in Seattle area so chose Vancouver. Time now showing in systray is four hours off but can't find any way to re-set it?

Ibus is very familiar to some users. And they find only one way to use Ibus as their keyboard layout. But its not possible to use ibus on Maverick Meerkat by default. you need to follow some instruction to do that. Here I am telling how I have done this...
Go to System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager (you have to give your password) type " ibus-m17 " on search box. then just install the one appears. After installation the package, just close the synaptic. Now you are done to use Ibus.
Now go to System>Administration>Language Support (it may ask you to install the Language support, just click on the "Remind me later") Then select ' ibus ' from the "Keyboard input method system" under the Language tab.
Then close the window and restart the PC.
Thats the work I have done to get the iBus on Maverick Meerkat.

I am experiencing difficulty with the screen resolution on my Asus X51L laptop. Currently I am using Lucid and everything works perfectly but when I attempted to dual boot Meerkat the screen went out of sync. I have tried Meerkat both as a live CD and a full install and in both instances the display does not fill the screen. I attach a photo of the display in the hope that it will assist.
When I use the laptop at home I attach it to a 21 inch screen and everything works a treat and strangely enough when working with Meerkat and displaying it on the large screen it will properly display. This only confuses me further. I am due shortly to go for a trip and as the display is not correct am not prepared to show Ubuntu as being improperly displayed to others.

Is Ubuntu going to release a second version of Ubuntu 10.10 using Unity as well as keep the Maverick Meerkat version? I don't know about you, but I already hate the Unity version. It looks like the desktop at your ATM. This could be Ubuntu's Vista.

From the BBC site, if I try to download the desktop iPlayer, it tries to download Adobe Air installer, but says it "can't write the application to the hard disk", so it stops.
I've got the Flash player plugin installed, but not Flash 10, and I've tried to use the software centre to install Adobe Air from there, but it starts, runs for a couple of seconds, then stops. The same result if I try to download Flash 10.I've restarted and checked the installed software, but zilch.

I'm having frequent freezing issues within Ubuntu 10.10 and it's beginning to become a regular thing. I've come to find out that it only happens when the visual effects settings are at normal or extra. Everything will be fine for whatever amount of time but after a while the entire system freezes. I get no response from ANYTHING at all, not even the keyboard/mouse. This is really annoying and I'm not quite sure what to do. I'm mostly new to the whole Linux scene. Machine Specs:
Compaq Presario SR5250NX
Intel Pentium Dual Core @ 1.60 GHz
1GB Ram
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

Prior to 10.10 if I enter my password to gain administrative permissions, for example to check for updates in Update Manager, the escalated permissions remain in effect for a period of time. If I close out of Update Manager and invoke the Synaptic Package Manager within a couple of minutes I am not asked for my passwordDoes anyone know if the was SUPPOSED to change in 10.10? I have reproduced the phenomenon in both the 32 and 64 bit versions of 10.10.

I work at a television station and we recently purchased a System76 Meerkat ION with the intended purpose of using the HDMI out port for broadcast purposes. We have an existing AJA HA5 box which is capable of converting HDMI to HD-SDI (HD-SDI being the baseband standard in professional broadcasting).
The converter is only willing to accept the following values:
1920 x 1080 @ 29.97
1280 x 720 @ 59.94
I am wondering if it is possible to manually configure Xorg.conf (or whatever file is being edited by NVIDIA X Server Settings) to tell the HDMI output to only produce the latter resolution (1280 x 720).

I am using Lucid for last 6 month and I am really amazing for its stability of using. And I am a Desktop user. However, Yesterday I have downloaded the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat Desktop (32 Bit). I have made a Startup Disk using UBUNTU Startup Disk Creator for that .iso which I have downloaded yesterday. That is a USB Live Disk. But the sad news is its not being able to boot my PC. where my PC configuration is not so bad.
Pentium Dual Core E2200 @2.20 Ghz
Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2C motherboard
2GB DDR2 RAM with 800 bus speed
1TB HDD
(I also tried disconnecting the HDD and my DVD Rom, same problem arises) The boot screen is trying to boot the PC but its doing for a long time, for about 10 mins, nothing reports it. I have press ESC to see wats happening beside this. Then I have seen a text there. Which is similar to the below (may have some spelling mistakes) "Process 283 Glib warning getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)" I hve checked the .iso SUM several times, where everything is ok.

After installing Meerkat, some windows close (and take their apps along with them into oblivion E.g., when I run Applications -> System Tools -> Sysinfo, selecting the FIRST MENU OPTION, i.e., System, causes the app to close suddenly.
There are other small examples, in Firefox, e.g., but I'm not compiling a dossier here. Aside from the butt-ugly Ubuntu font, there don't seem to be (m)any major issues. Well, EXCEPT THAT MY WALLPAPERS have vanished, but I'm sure Q.A.
