I have a lenovo T43 laptop.I have recently installed Fedora 14 on it.I find that the wi-fi is not turning on (the lamp on the panel remains off.) I have tried issuing commands like iwlist, etc. but it stubbornly remains off.

I have a laptop with a broken lid, it is beyond repair so I want to make something out of it. I have unscrewed some screws and I have managed to swivel the screen around, so it looks like a tablet (screen over keyboard - not glued - yet!)I want to change this laptop thing into a News/Calendar/Weather station, that turns on automatically (I can set this in the BIOS) and start running. As I just mentioned, I want it to show News, My Calendar from Google Calendar, Weather and maybe my email. Heres a mock up of what I am thinking of -
Do you guys know any programs that would allow me to create this? The computer is running Windows XP and can be changed to Ubuntu if needed. Windows 7 is a no no (wireless driver is not compatible).
I'd like your input on this. A toshiba laptop screen goes blank after few seconds(from turning on).
At first i thought it was fan that was out and once it got hot enough it cut the laptop off like my old Acer did.
But after close examination i noticed that it continues working. HD still spining and fan blows..
Example: Turn on>Hit F2 to go in to Bios> Bios screen appears>Before i have a chance to do anything it geos blank but continues working> I hit Cntrl ALt Del> it resets and screen comes right back up>second later it goes blank again.
ALSO the toshiba logo and whole screen seems to have a red tint to it.
I also get a media test error but that is likely from hard drive not being there during some of the tests.
DO you think it can be an LCD Backlight issue? or possibly video card?
I have a netbook (Acer Aspire One) I'm running Slackware 13. and usually, I prefer to connect an external monitor. When I switch my machine on with the monitor connected, the display is duplicated on both screens and since I just want the netbook's screen to be off and only see the display on the external monitor, I can doxrandr --output LVDS --off
Great! However, it's a hassle to do this every time I log in and I'd like to automate the process if possible. I did some googling and I found that if you want to automate xrandr commands, you can put a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ (see this). I wrote the following script to automate my xrandr commands and since the Xsession.d directory didn't exist, I tried creating it. The script was called 45custom-xrandr_settings, as the one on the RandR wiki is called the same.

I'm concerned about security of having a LAMP server on my laptop as having any server makes the system less secure. However, if I were to create a new partition and install a lamp server on that and only use it when offline, would the security of my main partition be affected at all?

There is a backstory that is not that relevant, but in a nutshell, I got this tiny low-power computer to be my voice since my speech is impaired. Only the latest Debian has the tools I needed.
After much searching, suggested that I remove the touchpad driver; the command as root: # rmmod psmouse
Did the trick. On the 900A, the protocol that handles the touchpad is the PS/2. Removing the psmouse driver module does not affect my USB mouse, so now I can use my USB mouse and type away with my left hand and bumping into the touchpad doesn't screw things up. In other words: Success. (I am being as explicit as possible so that all search engines will find this.

Is it possible to turn off (and eventually back on) all superfluous process during gaming ? As an ex-win xp user, there was an app called "game booster", i think, that did this.
The process i have in mind are things like fancy compiz settings, dockbar X, and any upgrades that might be taking place in the background.
Again, it is important that i can restart these functions after kicking super-mutant ***.
I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 on my PC. Installation went smoothly, and I can boot it and log in.
If i leave it there running, nothing happens, but as soon as i try to run an application (Firefox, Update Manager, etc), the screen turns off and I can't do anything else anymore except reboot.
I was able to apply the latest updates using apt-get update from the terminal (one of the very few apps that doesn't turn the screen off), but can't get rid of the problem, what can i do?
My PC is a Intel Core i5 PC with a Nvidia Gefore 210 graphics card.
I was able to install the proprietary drivers for Nvidea, no change. Both Unity and "Ubuntu Classic" have this issue

When the temp reaches 65c the fan comes on, but never shuts off. The fan does cool the cpu.If remove the module, and then modprobe it, the fan stops until the cpu reaches 65c.how to get the fan to shut off properly?
I downloaded the *.iso for a Fedora 10 Live KDE installation. It is currently on my hard drive. I tried burning it to a CD with Roxio using two different methods. The first one was not a bootable method. So I checked the Roxio documentation and burned the image that way. In burning an *.iso to a bootable image on a disc, Roxio asks for three different file types, none of which are *.iso. I selected my *.iso because that was all I had. Then I burned it as a bootable to a CD.
When I tried to boot it, I got a black screen with a message at the top left reading something like there was no operating system available. I thought that was strange, and I do not know what to do.
I am looking to turn off Plasma Workspace and keep it off! Today I was informed by a family member that their desktop had drastically changed. After investigating this, I had noticed that they were now running what was called Plasma Workspace. I am truly baffled right now as to how this was activated/turned on for only 1 out of 5 users on my computer. None of them are computer savvy, so it would also help me out considerably if I knew how this was turned on without the use of the terminal.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu 10.4 trouble free for the last week or so with the exception of one problem. Without warning, my computer shuts off. When I turn the computer back on, it skips the log in page. The turn off is very abrupt and happens without warning. It happened twice when I first installed the OS and has not happened at all until today when it happened twice again. Is this a common issue. It seems like a very odd way for a computer to crash.

Since I don't have any BT stuff to connect and really want to get all the battery life I can out of this thing I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with KDE, if there is a plasma widget I could use to make sure its disabled? There is no BT icon in the notifications area on the bar.

View 5 Replies View Relatedthe screen is still on but it's like the computer is going idle or something, It makes watching tv shows/movies pretty hard. I have to constantly keep moving the mouse. I have a pentium 4 with about 600 megs of ram. Latest version of Xubuntu.I went into screensaver options and power management options. It's set to two hours before the screensaver comes on, and never to put the screen idle but the screen seems to do it every 20-30 minutes.I'm not entirely sure where to look now, i don't think there could be anything wrong with the hardware, otherwise moving the mouse wouldn't make the screen come back on.

But when I press the fn + f2 nothing happens( is anything suppose to happen) I tried to edit the rc.inet1.conf file to match my network settings, and then restarted it still nothing. Maybe someone could shed some light my way. I will keep reading through forums to see if I find answer. I also installed the wicd package from the slackware cd, it starts up but shows no networks. Guess the fact that my wireless radio isn't started, that is why I don't see any networks.

LOLz, I got it now, This computer has 2 nics installed! Thats why the link stat was "Link detected: no"
I moded my code to pertain to eth1, the connected port. Eh, anyhow, Im still not sold on this problem being solved, the connection eth1 seems to work fine at 100BaseT/Full but I loose connectivity when trying to use 1000BaseT/Full despite the nic showing it as a supported mode.
