I am trying to make a script that would allow me to transfer files to one computer to another. We have multiple computers which needs the files to be transferred regularly. The script is listed below. The script is ok when I tried to run only for one file but when I use wildcards nothing happens.

I'm trying to mirror an apt-cacher-ng cache between two computers. I have apt-cacher-ng installed on my laptop, and I have another machine running apt-cacher-ng. In order to keep them both up to date with each other and to make sure all the computers have all the updates, I've been trying to find effective ways to keep them matched.
- Unison looks like what I want, it would delete files that are deleted, and it would add files that are added. (the assumption is if they're deleted from one, they'd be deleted from others).
- Rsync seemed quite a bit easier, especially with the advanced permissions issues. Apt-cacher-ng uses a user called apt-cacher-ng.
Instead of giving root an ssh password, I wanted to just ssh as apt-cacher-ng. Then I can still get the files over the network, but without the root account being open.
So I ran:
passwd apt-cacher-ng
and when I sshed, it looked like it was working until it logged me out (almost immediately). So that's not working. What am I missing? Maybe there's a better tool then rsync for this?

This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed 10.04 on both my laptop and my desktop computer. the desktop was pre-installed with 9.10 then upgraded to 10.04, the laptop was pre-installed with 9.04then upgraded to 10.04. There are a few differences in the look of the desktop but the most notable is the fact that the window controls for the desktop are on the left and the windows controls for the laptop are on the right . Any thoughts as to how this happened or what went wrong. Both were upgraded at the same time.

Ubuntu sees the icons for each computer in the "network" tab of "places" and can access the shared files 1 of those desktops, no problem, but trying to access the other one gets the error "Unable to mount location-failed to retrieve share list from server" I have checked the XP computers and can't find what may be different about them.

I have transferred those with less than 2GB (that is the size of my usb-flashdrives) to my netbook (with opensuse-11.3 OS) with the help of usb-flashdrives. Try and keep them the same
Accept that they have different 'personalities' and branch off their on way
However, I've chosen the first option because I like to keep my files and settings the same on both computers. I am in the process of extracting a tar archive I made of my entire desktop's hard drive (9.7GiB) onto my laptop, so after this is done they will be exactly the same. However, upon turning the laptop on with my freshly-copied system, things will become different. If I take the laptop to school, for example, and do stuff there, then come back home, and do stuff on my desktop, how can I sync these computers (both ways!) with the new changes at the end of the day/week/whatever?
I want to transfer files (a music folder) between two Linux computers. After searching for the best way to do this, I've seen that there are lots of ways of doing this. I know this has been asked a lot, everywhere and all the time. The main problem with this is that there is no clear, recent consensus on one best way to do this task in 2011 for Linux beginners (even depending on some parameters).
So in the spirit of the Stack Exchange websites, I want this not to be related to my particular situation, but more of a guide to others as well on how to transfer files between two Linux computers over a local network. I think a wiki would be useful for many.

I have two computers. One has UNR installed and the other Karmic. I back up my home folder from Karmic monthly. Is there any reason why I could not just copy the home folder from Karmic over the UNR home folder to synchronize my computers? I wasn't sure if UNR might not like this idea...

We have 5 computers networked with 9.04 installed. On some days, when you click on Place -> Network, then all the computers will show. On other days, like today, it does not show. However, one can ping them and I have been able to print to one computer which has the printer attached. SAMBA is installed on the computers for file and printer sharing.

I was looking at the ssh that comes with Ubuntu and been trying to get it to work but don't know what I'm doing wrong. I type: ssh username@computername and it give me a little info. Don't know what I'm suppose to do then. I looked at the network folder on my laptop and it seem to see it but everytime I click on it ask for a password and I can't get in since I don't know the right password. Computer A has an external USB hard drive attached, partitioned ext3 and mounted to a folder in computer A's home folder. Computer C is running Vista. I installed Samba, and computer C can access all the files on both computers A and B. But using Samba, computers A and B can't see each other OR computer C. That's not really important to me, but they can't
So I installed NFS and got computers A and B talking that way. I like NFS better. It's faster than Samba. BUT, computer B can't access computer A's USB drive, and I need it to do that. When I'm using computer B and I click on the folder the drive is mounted to, the file manager just shows the folder as empty.

1. In System > Preferences > Network Connections
and under IPv4 tab, change Method to Link-Local Only.
The problem for me is I'm using Xubuntu 9.04 (on 1 of them) and I don't have "Network Connections". Is there a way to get this utility in Xubuntu 9.04 so I can set the method to 'Link local only' ?
