Software :: Remove Usplash From An Unbootable Operating System?

Feb 24, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Alpha on my computer.was running fine until I installed usplash. Now when I boot up I get a message saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" and a list of options. When I select any of them and press Enter I get a blank screen. I can't even load a command line. I want to remove usplash to see if that fixes the problem, but I would have to do it from another OS. How could I do that? My other operating systems are Ubuntu Karmic and OpenSUSE.

Ubuntu :: Operating System Lose Data During A Power Failure As Windows Operating System?

Jan 13, 2010

Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?

(If yes.) This has not come up before but I'm going to be doing some work I don't want to lose.

Could you either point me to a backup tutorial or give me the quick overview of preserving stuff with Ubuntu?

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Update Renders System Unbootable?

Nov 22, 2010

My mom's computer is no longer bootable. I was thinking of attempting to fix it later on this week and am thinking of doing a chroot and updating via a live CD hoping that an even newer update solves the problem but I have some doubts of success. Does anyone have any information about this issue so that I can be better prepared to fix it? Also, I thought I should mention that I tried the second newest kernel to see if that would make it work. It didn't. The error is something along the lines of having the /dev/diskuuid change. If I'm correct, Ubuntu changed the disk's name and is trying to boot the old name. It's dropping to an initramfs shell (not the regular terminal where you can work miracles ).

Slackware :: Custom Kernel, Now System Is Unbootable?

Jun 26, 2011

I compiled my own custom kernel for the first time. I tinkered with different options, nothing to difficult. I actually didn't expect it to work the first time.

I had kept the original lilo boot config just in case something was to go wrong. Now when I try to boot the system, I always get a "VFS: cannot mount root system on (8,3)". I googled this and found that my kernel did not support my root filesystem (btrfs). So I made an initrd with btrfs kernel module, but it didn't help. I then got a string of errors about how /dev could not be mounted.

My question is two-fold. First, how come when I configure the system back to when it was first installed, it still won't boot? Im using the same kernel (2.6.37.6-smp). Second, how can I get myself out of this rut without reinstalling?

lilo.conf

Code:
lba32
append=" vt.default_utf8=0"
boot=/dev/sda
vga = normal
# Linux - Slackware
image = /boot/vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.37.6-smp
root = /dev/sda3
label = Linux
read-only

BTW, I have been maintenancing the system by chrooting into the device off of my slackware boot disk. Im on slack 13.37

Any other alternative to show an image when the system is shutting down

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Upgrade 9.10 -> 10.04: System Unbootable

May 4, 2010

I've just reported a launchpad bug report about my desktop system being unbootable after upgrade to lucid lynx. [URL]... I opened this thread to ask if someone else experienced a similar problem and for collecting information and workarounds (none yet) about this quite serius problem. The system has an nvidia graphic card and proprietary drivers were installed before the upgrade. However I'm not sure the problem is related to this. FYI, the system booted regularly from a usb stick with ubuntu lucid lynx. SO the problem is in the upgrade path.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Hung Now System Unbootable

May 4, 2010

I tried running an upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.4 last night, and things seemed to be going smoothly. The upgrade progress was nearly complete, and I wandered off for a while to let it run. When I came back, I had nothing but an orange screen and and unresponsive system. I left it alone all night with the hopes that something would happen, but this morning nothing had changed so I hard restarted the system.

Ubuntu 10.4 appears in GRUB, but the system cannot boot and exits with a kernel panic and the message "vfs unable to mount root fs on unknown-block" I was able to boot to a 10.4 LiveCD, and I can browse all of my files from there. What can I do to get this system back up an running? I have dozens of user account and a lot of customization (it acts as a webserver with a wiki for a gaming website running on it, among other things), so I really really don't want to do a fresh install and lose all my data and customizations.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10: Restore Unbootable System / Freeze?

Jul 11, 2010

Ubuntu Installation :: Crash During 10.04 Install Left System Unbootable

Jun 6, 2010

My son kicked out power during the install phase of 10.04 (about half complete) and now the system is unbootable.

The boot process dies shortly after starting fsck with the error:

init: plymouth main process (382) killed by SEGV signal

So this looks bad (to me), segmentation violations are never good.

So does anyone have any suggestions for booting and completing the upgrade?

If I'm SOL on this OS image is there a way to image over the OS and save my data?

The only option I see now is to buy a new disk, image onto it, mount my current disk and copy my data. (takes money and time)

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Update Of 10.10 Results In Unbootable System?

Feb 4, 2011

yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.

The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.

This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.

Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy.

General :: End Of Support For Mint6 - Safely Remove The Partitions And Duplicate Operating Systems

Apr 14, 2010

The bad news comes that active support for Mint6 is set to end Apr. 30. The worse news is I don't know what to do about it. Complicating this is that I have about 5 drive partitions and duplicate Mint6 operating systems because of password problems and just partitioning the drive and rebooting the OS instead of trying to fix the issue. I hear good things about Mint8, but my 80 Gig drive is getting pretty thin on partitions. I know there must be a way to safely remove the partitions and duplicate operating systems. I just don't know how to do it.

Ubuntu :: No Operating System Found?

Sep 2, 2010

I got a new laptop today and the first thing I did was to install Ubuntu as a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything seemed to work the first time I loaded Ubuntu after installation, and Windows also seemed to work. Then, Windows Maintenance said there was possible disk corruption, so I restarted the computer and now I get this error when trying to load. After reading around about similar problems I think it might be a problem with the grub bootloader. It is 64-bit if that makes a difference.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Into Operating System

May 17, 2011

The issue I've been having is vague so I'm unsure if anyone can help me but it's worth a shot. The other day I was booting my laptop and this is what ended up happening and has continued to occur on successive boots:[URL] Each time it boots this is how the screen is characterized. For example: [URL] After this, continuing the boot process, the screen does this--which makes sense since the Kubuntu boot screen is this color and this where it should typically appear (I installed Kubuntu some months prior to this issue.): [URL]

After this screen, the monitor goes blank and becomes unresponsive. It usually flashes to black and then appears to turn on--becoming a slightly lighter shade of black.

Then, nothing. I can't go into tty. I've tried booting with a live CD but the issue persists and hangs, saying: soft lockup cpu 0 stuck for 61s. I've tried taking my laptop apart but I'm not familiar enough with hardware to do anything productive.

Assume I have a computer on which I want to use ubuntu for a while (single boot). Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.

Fedora :: Can Use All-in-one Printer With LINUX Operating System?

Nov 24, 2009

Can I use my all-in-one printer with LINUX Operating System? KODAK All-in-One Printers are designed to to work with WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS VISTA, WINDOWS 7 Operating Systems and with MAC OS. Because of its open-source nature, LINUX OS requires a complex, dedicated support team. LINUX OS represents a very small percentage of installed operating systems in the U.S. As a result, costs for ongoing support and a dedicated support team are not justified at this time.

As Kodak continues to launch products, and as updates are made to LINUX OS, launching LINUX Drivers would require ongoing support and driver updates to Kodak's software. Customer support teams are focusing efforts on current issues concerning the more prevalent WINDOWS and MAC OS; adding support for LINUX OS would take resources away from these issues. Compatibility information for KODAK All-in-One Printers is printed on the retail package so that our customers can be aware of the printer's hardware and software requirements at the time or purchase. For more information about specifications and compatibility, visit KODAK All-in-One Printers.
