I intend on installing a version of Freebsd 8.2 under a virtual machine running on centos 5.6.The dvd image image is FREEBSD-8.2....xz. I would like to uncompress it so that I can burn it to a DVD, but have never confronted such a format. Can someone suggest which utility under Linux would be used to uncompress it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly simple setup for my Network attached storage. I have a 1TB external hard drive connected to my Asus RT-N16 router through USB. I have enabled file sharing in the router, and thus the hard drive shows up on the network as a shared folder. No hassles, I can read and write to it.
Because I want to use this hard drive for networked backups, I tried to get it to mount on boot with fstab. Here is the line in my fstab file :

It mounts fine, no problems, and once again I'm able to read and write files to it. The problem occurs when I try to access the mounted drive and uncompress an archive file for the duplicity backup program. It gives me a list of messages showing that all the files inside the archive failed to uncompress because of error messages like these :

If I try to extract the same archive by manually going to Network > RT-N16 (Router) > Shared Folder, it extracts fine. But I need this folder to be mounted on boot because I use it very frequently. I tried changing smbfs to cifs and it still didn't work. Please not that my knowledge of samba, network storage and file systems is very basic. I tried searching the internet for more information about this but wasn't able to find much information that pertains to this particular problem. Hoping the linux pros here could give me some pointers ..
How to install ImageMagick on slackware? I can't run ./configure after I uncompress the file. I was trying to install a software and it says Imagemagick is not installed but when if I run identify -version there is some kind of version displayed but I'm not sure if it is installed.

I have a folder and its contents with the following permissions: 2750 (sguid bit). With this I ensure that a newly created file or folder inside that folder will adopt the SGUID. The problem is that if I copy files into that folder, these copied files don't adopt the SGUID. So I have to execute constantly the command: chgrp -R thegroup nameofthefolder everytime I copy or uncompress something into that folder. Is there any way to achieve this (force the SGUID even in copy and uncompress commands) automatically?

Being paranoid, I created iso-files from the burnt DVD-R and the two burnt CD-R to verify integrity.
The iso-file of the DVD-R was identical to the downloaded image. Both iso-files created from the CD-R were different in size.
The original size of openSUSE-11.3-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso is 719.323.136 Bytes.
I only got 718.938.112 Bytes when recreating an ISO-file from my CD-R.
The CD-R is from Sony. When the length of my ISO-file doesn't correspond to the downloaded one, the checksum file verification doesn't work.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI work for a company that makes portable devices running Linux and I was recently asked to make the underlying file system read-only for "security" purposes. Since the distribution is based on LinuxFromScratch, I know that very little writing happens at run time. So, even if the device runs on a usb flash device, I doubt that putting the root file system RO will be that beneficial. I am actually more concerned about a process actually breaking because it cannot open a file in RW mode than a process going rogue and filling the root file system with log files, etc. I'd really like to ear what kind of advantages disadvantages there really is with read-only file-systems.

In a terminal I ran chmod +x PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and then sudo ./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and I get an error "./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh: 2: Syntax error: "(" unexpected" . The quotation marks are my own. Is the file corrupted? One of my lugmates thinks it might be a shar file, but Karmic says that it is a shell script. Another friend says that it is too large to be a shell script. Here is the code:

I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message

So when I click on delete I get another error message:

At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.
I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.

I am curious if perhaps I am doing something wrong extracting pages from a pdf doc using pdftk and creating a new file. I am only extracting the odd pages from the file and outputting them to a new file that is now only 20 pages instead of the input's 40 pages, yet the new output file is still 1.4Mb in size, the same as the original.
It seems strange to extract only half the pages of a large document and end up with a result that is the same size. how to streamline the resulting pdf's using pdftk?
BTW this is the command I am using, in case perhaps I am missing an option to optimize file size or something:

I have recently switched to using LXDE on my PC and I am on the whole pretty pleased with it. However,PCMan is giving me a really odd problem. Some of the files/folders are being displayed in the wrong order where they contain numbers. They are being ordered by their first digit not the whole number.

Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.
