Software :: Unable To Install Or Run Live CD Ubuntu 9 Or 10

Sep 24, 2010

Ive been trying since a week or so just simply install the last version of Ubuntu 10 and the Ubuntu 9, but without success. I could not even start with a live CD. I even created a USB a start from there but same situation. The facts are that, ubuntu Cd or USB loads, it shows menu and let me select install or try ubuntu, then starts processing. and then gets stuck with a blank screen ( dark, actually ) I try to find in the F4 option to start with "safe graphics mode" but this option is not there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install Kubuntu 10.4 - Unable To Find A Medium Containing A Live File System

Aug 15, 2010

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.

He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Install - Live CD From Usb Stick

Jul 11, 2011

I have done a big big mistake (I could beat myself up for that) with my netbook and now I am sitting here, not getting openSUSE installed on it.

I wanted to try another netbook linux and installed (more by accident than intentionally) Easy Peasy Linux. This system is not bad, but cannot work with the wireless adapter in my netbook. However, I then wanted to install openSUSE 11.4 again, which ran fine on the netbook. But the install always gets stuck in different stages and I don´t know why.

Sometimes a failure message comes up: "filesystem is read only, rebooting in 120 seconds", but I am not really sure if this is for the harddrive or the usb stick. In other occasions, the bootprocess until install gets stuck at "starting KDM". Nothing happens then... thats it.

I already have reformatted the usb stick and copied the openSUSE Live CD via Imagewriter on it again... no success.

So now I am really confused, because I don´t know if there is something wrong with the harddrive? Or is it the stick itself? How can I find this out?

If it is the harddrive, how can I at least refomat it? Remember: no CD or DVD drive, just USB stick...

How can I find out if the image on the stick is ok? I already tested the install media and it said: "checksum ok"

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot From Live USB On HP Laptop

Jul 26, 2011

A few weeks ago I installed Fedora Linux 64-bit on my HP dv4-1428ca laptop which was running Windows 7. At that time I created a Live USB using the fedora-live usb tool and it booted fine. A couple days ago I decided to try out openSUSE, so I downloaded the 64-bit live-cd image and tried to create a live usb using the SUSEStudio ImageWrite provided in the documentation. The tool kept giving me an error message, so I decided to try unetbootin instead. However, when I tried to boot the live usb on my HP laptop, it presented me with the message.

"SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 COPYRIGHT (C) 1994-2011 H. PETER ANVIN ET AL" with a blinking cursor and nothing else. I've tried a variety of alternative programs for creating live USB's (pendrivelinux, linux live usb creator, unebootin), and verified the checksum of the iso file for openSUSE 11.4 64-bit, and still was not able to get past the "SYSLINUX..." message on my HP laptop. However, the live USB does boot on the other computers in my house. Interestingly, if I create a live USB using the tool provided by Fedora, it will boot fine. However the Fedora Live USB tool cannot be used for other distros.

Specs:
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core
4GB Ram
ATI Radeon 3200 Graphics
320 GB Hard Drive

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Access Internet Installing From Live USB

Nov 6, 2010

Installing from Live USB: Installing from USB on my desktop (used this method for laptop install) goes without a hitch. EXCEPT, I notice there is no support for my wireless card chipset (Atheros 7413, used /bin/lspci to find). I download the drivers for Linux, but I need Make to build the drivers...ok. I download the Make files from my laptop, make coffee, slap the makefiles onto a flash drive and run the configure file on my desktop version of SUSE. Whoops, need a c compiler (odd that openSUSE did not come with gcc? bit confused on that). If you can't tell by now, I've been using linux for less than a month so I am what you would call a noob? After the lack of c compiler, I drove to my office to snag some DVDs to download the DVD iso image, hoping it would have some form of c compiler/make packaged, since the description does say the DVD has more software (can't find any prebuilt versions of either...?)

Installing from DVD: This was my next step. I wrote the iso image to a DVD and proceeded to boot from DVD. The installer fails at the system analysis, saying it cannot "create a repository". writing the iso to a second DVD produces the same result. Googling has not yielded a solution. tl;dr can't use openSUSE on my desktop because my wireless chipset is not suported by SUSE. I need Make to build the drivers, but I need a c compiler to compile Make, and I need the internet to get both for my machine.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Without Live CD ?

Apr 5, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 fom a Live CD. My system is a Dell Optiplex 745 that originally had Windows XP installed. Ubuntu is the only OS. Windows XP was removed.

The sytem appears to be running normaly.

When I shutdown (not restart) and then power cycle the computer, I see the Dell splash screen then I get the message: "Errorauto-sensing secondary master hard disk drive. Strike F! key to continue, F2 to run the setup." F1 repeats the message. F2 enters the BIOS setup but does not lead to a fix.

If I place the Live CD in the tray and boot from that, I get to the Ubunt install directory.

If I click "Check disc for defects", then run the check. (I can even interupt the check without completing by hitting ESC), then the system reboots.

I see the Dell Splashscreen.
I see the Ubuntu Live CD menu
I choose "Boot from first hard disk"
Then Ubuntu loads perfectly. I enter my username's passord.
The system runs fine until the next time I shutdown.

How do I get the system to boot directly without needing the LiveCD?

Apple :: Unable To Boot Mac After Trying Out Ubuntu Live Cd / Sort It?

Jun 12, 2010

I have a serious problem! I downloaded and burnt Ubuntu 10.04 and then chose it as start up volume in Snow Leopard's start up disk preference dialogue and although Ubuntu runs successfully from the cd (I'm typing from it now) I can no longer boot into OS X at all.

I have tried all of the different short cuts at boot up to no avail, even trying 2 keyboards. It insists on looking for the Ubuntu disk and if it is not in the drive comes up with an error message stating that a system disk cannot be found.

Is there any kind of tool on Ubuntu that will let me change the start up disc/interact with the Mac's efi settings? I previously had refit installed but this disappeared just before I booted the cd, is it worth using the live cd?

I tried booting from a Tiger dvd but it wouldn't let me do so, it just returned me to the ominous "System disk not found" message.

Does anyone have any kind of idea? Perhaps some kind of shell script that will reinstall refit? I'm guessing that any kind of dvd designed for PC will prob boot, any kind of OS X recovery disk compatible with MBR available?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Get Usb Live Boot On Netbook

Nov 5, 2010

On a Lenovo thinkpad S12 2959 and a kingston DataTraveler 101 OK I have been having a lot of strange issues while trying to install the current 10.10 netbook version of Ubuntu.I followed the instructions right below the download for the iso.Basically download the usb live creator and use it.So I did (with no persistence set) and it seemed to work.I tried booting from it and it worked, except that I have to keep pressing keys, I used the enter key and it worked. If I stop pressing enter no progress is made. Then at the end their is some error about no persistent space being available.

and now it is booted, so I try to install a driver and it hangs.so I try to install the OS, and it hangs. So I try to exit and it finally gets to the next screen in the installation after I tell it to exit, but then hangs when trying to get the the next one and it will not continue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Resize Partition With Gparted On Live CD?

Feb 17, 2011

I recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space. Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)

The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing

Ubuntu :: Installing From 11.04 Live Cd - Unable To Stat The Mount Point

Jul 1, 2011

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a desktop and am trying to install ndiswrapper. I don't have a wired connection to the router, but I have managed to use ndiswrapper successfully on other Linux live distributions which already had them installed (eg, Linux Mint 9). By inserting the Ubuntu 11.04 Live Cd and adding the cdrom in Synaptic's "Settings > Repositories" menu, I can find it in the list of packages, but when I try to install ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 and ndiswrapper-common I get a few error messages. First, a notice pops up saying: "Some of the packages could not be retrieved from the server(s). Do you want to continue, ignoring these packages?". I guessed this is due to lack of an internet connection, so I selected "yes" and got an error box that reads:

"E: Internal Error, No file name for ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04_Natty Narwhal_-Release i386 (20110427.1)]/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.56+r2729-1_i386.deb
Unable to stat the mount point /media/Ubuntu4011.0440i386/ - stat (2: No such file or directory)"

This system has two hard drives and a cdrom drive. I've error checked the Live cd, and it came up clean. Please, can someone give me a hand getting Ubuntu to mount the cd? PS: I've downloaded the ndiswrapper files from sourceforge onto a thumbstick (version 1.56). Is there a way I can install them from the stick?

Software :: Unable To Access Hdd Direct Or From Live CD

Jun 8, 2010

I've got an Hitachi Deskstar 164GB IDE drive which I've somehow managed to upset while attempting to swap distros. I'm guessing its lost the MBR as I can't get a PC to see it except in the BIOS. The BIOS tells me that the primary master has 164GB, Cylinders 65535, Head 16, Precomp 0, Landing zone 65534 and Sector 255. (my understanding of that info is very limited). The PC won't boot direct from the hdd and a live Knoppix disc can't see it. Trying fdisk -l produces no list. (Naturally, I can't install another distro on it either).
