Software :: Ubuntu On A Dell Insoiron E1705 - Boot
May 28, 2010
I installed Ubuntu onto my computer, and after awhile i decided to completely delete my windows side, so i turned around and installed ubuntu fully and formatted the whole hard drive, what happened was after i did that, it said failing reallocated sector count. I poked my father who has a degree in computers, and said i had to defrag or reformat the hard drive, now both sound crazy to me, but if he said i should jump off a cliff, i would salute him and say right away sir. So after looking up how to defrag it, found out it didn't need defragging, i turned around, backed up my personal files, and tried to put the ubuntu disks...
found out it didn't want to run from disk, so i told my dad, he said pop in the repair disk for it. I replied that I didn't have one, he asked if i had any repair disks, I told him i had an acer 2420 repair disk. He said that would work, I tried it, it installed everything after a few minor issues saying it needed to reformat the drive. So i followed the step by step directions of the disk, and it did what it would do. Now, I boot it up, and it's still running on the ext3 format and it now says
[Code]....

Would Suse run well on Dell E1705 laptop? I am currently running Ubuntu 9.10 and it's OK except it's buggy as h3ll when it comes to sound issues. Have been troubleshooting for months to no avail and ready to try another Distro.

When I installed Lucid, it created a sound problem. I have a Dell Inspiron e1705. The issue is the subwoofer and the other two speaker in my system do not work in tandem. In prior Ubuntu releases I would fix this problem by making the volume up and volume down button control but the subwoofer and the two speakers (Master+PCM). But with Lucid, I don't seem to have the option to set up my audio due to the "simplification" of the audio bar. I downloaded the Gnome ALSA mixer from the repository, but it doesn't have the function I need either.
Something else I can DL to allow me to get my audio to work? I'm loving everything else in this release, please down let me down! Oh, I've been on ubuntu for 2 years, so I'm not retarded, feel free to give me complicated instruction, but GUI ones are preferred(I remember them in the long run).

I'm trying to boot my Dell Mini 12 from a USB boot disk with the ubuntu-9.10-alternate-lpia.iso image installed (I've also tried ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso). I turn the machine on, press F12 to get to the boot menu, then select the USB disk. After this I just get a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen and nothing else happens.

When I installed Slackware 13.37 for the first time, there was no problem. Everything worked very well - as expected from this great distro.
But, the LILO won't detect Windows installation correctly. So I tried to edit it using liliconfig, where I wrongly entered the entry for Linux. So without further messing around with the system, I went for reinstalling the whole system.
Now when I chose 'Linux' in LILO menu, Some initial startup scripts ran correctly - like detecting and mounting the root and non-root file systems.
But then the suddenly screen went black. It happened so fast, then and again, that I couldn't take a look at what's wrong.

The disc is fine I have installed using the CD on an Acer Laptop without any trouble what so ever. However now I need to install it on a Dell Latitude D505.It was detected and started the disc and show Ubuntu with the five dots loading screen. And then it goes black, with the laptop on. The menu with options like Install, defect test etc. can't be seen.In response to this I installed it inside Windows and that seemed to be ok, so I restarted the laptop and selected Ubuntu from the boot menu and does the dot loading screen and then black.I have searched Google and it is just threads that end up dead.

I have a Dimension 3000 with 2GB RAM, a 500 GB disk with two, 250 GB partitions, one for XP and one for Linux. The machine has a 1 GB Ethernet expansion card to replace the 10/100 MB integrated Ethernet card. The BIOS was upgraded to A03, the latest version. My initial attempt to boot the Live CD of Kubuntu 10.04.2 32-bit desktop left me with a blank screen, the CD-ROM drive stopped and the hard disk light on. I used the power button reset to re-gain control of the machine. On the next try, I removed the "quiet splash --" from the end of the boot options, and the machine got much further, but did much complaining about sr0 which I believe is a reference to a software RAM drive.
I went through the BIOS setup screen (hit F2 on boot to access) and under "Integrated devices:Network Interface controller" I turned off the built in network interface since the machine is using the plug-in card mentioned above. I also put the floppy disk drive at the end of the "Boot sequence" parameter. I rebooted again with the same deletion of the "quiet splash --" from the end of the boot options and the boot took me to the desktop!
Alas, when I tried to install 10.04.2 from the desktop, the installation died at the 15% point with "[Errno 5] Input/output error". The included explanation pointed at problems with either the hard drive (brand new in my case) or the CD-ROM drive or the CD itself. I'm too tired right now to pursue this further, but I will try burning a new CD at a lower speed as suggested by the error's help information.
I'm also still concerned about the earlier complaints about sr0. It is conceivable that the problem with copying the files to the hard disk could relate to problems with a RAM buffer that is used in the copying process. I mention this to remind myself to pursue that as a possible culprit if re-burning the CD doesn't help.

I'm trying to boot Live Debian (on a usb stick) on a Dell XPS ('Developers Edition' aka 9343). From what I've read about the status of on this hardware [URL] and about Debian Live (https://www.debian.org/CD/live/) it sounds like this may be possible, but I haven't figured it out. I don't know how to deal with the bios &| uefi settings.
I created the boot stick with dd if=debian-live-8.3.0-amd64-mate-desktop+nonfree.iso of=/dev/sdd1 bs=4M; sync

I've never tried installing any other operating system on my desktop so I'm not sure if it's a 9.10 bug (probably not), but whenever I choose any of the options after the ubuntu cd has been loaded at startup it goes to a black screen with the underscore at the top, and promptly reboots. At this point in time I can just boot back into windows or get to the same selection screen off of the cd.I've tried burning 3 seperate cd's and at the moment and trying to boot them on my laptop (but not working... hrm). I'm thinking about redownloading the iso in a couple minutes.

I tried to update to 2.6.31-20 kernel but I think I messed it up, because when I click on it in the GRUB it starts to load but then it goes back to the dell boot up screen and I have to use the older one in order to get onto ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 through the update manager and now I can't boot into the OS. I receive these two errors:
error: no suitable mode found.
error: unknown command 'terminal'.
After these two errors. Screen flashes with the red/white loading circles and Ubuntu logo. After that just goes into a black screen.

nomodeset and i915.modeset=0 take me to a $ prompt. I have also tried xforcevesa to no avil.
when I try startx from $ prompt i get
(EE) VESA (0): no valid modes
(EE) Screen(s) found, bout none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error: no screens found
I have seen forums that state editing xorg.conf. But I cannot boot to the os to get it installed so I can edit the file.

I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.

I find myself in unfamiliar territory. I am attempting to get a Dell M610 (in an M100e) running Ubuntu 9.1 64bit to talk to a Dell EMC Fibre Channel Array. The Dell has an Emulex card in it and it appears that the driver is loaded OK. What I am not sure on is what to do next! I have the SAN end configured but how do I get my LUN mounted on Ubuntu ?

After installing Fedora 11 from the dvd I booted.
I was first shown a blank blue screen with a mouse pointer then back to a text login.
At the login prompt it would not accept my keystrokes. Ctrl and backspace showed as a 2 character combination but alphanumeric keystrokes did not show.
I'm using a Dell C610 laptop with 1G of memory and 20G harddrive.
I need my computer working so since I didn't have enough disk space for a dual boot I've had to reinstall Windows.
I'm keen to switch to Linux and since I payed for Fedora 11 dvd I'd like to try and get that working before I try another distro.

Next I install Centos 5.3
during the installation process, I choose windows xp as my default system since my work place works in Windows XP.
but real problem is after installing Centos 5.3 I'm not able to choose which OS to boot.
I've refer to [URL]
but after I go into linux rescue
what I found is that lilo is not installed.
ls -lrth /sbin/lilo
neither is there any presence of /etc/lilo.conf
how am I going to resolve this issue so that I have a chance to choose which OS I can boot into?

My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
boot
This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32
I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

I have Debian Wheezy on my Dell Vostro 1710.
There is a fsck scan happening every 35 mounts on my laptop (i.e. when I boot)
It was fine until a few weeks ago when it started to fail.
Here is the error message :
What should I do to fix that ? I use my laptop to go on the Internet and I don't remember modifying/installing anything that could make this happen.
I found the answer : [URL] ....
I just had to type the root password and run fsck manually as follows : fsck /dev/sda7.

Partition limit is 4 on my Inspiron 1525 so even with the space available I cannot create a Fedora partition because:
50MB for Dell Diagnostics
**GB main vista partition
10GB recovery partition
2.5GB MediaDirect partition
I'm trying to dual boot vista/fedora. I know I can delete the MediaDirect partition but that causes boot problems if the button is pressed while the power is off. I'm not sure which of the 3 Dell Partitions to remove.

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.
I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.
After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.
However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.
Here is my bootchar,

I have been trying to do some testing with server cloning and partitioning and hit some walls. The server is question is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and the Distro's I have tried are :-
Clonezilla-live-1.2.8-46-i686
Parted Magic 6.2 & 6.2
The problem is a little strange is that the console appears to keep reporting either unreadable sectors on sr0 for clonezilla till SQUASHFS fails to load/locate and it panic's or in the case of Parted Magic.. copying files to RAM ..cp: read error: Input/output error
Mounting pmagic-6.2.sqfs... mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Mounting //sqfs_disk/pmagic-6.2.sqfs failed.
type "exit" to reboot the computer
bash-4.1#
Now the only problem here is I can't check the log's or dmesg the thing because it freezes the KVM and as I am offsite I have no spares with me Parted Magic does boot on a number of other servers like the R900 but will not boot at all here, I have tried safemode and disabling various other flag's but I must be missing something.

Has anyone got Ubuntu 10.04 working on their Dell Inspiron 1100? Most of the time, the screen goes black a short time after boot. Sometimes it goes black right after the splash screen, sometimes I get to log in and then it goes black a little later. Same results when trying to boot into "safe graphics" mode. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine on this machine (although I had to do some special configuration in xorg.conf to get it to work way back when I installed it.) However, it does not appear to be possible to manually configure X in 10.04. I tried disabling the splash screen in grub based on suggestions I found for other Ubuntu versions, but that had no effect on the problem.
Is it possible to replace X with the most recent version that could still be manually configured? Would anyone know how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, if it's impossible to get this old machine to run new versions of Ubuntu, has anyone had success with (relatively) new versions of other distros on it?

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.
