Software :: Thunderbird Uploading Attachments
Apr 13, 2011
I have Internet access with Verizon Wireless and have a limit of 5 gigs per month but Mozilla Thunderbird 3.1.8 is wasting my data whenever I send large attachments. For example, when I send an attachment to somebody, Thunderbird will upload it okay but when it is finished uploading it, the message in the window then says "copying to the Sent folder" but it does not simply "copy" it, instead, it uploads the attachment all over again to the Sent folder. So the attachment was uploaded twice, once to the recipient and once to my sent folder.I am running Linux Mint 9 Isadora.Is there a way to stop this behavior?

at my work we have upgraded suse to 11.2, thus we also got an upgrade of thunderbird 2 to 3.
When I now save attachments to our network disks it writes them as user=rw (600), and no longer as 644. I do not want to do chmod for every attachment.When creating a file by csh or bash terminal or downloading a file by firefox it does write the file as 644, which is good.
Can someone please give me a suggestion of how I can solve this problem? Is there something I have to change in the prefs.js file?

I have people sending me pictures I can't open in Thunderbird , it wants me to "Save" them, that has a Content-Type of Octet-Stream and I want enter Gwenview to view this Content-Type. There is no "Options" in the "Tools" window.

I'm using Thunderbird 3.x on Ubuntu (Linux). When I save an attachment to my computer, the file gets saved with only the owner (me) having read/write permissions. In other words, the file gets saved as -rw
Frequently, I want my group to have permission, or to give read permission to everyone. Is there a way to do change Thunderbird's default file permissions so I don't have to do this manually every time?

I've set Mozilla Thunderbird to store incoming email attachments in a separate directory, but it still keeps attachments inline in their messages and there's not a single attachment saved in the directory I've set.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 for a couple months now and am currently using it with Firefox 3.6.3 and Thunderbird 3.0.4. I was wondering if it was possible to view thumbnails when trying to upload a picture (e.g. to eBay) or adding a picture as an attachment to an email rather than just having a list view and having to click on each picture to get a preview. I have quite a lot of pictures and it becomes a bit time consuming trying to find the right one to upload.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I have set up a Sympa list serv server and everything is working fine for the most part. One issue that I am running into is sending files over ~580 KB in size (just a normal .txt file) are not going through. I am getting the following error. Impossible to distribute your message for list 'list-name' because of an internal server error.I have verified that my "Maximum message size (max_size)" setting in Sympa is get to 5 MB so that shouldn't be the problem. If I try sending the same .txt file after taking out a few lines, and the file size is ~530 KB, then it works just fine. Nothing is really jumping out at me in the logs either.

I'm at a complete loss on this one.MY version of Firefox 3.6.10 (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) opens all email attachments with no problem. However, my sister's machine--same 3.6.10 and 10.04 LTS--does not. Instead, she gets the following message: "(PDF or JPEG) could not be opened because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences."I've checked all her preference settings against mine, and they match...but mine works and hers does not. (Also verified that "Document Viewer" and "Image Viewer" are installed properly...)

Running Postfix 2.6.1 on Slackware 13.0.I noticed that if I send an email with a large attachment(namely more than 500 KB) from another computer using this postfix server as an smtp server, it takes up to an hour to send it.It's almost like postfix is configured to send large emails later with a lower priority.The client computer and postfix server are within a GIGABIT LAN so upload 500 KB isn't an issue.

Recently installed debian lenny.Running very well.WM: ratpoison.Suddenly, today, the internet runs much slower.ONLY ON THIS MACHINE - the parallel windows machine, off of which I was successfully weaning myself, is not having this problem, so it's neither the router nor the actual internet connection.Specifically: I can't attach a document in yahoo mail.I tried it in iceweasel, same problem, so it's not the browser.I piped the output of "top" for a minute or so to a text file, which I'm attaching.

I'm about to start trying to write a script to backup / with just something like tar, or dd, split into 24mb files and email to myself.What could possibly go wrong? I'm amazed I couldn't find anything in my searches on this specifically.What I want is to go from a Gentoo rescue CD to a restored system as easily as possible.I tried rsync over gmailfs but that just froze. I can't really see that working too well anyway.

I have an interesting job at hand. A client has asked me to generate an email account for him that will block ALL file attachments unless specific email addresses are added to a white list. Cpanel doesn't seem to allow this because of Exim (from what the server techs tell me).So here I am, asking the wise. Please let me know what options there are. I don't mind installing a 3rd party email system on the server just for this client if it's possible and won't interfere with WHM/Cpanel.

I am trying to filter out attachment emails using procmail. I have tried this:
Code:
#Config:
SHELL=/bin/sh
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin
MAILDIR="/var/mail/root"
LOGFILE=/var/log/procmail.log
LOGABSTRACT=ALL
VERBOSE=ON
:0
*^Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64$ {
| echo $LASTFOLDER }
[/code]
As you can probably guess, this line "Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64" appears when emails come with attachments, but the result of this filter is:
Code:
procmail: No match on "^Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64"
procmail: Skipped "| echo $LASTFOLDER"
procmail: Assigning "echo"
procmail: Skipped "| $LASTFOLDER"
procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=/var/mail/root/msg.OFT"
procmail: Opening "/var/mail/root/msg.OFT"
procmail: Acquiring kernel-lock
procmail: Notified comsat: "root@0:/var/mail/root/msg.OFT"
From root Mon Apr 11 01:23:37 2011
Subject:
Folder: /var/mail/root/msg.OFT 26051
The result showed as if there was no match, futhermore, the bash code that I am trying to run:
echo "$LASTFOLDER" seemed not to be ran as bash? And does anyone know how I can test my procmail filter on some testing platform sandbox so I don't have to send a bunch of emails everytime I change the file and waste time and disk space testing new filters?

Not long ago I installed the Linux version of the Real Player (bad, bad me,I know) on my Debian Lenny system. Now Kmail will only open mp3 files attached to incoming mail with the Real Player.Outside of Kmail I have VLC set as my default player for mp3 files and that works fine but Kmail isn't respecting my system choices and I can't find any means, or reference to, changing the default media player in Kmail.This is so incredibly frustrating that it's almost like being stuck with a Windows system again.As a full-time Linux user I've lost my sense of martyred patience.

have a strange problem with evolution attachments: they take ages to save. I just received a 7 MB daily and it took about 3 minutes (!) until it completed the saving process.to be clear, the problem isn't downloading the email with the attachment from the mailserver. the problem exists AFTER the email has been downloaded from the server to my evolution inbox and I try to use the "save as..." option.it almost looks like evolution is trying to "download" the file from my local harddrive to my local harddrive (yes, this sentence is correct), and it's doing that at extremely low speed.

I manage a linux-based network, where some projects are currently under development. Our IT policy states that any email attachment shall be encrypted using GPG. Can I block other attachments using a firewall?
Note: Currently our mail server is not in campus. So I can only use a firewall for this security issue.

I'm am not remotely familiar with the linux operating sytem and just need a simple 'cut and paste solution' that will allow me to send .gz files as mail attachments, from the command line.Recently I moved my website to new hosting company, they are using cpanel and I have set up a couple of commands; the cpanel scheduler runs them for me as required.
1.creates an mysql dump and saves it to folder ( in root of my space )Works fine.2. delete the file created above, after 15 mins. Also works fineWhat I really want to do is email the .gz to myself before it is deleted, this is were I am stuck.This is possible ( I believe ) but it is beyond my understanding and ability to write the scipt/command that will make this happen.Please make any instructions really simple and clear as I am really new to this.on the server and this information is provided below and may be helpful to you (but I certainly to not know anything about this type of stuff)

How can mail attachments be downloaded from a POP3-supporting mail server and saved as local files? I've looked into a variety of mail clients and studied mbox, maildir and MIX but no solutions are jumping out and saying "It's me you're looking for!" (story of my life ) The requirement is for an organisation with no document management system; as a first step I want to get all their files in one place, including files that may exist only as email attachments.
