Software :: Can Salvage Data After Rm
Dec 2, 2009
I deleted a bunch of files with the rm command that I really should not have gotten rid of. Is there a way to get it back or salvage it via another command or even third party software?

I use ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop pc and i have on my laptop installed Windows XP with Office 2007. The office suite has been activated for the third and last time, because windows crashed on me twice before, prompting my move to linux. while this third activation of office is still working i was wondering if there was some way to salvage this activation, so i don't lose it should it fail, which it most likely will at some point in the future. i was thinking if there was a software that could copy an already installed operating system and turn it into a virtual machine. That software would of course have to run in an windows environment.
I know i can use openoffice, and i do. Its great to get things done quickly, but my college course is specific to office 2007, and i have to memorise the interface to be able to write up procedures from memory.I'm not sure but xp is probably very hardware specific so as long as i run that virtual machine on my laptop with a linux distro i should be fine.

Sometimes you get more than you ask for and in this case, I did: I had no idea (had the computer for a few years now) that I was running a dual core 64 bit machine. The silly thing is that I have 32bit Fedora 11 on it, 32 bit versions of all my installed software...etc., etc. Am I able at this point to salvage anything or is it best to just back up the home directory and then do a reinstall?

I had just put the last touch on a snort, mysql, apache, barnyard, base isntall to CentOs 5.3. I noticed that ifconfig displayed an odd virtual nic, and I wanted as little running on this machine as possible. I don't remember specifying that I wanted XEN installed. And on the old lowend machine that is powering this server, Virtualization was the last thing I wanted running on it. I did a google, discovered that the way to remove XEN completely (yum uninstall xen' only removed 'xen' but still, oddly, xen was running after a reboot. Talk about perplexing.

Where apart from ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail does kmail keep account data, such as login data/names of pop/smtp servers? I wanted to install an entirely clean version of kmail, so I uninstalled/re-installed kmail via YAST. I manually deleted ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmail. After installing kmail I found that the account data of my Yahoo account were still listed in the kmail configuration panel. Shall I delete the Yahoo account within kmail prior to uninstalling the kmail package?

I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop.Below is code snippet of my C++ AppOpen the connection to serial port
Code:
serialfd = open( serialPortName.c_str(), O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY | O_NDELAY);

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

Right now I have a 320GB system drive and 3TB data drive. I want to add two more 3TB drives and do a software RAID5 3x3TB. Is that possible without losing the data that is already on the data drive?Just want to make sure before I bought the 2 two drives. Not looking for instructions on how to do it,but if you want to include some that would be great too Just making sure it will work.

We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.
Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.
My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.

I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.
How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.

The printers are ancient Newbury data dot matrix wide carriage with 7 data bits receive 8 data bits transmit Xon/Xoff flow control. Now I remember setting the transmit and receive data bits as above but after 7 years can't remember where.

Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.
It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.
I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).
I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.

Recently my 1TB western digital my book pro world edition II networking hdd died, i called support and they put me though a bunch of **** and 3rd party companys to resorect the data witch i would still have to pay for despite the drive been in warrenty, the drive is made up on two hdd inside each 500GB, I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some sort of tutorials on this sort of thing so i can do it myself, I have tried just simply taking the drives out and plugging them directly into my sata ports but no dice, nothing comes up at all in linux, What programs are there out there to do this sort of thing?

When I try to burn a data DVD with k3b it errors out telling me...
Unable to find the following files: /home/ion/.kde4/share/apps/RecentDocuments/Mon oncle d'Am+rique (Resnais, 1980).srt.desktop
...but when I invoke (as root)...
# ls -al home/ion/.kde4/share/apps/RecentDocuments
...it retruns...
ls: cannot access home/ion/.kde4/share/apps/RecentDocuments: No such file or directory
So is k3b lying or ls?
Before you ask, fsck gave no errors. But Find files/Folders from the Application Launcher menu finds and lists it in the RecentDocuments directory as above, then tells me it is "Inaccessible". Delete does not work from GUI or CLI.

Does there exist a program for Linux that can display raw binary data?
Each byte in my binary files represent a pixel, so it would be very useful if something like this exists where I could say
program_name --input=dat001.bin --width=200 --height=100
and it would display the pixels.

On my Mac, OS X Snow Leopard 10.6, I copied my itunes music files onto my external hard drive, which is HFS+ formatted (as FAT32 just wouldn't cut it for the other files that are on this drive, mainly 1080p video spanning several gigs on a single file)..
Here's the problem, Linux doesn't have ANY permissions it seems to access it.. I did nothing special on the Mac side, just drag and dropped all the files over.
As a normal user I can't open the folder. As root, I can go into the folder, but still can't access the files themselves!
I can't write to it either to change permissions because HFS+ is read only.
I need these files IMMEDIATELY, and I need to know how to do this now.

As root: [URL]

I recently had CentOS installed, but felt that I didn't need the whole server thing, so I picked ubuntu as my OS as I have used it in the past and quite liked it. I formated my first hard drive and installed Ubuntu 10.10. My second drive is a ext3 data drive only. After installing Ubuntu, I can see the drive on the desktop, telling me that it is mounted...i think? But when I goto the drive all the folders are protected. I tried to chown with root to see the stuff but to no avail. I can't seem to change permissions on the drive either or the files.

I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 on my EEE-PC for most of my thesis research, but I left it running a python script overnight and now I can't get it to login. I was running low on disk-space, and I think the problem is that the script generated a lot of text files and used up all of the available hard drive space.
Now, whenever I try to boot the machine, it reaches the user-select/login screen, but logging in just causes it to go black for a second before returning to the login screen. I have Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB, and Ubuntu Rescue Remix on another, and both allow me to boot up my machine, but I can't see my hard-drive - neither in /mnt/ nor in /media/ - in order to copy my thesis files or to delete some excess text files to free up some hard-drive space.
