Slackware :: Firefox 3.6.12 Just Installed - Dumps On Start
Nov 11, 2010
following the instructions on firefox's web site i installed firefox 3.6.12 in /home/jed/firefox. when i start it from KDE, it shows a startup feedback icon for a few seconds and a firefox button on the task bar for a few seconds, hen it dumps. when i try to start it from a terminal window, nothing happens, it just hangs. i let it sit like that for 20min before hitting ^C. i'm running slack 13.0. working version of firefox is 3.0.17, which fortunately i can point my KDE menu back to and get it to work.

I really like KDE 4.4.3, which comes with Slackware 13.1. It is very responsive even on my Pentium III IBM laptop, and that, even with Nepomuk, Akonadi, and Strigi running! However, I'm building Linux from Scratch 6.7 on that laptop right now and I decided that I wanted a much lighter-weight X environment for building LFS because I really only need Firefox and Konsole. The other stuff that's running in KDE that make it nice to use day to day simply uses resources that aren't needed when I'm mostly just compiling software.
So I started looking for light WMs. I played a lot with TWM, which I like. But I wanted to be able to Alt-Tab between Firefox and Console. I think I can do that if I customize the .twmrc, but I haven't got that far with it yet. So I built and installed Openbox from Slackbuilds.org, along with the Tint2 panel/taskbar. It works perfectly for what how I want to use it!

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

I was trying to plug projector on my laptop with slackware 13.1 installed. The problem is that the projector stops showing whenever I start X. I can see everything starting from LILO loader, but whenever I type "startx" - bam, no signal or just a black screen on the wall. I try to switch to console mode with ctrl+alt+f1 - the view appears, switching back to X with ctrl+alt+f7 - view disappears. I am using awesome WM. I tried XFCE, but the result was the same. I also tried to change resolution to
Code:
xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768 / 800x600
, but again, no difference. My laptop is ASUS F3Jc. Fn keys doesn't help as well.

I am trying to make a clean install of linux on three new 500G HDs. Because the last failure caused loss of my wife's pictures, I'm in the dog house. I know, I know. Back-up, back-up, back-up.I'm trying to set up a Raid 5 as partial insurance against disk failure (along with a frequent back up schedule). A friend suggested that I put 4-5 partitions in the raid array to aid in recovery if a disk fails (/boot, /, /var, /home, and swap). I know that swap doesn't get 'raided'. I've looked at 50+ tutorials on how to set up raid5 from a clean install and after installing the whole system. Nothing has helped or even addressed this issue so far.
Problem is that I have now tried installing 4 different flavors of linux (Ubuntu, Mint, and a couple of distros of Fedora) with the custom disk partitioning as mentioned above. I've tried installing grub on the MBR and the first partition (/boot). I've ensured that it pointed to the correct partition to find the kernel (/). I've tried everything that I can think of, and at every reboot, I get dumped to the grub CLI after bios post, regardless of distro. I cannot get the system to load the kernel.

I'm running Scientific Linux 5.5 (equivalent to CentOS 5.5), and over the past two weeks, I have had a problem with my root partition filling up, preventing anyone from logging into the server. After searching for large files, and finding none, I was mystified when du told me that the root partition had only 660 MB of disk space used, whilst df showed it full. The problem was this: the /var/crash directory had been filled up by an 8GB crash file. Now, I'm a 'proper' sysadmin and make sure that /var has its own mount point, so the crash should not have touched the root partition at all. Except it did - instead of writing to /var/crash on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol04 which is mounted as /var, it wrote the file to /dev/md0 directly, so when all the file systems were mounted, those files were hidden under the mounted /var.

I have a dumb question but the google can't seem to answer it. When (if?) my host locks up (RHEL 5.4) I generally don't get anything in /var/crash . kdump is configured correctly and works (if tested using ` echo "c" > /proc/sysrq-trigger` as per Red Hat's KBase article) but in the real world, when the system locks up nothing ever ends up there.
So, on to the dump ( ) question - I have to crash it using Ctrl + SysRq in order to get anything out of this, right. If the box is comatose and doesn't respond at all to the point of being power cycled, it's all gone isn't it? Volatile memory being what it is and all; or is there some sort of magic / voodoo in place that makes it survive the reboot. And no, my Dell PowerEdge 1950 doesn't have battery backed RAM, so i'm quite sure that unless i can kill it through sysrq ...

Have NO video camera. Trying to receive SKYPE video using Fedora 11 & SKYPE Beta Version 2.1.0.81 [latest version].When I receive a video call the image appears and then freezes and dumps the call after about six seconds.I have tried the 'env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l2convert.so /usr/bin/skype' launch, but it makes no difference in the bug.I have NOT heard that a camera is required to receive video. Is there a fix for this?nal information: Here is the error message I get when the call dumps and crashes SKYPE.

I then partioned the 300gb thru Windows using Paragon Hard Disk Manager. After installing Ubunta, it dumps me at the command prompt. Graphics problem?

My Apache web server (respectively a child process) is crashing several times a day. I wanted to find the exact reason and activated the core dumps but even though the crashing-issues continue, the core dumps were never created. I have found several howto's which basically point to the same steps:
- set "ulimit -c unlimited"
- add "CoreDumpDirectory" directive into apache2.conf (Debian's httpd.conf)
Another info I've found is that /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable shouldn't be 0 - so on one howto it said to echo 2 into it, on another one to echo 1 to /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable - didn't work with neither of them.

Has anyone noticed ABRT not being able to connect to Bugzilla or the remote Core Dump analysis server? Since my upgrade during the beta phase of F15 I have been unable to file bug reports from ABRT's traces, nor has it offered me the option to file bugs to bugzilla. What it does, however, is offer me to analyse the Core Dump and backtrace of the crash using either the remote server or locally with GDB. Needless to say I'm clueless in GDB, and it requires a LOT of debug symbols found in the corresponding debug packages. But trying to use the remote analysis server always results in a message of the server being busy and to try again later. IIRC the last time I was able to file a bug through ABRT was in 13, has anyone been able to do so in 15?

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on the same harddrive that I already have Windows XP on, but on a different partition, and now it won't start. I've installed it with a USB-stick after I split the harddrive. When I turn on the computer, it goes directly to XP, so that tells me it should be a problem with the bootloader?

I installed updates a few days ago and now my computer just hangs. After the blue and white bar at the bottom of the screen disappears when loading F11, I get a blank screen with the following: ADDRCONF (NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready. I think this happened after I had some kernel updates installed. The only way I can get Fedora to run is by booting up with a previous version. How do I fix this? I seem to be having alot of issues with updates messing up some part of my system lately.

I have a media centre running mythbuntu 10.10, with an Athlon X2 2400 in it. I've just replaced my aging nVidia GeForce 6200 with an nVidia gt430. After restarting the box with the new card in it, and an old VGA monitor plugged in X won't start properly. It fails with "Screens found but no valid configuration" or similar. I removed the old xorg.conf and tried restarting, and it will actually go into X, but when I try to run nvidia-settings, it tells me I'm not using the nVidia driver.
I then tried deactivating the nvidia driver and reactivating it, then using sudo nvidia-xconfig, but when rebooting I get the same error as above. dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg seems to no longer do anything i.e. if I delete xorg.conf and run this, no new xorg.conf is generated. I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to get the new video card working properly. I'm going to put the box back together and plug it back into the flat screen tv and see if it all works. no xorg.conf allows me into X, but without being able to configure with nvidia-settings. running nvidia-xconfig gives me an xorg.conf, but won't allow X to start...

The pc has 3 disks sda and sdb not partitioned (for future raid use, the first 3 disks are hot pluggable) and sdc (on sata port 4) with
sdc1 for /boot (shared)
sdc2 set to swap
sdc3 extended
sdc5 for another linux distribution
[Code]....
I have installed without any problem but at time to configure the bootloader the only choiches are sda or sdc1.
I have also lilo installed on the mbr so i have added in its configuration the image and the initrd of centos with root configured as /dev/sdc6.
In every case the system stat, try to find raid devices, try to resume from sdc4 (this will be another problem in the future, I need to disable this), and later hal with a kernel panic unable to find root.
I think the kernel command line parameters are not correct but seriously i am not able to find them.

The setup: 2 identical boxes running Fedora Core 15 2.6.38.8 kernel, 64bit that Im trying to setup in a cluster using luci.
So far: Managed to create the cluster.conf file, defined the nodes with hosts and such.
The problem: When I try to have the 2 nodes (nod1 and nod2) join the cluster via luci's web interface, I get
"Starting cman: Job failed. See system logs and 'systemctl status' for details."
When I check code...
Now. I know that cman service is installed. I even tried removing and reinstalling the whole thing, dependencies and all, but it just won't start and I've run out of ideas.

I'm relatively new to Linux and am currently working with my first installation from scratch . Fedora 14 was the latest available at the time I started my project.
Over the last couple of days I've been running across a couple of different issues. The last change I made before seeing these issue was to install samba. I can't say for sure that this is the cause of these issues.
Just to be clear, I did have Firefox working until last week.
Problem: Starting Firefox does not open a browser window.
----------
I'm try to start Firefox by clicking on the icon in the upper panel. This action displays a small black circle showing progress and a tab with 'Starting Firefox' on the lower panel. After a few seconds they disappear and nothing happens; no browser and no error messages either.
I looked in a few different places, which I thought were appropriate /var/log/messages, dmesg but I found these provide information about hardware.
Also tried invoking Firefox from the command line but it seems that this mode is not recommended in Fedora and throws out errors in both user and root mode. Doc with errors attached.
Listing 1 shows the error when calling firefox as user.
Listing 2 shows the error when calling firefox as root.
Listing 3 shows all the processes running in the system. (including in case it's useful).
I have tried reinstalling firefox, and removing and installing firefox using yum (yum lists reinstall as a separate option) but neither method resolves the issue.
