Slackware :: Change Global Wide Recognition Of NEW Isntalled Glib2.4.8?

Nov 24, 2010

I installed glib 2.4.8 the usualy way. ./configure make make install. This was required by a program bitlbee messenger. But the bitlbee install script still picks up the old glib versio when I do,

root@box:/#pkg-config glib-2.0 --modversion
output=2.2.3
and prompts me to upgrade.

My Question. How can I change global wide recognition of my NEW isntalled glib2.4.8 and stop scripts etc picking up the old libraries+version. Slackware version 9

Ubuntu :: Change Very Wide Window Borders?

Aug 16, 2009

There has to be an easy way to change window border width (pixels). Not sure how mine got so wide but I have looked in Appearance, Compiz, Emerald Themes, etc and I can't figure it out! I am using Ubuntu Jaunty and have searched high and low. I think it's gnome but I'm confused about windowing environments. Found some ideas (tried them all - all seemed reasonable (such as holding ALT while mousing, etc). So far no luck.

Slackware :: 1920x1200 With Vesafb - Higher/wide Resolutions

Jan 8, 2010

So I have been running uvesafb for a while now with no complaints, but klibc hasn't been updated for about a year. I contacted to the author and he said that he will have an update in the coming weeks. However today I was googeling around and to make a long story short, I have successfully been able to get a 1920x1200 console resolution with just the plain old vesafb. This is good news but I am also confused because I've been told many times that is not possible for vesafb to do higher/wide resolutions.

Slackware :: Achieve System-wide Proxy Settings

Jun 23, 2011

I want to set the HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY and http_proxy and FTP_PROXY environment variables "somewhere", so all programs that recognise these can find them. I need root to find them for slackpkg and sbopkg, I need users to find them for Dropbox, I need them for cronjobs and scripts and wget.So I want to set these environment variables up somewhere, preferably something in /etc and have them set and accessible for everyone and everything. I am not using KDE or XFCE or any desktop. I need a command line solution.

Where is the best place to put this? I see that some other distros have a /etc/environment and these variables go in there. In Slackware, should I add them as a new file in /etc/profile.d and have them added every time /etc/profile is accessed? Is there a Slackware approved method that I don't know about?

Slackware :: System Wide Application/filetype Defaults?

Sep 8, 2010

I have been searching around into /etc/xdg/ and ~/.config and also /skel/.config (for newly created users!) so I can ensure specific applications open filetypes by default.

I would prefer to be able to use a system wide configuration so that i may be able to run a script with each new slackware release that would change application/filetype defaults for all users including existing to our liking (unless they have already preset their own app/defaults in ~/.config).

Fedora :: Can't Change Global Volume Using Applet - Function Keys / Resolve It?

Jun 14, 2009

Sound is my #1 issue on F11.
Most of the time I can't change the system wide volume setting by pressing the function keys on my laptop (the volume indicator doesn't even show up). When that happens (and I havent't been able to find out why and under what conditions that happens) the volume applet on my panel also becomes useless. Useless meaning that I can slide the slider up and down with no effect on the audible volume. I can still change the volume within the individul applications (rhythmbox, totem, ...) with success.
Adjusting the volume via gst-mixer or pavucontrol does also works as expected. It's really just the volume keys and the panel applet that refuse to cooperate.

About this system (pretty standard intel_hda, no problems with F10)code...

Ubuntu :: Choose Windows Vista (Which Is Pointing To Where Xp Is Isntalled)

Jul 8, 2010

I have 3 operating systems installed to my computer.

Windows 7 64 Bit
Windows XP 32Bit
Ubuntu 9.04

The problem I am facing is this: I recently installed XP on a drive that up until now had a Vista install on it. My Grub loader used to be the main boot loader for my computer. But when I choose Windows Vista (Which is pointing to where xp is isntalled) I get an error message. When I choose seven I get an error message.

Infact the onlly one that works from the grub menu is ubuntu itself. So to get to Windows XP or Seven I must choose the hardrive in the bios. So how do I get the grub loader to point to the correct place to make it load seven and xp?

Fedora Installation :: How To Boot Fedora 10 With Vista Isntalled

May 13, 2009

I am by no means a computer newb but I'm having alot of trouble finding an article and or guide on the net that explains in clear detail how to isntall Fedora 10 onto a computer with Windows Vista installed. Let me explain, I have two identical hard drives on my system. One for Vista and the other, for Fedora 10. I've installed Fedora 10 onto the other hard drive, and so as to not damage my vista patition in any way i asked that the Fedora installation boot from the other hard drive, which is where the boot laoder for the fedora 10 was installed.

All went well and the installation went be smooth as silk. However after rebooting all my system does is boot into Vista, no boot loader menu screen, what gives?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Zattoo Suddenly Segfaults - /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.24.1/gobject/gtype.c:2706: You Forgot To Call G_type_init()

Jun 13, 2010

Zattoo (TV watching application, see [URL]) used to work fine until... a couple days ago, presumably. Now the window vanishes again before anything appears other than the menu bar. From KPackagekit's history I can tell there were updates to ligbail18, libtk2.0-common. libgtk2.0-0, libgtk2.0-bin and others on Tuesday 08 June 2010 but I don't know if that was it.

Ubuntu :: Global Hotkeys On Audacious Don't Respond Unless Open Preferences, Open Settings For Global Hotkeys, Then Close Down The Settings?

Feb 19, 2010

I have two major issues, and one minor one, after I started using Ubuntu, I tried searching the forum for them, but couldn't find anything relevant to my problems.First issue: Screenshots and the cursor. This is probably a very easily fixed issue, but none-the-less, I can not figure it out.How do I NOT include the cursor in my screenshots on Ubuntu 9.10?What I do is, I press the Prt Scrn button, and my cursor is always there in the image, and I don't want that.Second is pidgin.I love it, but every time I boot it up, my friendly name is reverted back to firefoxfag.I think it has something to do with me using gmail for msn, but I'm not sure...Also, as a last very small issue, the global hotkeys on audacious don't respond unless i open preferences, open settings for global hotkeys, then close down the settings..

After a little bit of googling and attempting what some people recommend I am still having issues. I've tried the lsusb command but it doesn't seem to be recognized. I've searched the media and dev directories but found nothing showing any system recognition of USB devices. The ports do work as I've hopped the mouse and keyboard around to all of them and they work just fine.

Hardware :: HP Scanner Text Recognition Quality?

Mar 24, 2010

Just installed Ubuntu K-K 9.10 4 months ago, still a newbie. Got my HP PSC 1410 all-in-one hooked up and the HP Device Manager installed OK and xsane. Printer works good and scanner handles pics great but I don't have any luck scanning a menu to doc format. The menu does have fancy scroll-work around the edges and main headings are a script font and Course names are underlined. All other items are clear font. I figured this all added to the problem of very unreadable scan results till I tried a page with all clear block font and it's still totally unreadable. I mean totally! I've searched till I'm out of ideas. There has to be a way to tweak the recognition of text.
