Slackware :: KDE Themes - No Window Decoration Settings

May 7, 2011

I installed slack 13.37 (haven't used KDE since 2003) and I can't find where to change the look of the window manager itself. I can see the color themes and the "style" settings but no window decoration settings. Am I missing something? See attached png for System Style settings...

Ubuntu :: Lost Window Decoration And Other Settings

Sep 1, 2011

I'm using ubuntu classic on 11.04 (that's not the foolish part). I was tidying up my main menu with the Edit Menu application, and deleted all of the hidden items in the Applications submenu 'Other', including things like Compiz, Metacity, Open Folder, Window Manager.I had believed that this would have no effect on the operation of anything; only upon what was listed in the menu, but the effects seem to have been quite severe and wide-ranging.Now, at reboot, there is no background image, cursor, or windows decorator (I have to get a terminal window open and run compiz --replace), and I cannot open locations from the places Menu (I get an error telling me that no application is registered as handling this file). There are probably other consequences I have yet to discover.

The desktop.configuration files for the 'Other' menu items are still present in Usr/Share/Applications directory. Is there a way that I can restore things to the way they worked before I deleted these Menu items? It would be an enormous help in my predicament.

Ubuntu :: Have A Window Decoration Like A Clock

May 12, 2011

I have my toolbars (top and bottom) set to autohide to save screen real estate, but I need to have a clock so I always know what time it is (my clock widget keeps disappearing). There's actually tons of real estate going to waste on the top window bar. I know the program I'm looking at, and I know where I am. I think it would be cool if we could just get rid of the top bar thing, or at least make it 1/3 the size.

Otherwise, I'd like to have a clock on it, at least, since it's completely blank all the way across to the right side of the screen.

CentOS 5 :: Gnome Window Decorators And Themes Don't Always Appear In The?

Jan 6, 2010

I've tried to download and install themes using the theme manager but they don't always appear in the list even after a response of a successful install. Wondering what themes are allowed and how to tell. I think I am using gnome-window-decorator, as that is running. I am using compiz with nvidia successfully. Do certain themes require a different window decorator like metacity?

Is is safe to switch between gnome-window-decorator and metacity and how do I do that? I have metacity installed: metacity-2.16.0.12.el5_4.1_x86_64 I tried this one: MCity-ClearlooksWithACherryOnTop.tar.gzbut it doesn't show up in the theme panel. From what I've read gnome-window-decorator is the old name for gtk-window-decorator. Can any gtk themes be used with the version of gnome in centos 5.4?

Ubuntu :: Missing Window Menu Icon With Some Themes?

Feb 5, 2010

When you go to System/Preferences/Appearance/ and the Appearance Preferences window displays the graphical representations of the themes, on most of them the gnome image-missing.png is displayed where the window menu icon (far-left on the titlebar) should be displayed. I never had this happen with Intrepid, but I do have this situation now on Jaunty. It's not just with new or added themes, it's the system's default installed themes as well. If you search around the net you'll see that this is a pretty common problem. Is a .png getting deleted, or is it something else in the process that is 'broken'?

Many of my apps display their proper menu window icons (like nautilus, ff3, etc.) - but others do not. I assume the ones that don't are trying to use a system or default icon rather than their own and that it is missing? Here are two screenshots I grabbed off of google to show you the difference.Missing...Not missing.

Fedora :: GNOME Window Settings - Missing In FC12?

Nov 18, 2009

noticed that Fedora 12 made some odd design decisions for default GNOME settings, and I couldn't locate the System->Preferences->Windows menu item to change them back. The design options I'm talking about:

* No icons in menus (System menu for instance has no icons, though there are icons under the Preferences and Administration sub-menus... the root System menu though has none)

* Icons on toolbars are configured so the label text appears to the right of the buttons, so this makes File Explorer in Nautilus look funny to me. I like the text appearing beneath the icons like it has always been up until now.

why the Windows configuration has been removed from Fedora 12? The control-center package provides the bins for all the preferences items except for gnome-window-settings; so is it upstream that did this? Anyway, I had to dig around in the gconf-editor to find where the window settings are kept so I could change them "manually", since the Windows tool is gone now. For anyone else who wants to know, it's under /desktop/gnome/interface in the gconf-editor (namely, keys toolbar_style, buttons_have_icons, and menus_have_icons are the ones I changed).

Ubuntu :: New Firefox Window Forgets Toolbar Settings

Feb 10, 2010

I use Kubuntu 9.10. All packages are up-to-date. The problem: When opening a new window in firefox, the new window forgets the toolbar settings. So when I start firefox and the first window shows up, it shows my toolbar settings correctly, which is pretty minimalistic actually (no buttons, bookmark menu, google searchbar, etc.). But when I then open a new window from the original one, the new window has forgotten my toolbar settings and shows all the buttons, the searchbar, etc..

This happens irrespective from if I hit Ctrl+N, or print firefox after hitting Alt+F2 (which just opens a second window since the firefox process is already running). What can I do? I read in some other post that you should delete some settings file that might have gone corrupt, but I have done this and it did not help.

Ubuntu :: Disable Or Customize Some Of Preview Settings On Alt-tab Window

Aug 17, 2011

how to disable or customize some of the preview settings on the alt-tab window..MY Question is if its possible to disable the "Grouping" part..such as having multiple nautilus windows.primarily thunderbird is the largest annoyance.. if im writing an email on my laptop and accedentally (touchpad 'palming') off the 'compose message' window; by default and second nature, my brain tells my fingers to alt-tab back into it.

alt tab doesnt allow tabbing into the sub-groups..you CAN although use the arrow keys combined with alt-tab, and eventually find your way down into the hierarchy, and to the right email. this is much too much work compared to a simple alt-tab once, like most other situations.i did notice an option to disable touchpad while youre typing in the settings. is there a gconf entry to adjust the delay? or how many keys need to be typed before its disabled?

problem there, is that if i hit return, or esc, or delete, or pretty much anything that should just be a QUICK one button press, and back to the touch pad, results in waiting 2-3 SECONDS.

Ubuntu :: GDM2setup: Can't Change Decoration

Dec 1, 2010

Currently playing with Ubuntu 10.10 and installing the usual programs but one thing is bothering me. Previous versions of Ubuntu (last I tried was 9.04) have always had nice and configurable loginscreens. This time however, I am not having so much success. After following the advice of downloading GDM2setup, I was able to change the background image. But I wanted to change the login to something darker. The white login screen looks so ... white. Even using Gdm2setup - Decoration doesn't make any difference in what I get on startup. Can anybody give me a hand?

What I currently get is a white/grey square a nice computer icon and Username in black. I've seen a few tutorials on the net but further than change the background and icons, I can't see anyone change this to a darker background. Am I asking/expecting too much?

Among different tut, I tried this one [URL] but can't seem to change the color of the login dialog. What's up with that?

Ubuntu :: 'Decoration Windows' Rule Does Not Properly Update With Emerald?

Mar 25, 2011

I am using the Emerald window decorator and want to hide the titlebar of windows that are maximized. In CompizConfig is an option for choosing which windows should be decorated, and since I don't want to decorate maximized windows, I added !state=maxvert. This works well with the default GTK window decorator, but when using Emerald it fails: first it seems working, but after unmaximizing a window suddenly all windows lack decoration. It even stays that way when I readd 'any' to the line, I have to switch to the default decorator or restart gnome. Now is there any way to make this work with Emerald? I would really like to keep my current theme while hiding full-screen title bars.

Edit:

Not exactly related: I am also using Global Menu which is nice, but the window management menu (maximize, minimize, resize etc.) only works if the window list is activated too. Is there a solution or do I have to create a bug report at that project? :v

Slackware :: Migrating To KDE 4.5.5 - Customized Settings

Mar 1, 2011

I am migrating to KDE4. When Current goes official I plan to install and give KDE4 a serious run. Because I am running 12.2 I will forego the upgrade path and install fresh in separate partitions. I haven't performed a fresh install since first installing Slackware 10.1. Likely I'll go 64-bit as my system is a dual core AMD with 4GB of RAM. Is there a list somewhere of 32-bit apps that have no 64-bit versions? Through the years I have many system tweaks and customized settings, but I'll be able to migrate and resurrect those readily. Mostly I am concerned with the desktop migration. Any punch list of warnings and "gotchas" are welcomed. Any links focusing on migrating at such a "late" stage in the KDE4 cycle.

I don't want to build the desktop completely from scratch. A fresh install reduces cruft and clutter that might have accumulated through the years, but also means more work configuring the desktop and apps. Fortunately, I long ago housed my user and data file directories on separate partitions and don't have to worry about that. Therefore during the transition I will be dual booting but using the same user accounts. All user accounts currently have $HOME/.kde profile directories that I do not want clobbered by KDE4. Should I rename that directory now and change a handful of KDE environment variables in 12.2 before working with KDE4, such as $KDEHOME and $KDE_CONFIG_DIR? New user account names would be one option, but my primary user account has too many non-KDE settings to migrate.

In that spirit, would somebody post the default Slackware KDE related environment variables so I can compare to those in KDE3? I am browsing the forum and web for various elements I should know or be forewarned, but many of the threads are old and I suspect no longer apply to KDE 4.5.5. I would like to migrate as many KDE 3.5.10 settings as possible, such as KMail, Akregator, Kate, Konsole, KMix, K3B, Kaffeine, Amarok, Digikam, etc. I realize there might be a point of diminishing returns and reconfiguring from scratch might be less problematic. Will both KDE4 and KDE3 be able to use the same KMail files? Or during the transition should I restrict my mail checks to KDE3?

If possible I would like to disable Nepomuk and Strigi before starting my first session in KDE4. I don't want to disable them after starting the first session as then profile files are automatically created. Hopefully nothing more than editing some default configuration files (/usr/share/autostart? Don't install those packages?). I have no need for or interest in Nepomuk (social-semantic desktop). I don't think I have any use for Strigi, which if I understand correctly, focuses on indexing meta data rather than just finding files. As far as I can tell because of PIM apps, disabling Akonadi is futile, so I won't try.
