Servers :: Add A User To FTP On Ubuntu?
Jul 8, 2010
I have googled around a bit but i keep getting different results. I want to add a new user to my FTP server. Im not entirely sure what ftp server im using. When i set up my server i used this site: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/ph...rver-for-free/ . It seems when i set up the server originally my admin username seems to be added to the ftp server as well. Now i want to have a new user on my server. That user can ssh into the server but when they use filezilla to ftp they can only download in it and not upload. So im assuming that they need permissions somewhere which im assuming is somehow adding them to the ftp server. I am brand new to Ubuntu and Ubuntu server.

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

I'm trying to jail a sftp user. All I want is for my daughter-in-law to be able to download pictures of my grandson on his step-uncle's motorcycle. But I don't want her browsing around. She's not a techie, but she's smart enough to catch on how WinSCP is looking at my files. I've set up the jail using jk_init, adding ssh, sftp, bash, netutils, basicshell, jk_lsh.
The physical root of the jail is owned by root, as are all the binaries loaded by the jk_init. The user's home directory is owned recursively by the user and is writable only by the owner. The passwd and group files are in the jailed /etc and populated by the user's lines. Shell is bash, and bash is there too. The error message must be coming from some other problem that's not notifying, but what?

I'm planning to take a custom-built machine presently running Windows Home Server and convert it to a Ubuntu server to support the same backup functionality, but also allow me to support other server functions as well (WHS is great for backups and as a file server, but that's about it). The machine has two 1TB 7200 RPM drives. As the primary use for the machine is backups of files stored on the server as well as on the local PCs, I'd like to configure the box to support redundancy across both drives - So if one fails, I still have my data. What would be the recommended configuration of the drives to support this? I plan on using Bacula for the backups (clients and server).
I'll assume the disk format won't be NTFS.If one of the drives fail and its the boot drive, how easy is it to recover the data from the other drive? Just want to make sure there isn't some form of security that would prevent me from reading the data.
I'm new to Linux with only a bit of Unix experience, but I figure I have to start somewhere (and I have a bit of technical expertise, just with the Windows platform) This will also let me start playing with the LAMP stack.

Apache by defaults points to /var/www/eachdomain. I need to be able to give users ftp access to /var/www/specific domains.
It seems that if I change the owner of /var/www/specificdomains/ to the user in question, then www:data no longer owns the directory and Apache starts to have issues..
What's the best way to set this such that I can allow users to FTP into specific directories, and still have www:data own them? I'm currently using vsftp, but that can easily change.

I'm attempting to give a few buddies encrypted storage space through sftp using truecrypt.I have it worked out to the point where the truecrypt volume is automatically mounted when the user logs on, and dismounted when they log off.I would like to restrict each person to their individual home folders. This way, I can control exactly how much space each user is able to use (through the size of the truecrypt volume), while maintaining security through the network due to using SFTP.
I've been looking around, and the only thing I can see is restricting a large group of users to a single directory, this won't work, I need each person to be locked down to their personal home directory. My end goal is to have these volumes "mountable" in Windows through the use of Windows network drives (on a wide network, not through samba on local), or by using expandrive or a similar program. how I can lock these users to their respective home folders?

When we run php scripts that move/rename/etc files, the script does not have access to write to files in our web root. Changing permissions to 777 fixes the problem, but obviously this is not an option..I've been reading up about suexec, phpsuexec, and suphp, but we can't seem to figure any of this out.In phpinfo(),the Server API reads: Server API Apache 2.0 Handlerbut on another server (where everything works, it reads : Server API CGI/FastCGIIs there ANY way to achieve this?

I'm configuring Apache for the first time on this box (8.04 LTS) and Apache2 for the first time ever. "Out of the box" it runs fine and I get the "It Works" page okay. But I'd like to use the virtual site feature to direct Apache to a folder in my user space, and I keep getting errors.
When I point a browser at localhost, the 404 message is "The requested URL / was not found on this server." and the /var/log/apache2/error.log ends with "File does not exist: /htdocs.
Here's my config file from the apache2/sites-available folder:
Code:
I diff'ed this file with the default and the only differences are in the DocumentRoot line and the <Directory ...> line.
My public_html folder has permissions 755 and the index.html file is 644.

forums so I'm not sure this is the right place for this topic. So, my question/topic thing is:I have a PHP script that runs on an apache2 web server (www-data).From this script, i want to launch a process that stays alive all the time,ut the parent script keeps on going. So I think I will need to run a command like 'at' to put the process on a queue, and the script can continue and finish, without waiting for the process to stop. But it seems like I will need to run the 'at' command as a different user, because www-data stops the 'atd' process. I'm not sure about that. Does anybody know how this could happen?

I'm a bit of a unix noobie trying to manage a small ubuntu server. I want to run a bash script automatically after an ssh user logs in. For example, after they log in and the default welcome message is displayed, I want to run a script that displays some server statistics since the last session. I made an alias to the script, and I could run it manually after I log in, but it's a bit of a hassle. Is there any way I could do this?

create an Apache web server with multiple user accounts, for work. Each user needs to be able to upload his/her files via SSH Each user needs his/her own web directory, (preferably in their home directory for ease with permissions) There web directories need to be password protected Only one user account (mine) should be allowed remote SSH control. It needs to be easy to add new users to the system.

network in my lab is running NIS and NFS. one of our workstations (say, workstation A) died, so we replaced it with a new computer. A user emailed me saying that he can't login to the new workstation A. I instructed him to do:
mv ~/.ssh/known_hosts ~/.ssh/known_hosts_old
He did it, and then got back to me with the following message:

Starting from my login to Workstation B, this is what I get:

The short version: I have to manage some virtual machines using php shell_exec function, so far I cant do this because apache is run by the user www-data and virtualbox by the user vboxuserFrom what I've read so far, I've thought of 3 possible solutions: 1.- Create a script on my vboxuser that I can call from php to manage the Virtual Machines.2.- Change the apache user from www-data to vboxuser so I can manage the Virtual Machines through php
3.- Reinstall VirtualBox, this time using www-data as my user. I'm not sure if any of these will work and I'm not too sure of which would be the best solutionNow the longer more detailed version:
I have a remote server running Ubuntu 10.04.2, in that server I have set up VirtualBox so I can run several instances of WinXP to perform different tasks. Everything is setup and I can manage the virtual machines through SSH. If I want to run them as a different user than the one that created them (a user that so far only has been used to create the Virtual Machines) I have to do sudo -u vboxuser. Now, I need to create a PHP script to manage these virtual machines (I know about phpVirtualBox, but it's not what I need). If I try to run the virtual machines using shell_exec() from php, I get no answer at all (And I have tested that shell_exec is working on my server).

I want the users of the other machines, which have accounts in my server, to mount their home directories in the server. I managed to do everything, except that for the moment I can only mount their home directories by being the superuser of the server, a privilege that I don't want to give to the users. Also, I don't want their home directories to be mounted automatically. Thus, from a "normal" filesystem share, I want to: 1-The home directories of user in other machines be mountable in the user areas of the server (I can do that already).
2-I want that the users be able to mount by hand their directories, so that the directories are not permanently mounted. Currently, I can only mount and umount being the superuser of the server. I don't want to give superuser privileges to all server users.
3-I don't want their directories to be mounted on startup (otherwise I could simply add the mounts to /etc/fstab). Thus, does anyone knows how can I give the users the privilege only to mount a specific filesystem?

I just set up my own server and basically my folder is on say /media/disk1/ and my girlfriends is on /media/patato/ is there a way i can set it so that if i log in it goes to my folder and if she does it goes to hers.... I've currently got it set up as /media/ that it goes to but i cant get it to change it for each user (we can also browse each others drive and we dont want that, we want to be tied into /media/ourdirectory and all of its subdirectories) problem is that it is running on a computer that use to be functional (same install because I cant find my disk drive) so it cant use home folders....

I can login as that user, but that user has "...Is not in the SudoersFile." How do I setup this user to be in the sudoers file, without having any ability to make changes to the system?

I used the following web pages to assist me... [URL]
Below is my main.cf
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version
# Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first

I manage a few Linux servers and I need a fast way to connect to these servers instead of having to enter the root password every time.
Is there anyway to save the passwords/keys and connect to the servers by simply typing: SSH user@ip
Or even something easier without typing the server IP like I had Putty in Windows. I know I can still use Putty but I want to use a better SSH client, like GNOME Terminal.

When I add a new user and SSH to my server as that new user, my command prompt is just a '$'. Tab completion doesn't work either. What I notice is that I get this:
Could not chdir to home directory /home/scaldwell: No such file or directory
$
Echo PS1 yields nothing. There is also nothing in /etc/skel. I didn't have to do anything special to get my initial user setup with the right prompt, and the second user has been added to the admin group as well. I have noticed that if I issue the command sudo chsh -s /bin/bash the account gets the correct prompt.
