Security :: Invalid (Untrusted) Certificate - TWC Webmail

Oct 7, 2010

At the login webpage of <[URL]>, the Time Warner Cable (TWC) Webmail site, I am immediately confronted with a warning that the Security Certificate is invalid & that the site is untrusted. This occurs with Firefox, Seamonkey, & Konqueror. This does not occur on Microsoft or Apple systems; I have checked other colleagues machines. I have manually overridden the warning & everything functions fine. I have contacted TWC & am awaiting their tests. But, I would like some independent corroboration from other users in the Linux community. Could some of you perform the test yourself on this URL? An error will be readily apparent.

Fedora :: Invalid Security Certificate?

Jun 15, 2010

Got F13 installed yesterday, this afternoon I suddenly started getting Secure Connection Failed warnings. I'm not sure whose problem it is because it mentions uses an invalid security certificate.This certificate is only valid for *.opendns.com(Error Code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)It continues to say that someone could be impersonating the actual server. I am still receiving mail through google and my google calendars seem to be working. I do use OpenDNS for my DNS instead of my ISPs (Comcast which would very often slow down) and obviously I use IMAP mail with google on Thunderbird. So is it google, or OpenDNS, or Thunderbird that has a problem. Firefox does not seem to have a problem

I get an Untrusted Connection error when I visit this site to login into my GRE account, and I cannot add it as an exception, in Mozilla Firefox 4.0 on Ubuntu 11.04. When I visit the site using Chrome, I have no issues. Is this a bug in Firefox's certificate management? I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I do not get this error in Windows' Firefox 4.0.

Fedora :: YUM Freezes With Error - Peer Certificate Invalid

Sep 17, 2010

My organization just moved to using a zscaler proxy system. Basically, I have to use a .pac file in Firefox to get onto the proxy, which directs me to a series of two Flash pages, one to input my username, one for the password. After reading through the .pac file, I was able to get some command-line things to work by specifying the proxy given at the end. However, this server uses an SSL certificate that is not emitted by an authority, but rather directly by our organization. In Firefox, I had to import this certificate to enable https:// browsing.

Is there any way to "import" this certificate so that yum can use it? Because yum freezes with the error:
Code:
Could not get metalink [URL] error was
14: Peer cert cannot be verified or peer cert invalid

Networking :: Cannot Connect To Internet At AirPort - Invalid Certificate

Aug 27, 2010

I'm at the AirPort. I can't connect with Linux but can connect with Windozzze. In Linux I get: You have received an invalid certificate. Please contact the server administrator or email correspondent and give them the following information: Your certificate contains the same serial number as another certificate issued by the certificate authority. Please get a new certificate containing a unique serial number (Error code: sec_error_reused_issuer_and_serial). The page you are trying to view can not be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

The airport requires that one look at a login message and agree to its terms before making any other connection: that's what I can't get and can't get further. Up-to-date Slackware, latest kernel (self-built), Atheros wireless chipset, eMachines e725-4250 laptop. I've connected here before, always in Linux.nl. Who's objecting? This is in Firefox the only browser with Javascript I have. What certificate are they talking about? I just downloaded Opera: it works. It detects the defective certificate and asks if I want to proceed. How do I get Firefox to do that? Should I move this message to a different forum?

Security :: Secure Webmail - SMTP Relay In DMZ?

Apr 11, 2010

When you set up a webmail solution these days, either on your home LAN or at a small business. What steps do you take to make the solution as secure as possible? A couple of years ago it was sufficient to port forward both port 25 and 80/443 to you server located on the internal LAN. Today you're more likely to have a SMTP relay in a DMZ of some kind. But the webmail, how do you solve this? Do you place a dedicated webmail frontend in the DMZ and open ports towards the internal LAN, or do you just place the entire server in the DMZ? I'm looking for input for a small network/home LAN so it shouldn't be to complex.

Ubuntu Security :: How To Protect From Untrusted Files

Oct 8, 2010

I want to start using videos/music files downloaded from untrusted sources (BT,Sharing Forums, etc.). Haven't made this a habit b4 because of the security risks. I want to take steps to reduce the risk & protect my computer from anything malicious. What are some good choices for this? The biggest step I took so far is using Ubuntu since it's very virus resistant, but other threats do exist out there (rootkits, malicious scripts, etc.). When downloading files from untrusted sources, who knows what may be hidden inside.Some options I'm thinking about:

1) Using a VM (with Ubuntu installed inside) & playing the files inside the VM. If anything malicious happen, it would be trapped inside & I could easily revert to a clean snapshot.

2) Using AppArmor to restrict what the files or program used to play the files can/can't do. AA seems very complicated though.

Are the above overkill? Would it be sufficient enough to just open these files on a non-admin user account since no access to root or sudo?

Security :: Check Mail Via Tor And Browser Says Connection Untrusted?

May 20, 2011

I was recently connecting securely to the website where I have my mail account, and I connected through Tor. When doing so firefox presents me with the screen saying that the connection is untrusted and it can't verify the certificate. So I cancelled. I'm using torbutton and I turned torbutton to off and connected again with no problem. Then with torbutton on again, same thing (untrusted).

Is it possible the exit node I was going through is doing a man in the middle attack? However later when connecting through tor I did NOT get the warning about the site being untrusted. I really don't know what exit node I was using when I got the certificate warning and what exit node I was using when I did not recieve the warning. I don't know how long I stay on the same node or how/when it changes.

Fedora Security :: Securing A Server For Deployment In Untrusted Zone?

Apr 1, 2010

I have to deploy a server to some customers that should not be given access to the server itself. I know that nothing is 100% secure but I've searched without finding a decent answer (maybe I googled for the wrong terms ?)I need some advice about encrypted filesystem. * The server must boot without asking for a passphrase (the server will be in a restricted access area so typing a password could take a while). I can't store the password for luks in an unencrypted file so it seems a loop to me. The only way out I can see is to store the passphrase in the boot binaries (better than nothing...) but this results in more work for me.* possibly the customer should not be able to move the hard disks to another pc, i.e. reading the passphrase from some unique hardware ID. This is risky but I could add a master passphrase to be used in case of hardware replacement

Ubuntu Security :: Generic AppArmor Profile For Untrusted Application

Sep 3, 2010

I've read and re-read everything I can find about AppArmor, to no avail. On the whole, AppArmor isn't for me. However, rather than give up on it completely, I have an idea: create a profile that I could use as a template for any untrusted application, with the aim of 1) blocking it from network access and 2) blocking it from installing other applications. I've got as far as creating an empty profile:

Code:
# Generic AppArmor Profile for UntrustedApplication
#include <tunables/global>
/usr/sbin/UntrustedApplication {
#include <abstractions/base> }
What do I need to add to make this profile 100% permissive, except for the two exceptions stated above?

Ubuntu :: Firefox 3.6.12 On 10.10 Ssl Security Certificate Error (Comodo Certs)?

Dec 6, 2010

Firefox 3.6.12 on Ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop computer is reporting a "this connection is untrusted" error for sites that have security certificates provided by COMODO. Yet, the same sites work fine in Firefox 3.6.x on Windows XP, or Chromium in Ubuntu. Here is the more specific message: "The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.

(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)" The issuer is listed as "COMODO High Assurance Secure Server CA." Here are some examples that throw this error for me:[URL]... It appears that there was some controversy with COMODO and Mozilla (due to bad behavior by COMODO) in the past, but all I can find on that indicates that this should be not an issue any longer.
